The Best Tax Software Period!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have used H and R Block Software for years now. I have never had any issues. The software constantly updates to make sure you have the latest forms available. This software is extremely user friendly. It holds your hand from start to finish. Should you have issues or questions they have help links on every input question. Should you need further assistance they have Forums that have probably already answered your question. If you are still having issues you can reach out to a live person for guidance. Since I previously have used this software, I imported all personal information from the previous tax year, which saves time. I had to manually input my W2 but you can choose to automatically import it if your work uses a approved W2 provider. The program will allow you to skip sections and continue and you can later return to finish or Edit the section. When all of your amounts have been input and deductions taken, It lets you know if you should take the standard deduction or itemized deduction. Since I am a number s guy, I like the fact it shows your standard deduction amount and the itemized amount you have. When finished with Federal Tax you will be asked to Download your state. This only takes a few seconds. The program then forwards your previous inputs to the state form. When completed both state and federal, the software runs a check to see if you left out anything, or to see if you may have additional deductions to take. You will be asked how to submit taxes. You have multiple ways, I always Efile my Fed and print off my state because I’m cheap, My state has a free Efile on the website. So, I take my printed state and hand input the amounts. The Forms I print are mirrored to the T on the website, so it only takes a few minutes to do. One final note, many people are getting in to investing in Crypto Currency. The Deluxe version asks if you are one of these people. It will then help you input your info to claim this. Should you have tons of other investments I would look to getting and upgraded H and R Block tax software to better suit your needs. If you are worried about being Audited, have no fear. H and R Block offers free audit support should this ever happen. I love the software and have been and will be a long-time customer. It is by far the best and most economical piece of tax software out there. I would recommend to friends and family.

Great, easy to use!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I used the H&R Block tax program to complete my federal and state (NY) tax returns. I found the program easy to install and use. The program asks questions and then determines whether that information should be used in the return. For example there are questions and calculations for deductions and charitable contributions. The program inputs the data from the federal return into the state return. If you have self-employment income the program calculates depreciation and makes suggestions regarding possible deductions. The program also has tools to calculate items such as home office deductions. If you used this program for the prior year's return it automatically inputs information such as carryover depreciation. In terms of investments it automatically downloads tax information from providers such as Vanguard, Fidelity, etc, which saves a lot of time if you own many funds with capital gains and dividends. Submitting the returns electronically to the IRS and state office of taxation was also easy, requiring entry of ID information such as a driver's license and bank information for payment/refund purposes. The program will email you when the return is accepted by the IRS and the state (if applicable). The returns can also be saved as .pdf files for your records. All in all I would definitely use this program again next year because of its ease of use.

Try free site first on HR Block
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The only benefit was having your returns saved to your computer. I found out going to H and R Blocks site you can file your return for free including the state return in which you have to pay to file with the program when you buy it. Better program on site for free.

Solid product and it makes you feel really safe!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been using the online H&R Block for the past several years and really enjoyed the ease of that product. Since that was such an easy product and they had all of my history, I was hesitant to move to using the actual software but this past year we made some big changes and it was time for a more robust product. As imagined H&R Block made it super simple to transition to the software and not just because I've used their products in the past, all I had to do was drag in a PDF of my last return and they handled the rest. Also, I was a big fan of being able to take a picture of documents and have them immediately updated rather than taking a picture and emailing it, and downloading it, and uploading it... all of that fun is taken away and I'm 100% on board with it!!! I really appreciated their automated reviews of the information too, as that makes me feel really secure about what I am sending to the gov't. I'm really happy and will continue using this for many more tax seasons!

Solid Tax Software Option
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Last year I switched from being a lifetime TurboTax user to H&R Block software. There was a small learning curve that first time since I was so used to using TT. There wasn’t anything too difficult to adjust to, however this year it was super easy. I think H&R has my business for the foreseeable future. Importing my data from my old PDF into H&R Block’s software was incredibly easy. I have the deluxe version and it was easily able to handle my needs. I was an Independent Contractor and had a variety of other types of 1099s to deal with. The questions about the 2 Covid related stimulus payments were clear and easy. The software is solid but there are a couple reasons I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. The interface isn’t great. There is some unnecessary clicking in my opinion, having to go thru several pages to get where you know you want to be at times. I also feel like there should be some live updates like when I’m playing around with different numbers to contribute to my 401k. Instead it takes several clicks to update that amount and see your updated tax bill. But really pretty minor grievances. All in all this is very easy to use with a decent help system. When you combine that with the price (lower than much of the competition) I feel like this is a pretty solid choice. I would definitely recommend this to a friend.

HUGE Improvement Over Previous Years
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. To start with, I will be mentioning a competitor’s program, but NOT to compare them. Mentioning this other program is ONLY due to the fact that I’ve been using that program for the past several years. Moving on….. I’ll admit, like a great many people, I’ve been one to stick with TurboTax. Why? Because it’s always been one of, if not ‘the’, easiest to use. Several years ago, due to the considerable cost difference between TurboTax, and H&R Block TaxCut (as it was then called), I opted to make the switch…and, to be completely honest, I was sorry I did. TaxCut was not even close to being “easy to use” – it was confusing, convoluted, complicated, and (now that the 3 Cs are out of the way) a very poor excuse for tax preparation software. With that (very old) version, going back multiple steps was all but impossible. You, essentially, had to open a file, start from the beginning, and click through multiple steps until you reached the first step you needed to add additional information for. Granted, all your previously-entered info was still there…but, you had to click through steps, one-by-one, until you reached where you needed to be. Then, to add further additional information, you had to click forward (again) through multiple steps until you reached the next area where you needed to add info. If you realized you had accidentally forgotten something for an earlier step, once again, you had to start from the beginning. Talk about (very) poorly designed software. Of course, H&R Block was, first and foremost, a tax & financial company, not a software company, so some might understand. After that fiasco, I returned to using TurboTax, and have continued using it ever since…until now. For our 2020 taxes, I decided to give H&R Block’s software…now called ‘H&R Block Tax Software’…another shot. While I haven’t yet completed our taxes (due to missing some forms), I have gone through a lot of it, and I’ve noticed quite a few improvements. For one thing…probably the most important thing…it’s a LOT easier to use. The “3 Cs” have been removed. For another thing, entering additional information from earlier steps no longer requires starting from the beginning…as with other tax preparation software, you can go backwards as easily/freely as you do forwards. The overall design of the software is no longer “clunky”, and is, in fact, very streamlined. As the title says, a HUGE improvement. Of course, all these improvements have led to a higher purchasing cost (it’s no longer the “cheapest”), but it’s still less expensive than most others. Cost aside, I would now consider H&R Block Tax Software as one of the “front-runners” in the consumer tax preparation software market. Is it better than the others? I cannot say, as I don’t have the others to do a side-by-side comparison. However, I can say that it is at least as good as the other top programs…and, at a price that’s lower than almost all of them. What about those who used TurboTax last year…can they import that file into H&R Block’s software? The answer is “yes”. I can’t say the same for most other tax perperation programs…but, in regards to these two, due to the file format each uses, BOTH are capable of importing the others data. This makes it extremely easy for those switching from TT to H&R Block…and, you’ll save money while doing it. So, would I recommend H&R Block Tax Software? The simple answer is “yes”. It offers the same functionality & features as the other tax preparation programs currently available, it has the ability to import tax data from other programs, and it costs less than (most) other tax preparation programs. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to get back to adding additional info, as I received the last W2…and, thankfully, it will be extremely easy to go back to that section. Disclaimer: This product was provided free, or at reduced cost, for the purpose of reviewing the product. Nevertheless, the above review, be it positive, negative, or anywhere in-between, is a 100% honest review, and the price paid played absolutely no part in my review.

Don’t download
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Would not purchase this as a download. A feature of the product is free download of your federal taxes. However when I went to use the download it would not work with the code. Contacted Best Buy they told me to contact the customer service department for the product. Attempted and could get no where with their customer service either. Would not recommend due to the fact the download may work but if the product had additional features and you have a problem you get the run around.

Do Not Purchase if you need to file 8915-E
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This software is not user-friendly at all. There are so many questions that maybe professional tax prepares can answer, for me, there are just way too complicated. I spent 5 hours answering all the questions, and ended up with the message telling me I couldn't e-file because CARE Act repayment form 8915-E is not included in the package. Waste of time and money for sure.

It's like a tax service dog
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've used H&R Block Tax (or Taxcut) since at least 2010 and have had good luck with it. Most years our return is fairly simple, but several times I've had employer stock transactions and even some self-employment income and the software has worked well. Once you start using it every year, it's also really convenient to import all your basic info from the previous year's return which saves a lot of typing. Another nice feature that looks like it was added this year is the capability to import your W-2 information by uploading a PDF or picture of the form from your phone. It worked perfectly on a couple of W-2s, but on one it missed the state information for some reason. At any rate, it's a big time saver but you'll definitely want to double check all the entries and values to make sure it's correct (the program does remind you to do that). Unfortunately, the 1099s still had to be entered manually but I think they're not as standard of a form layout so that's probably understandable. I think the software is pretty intuitive to use, and it lets you view or print the actual tax forms if you need them or just want to double check everything. The running total of federal and state refund (or lack thereof) is a nice feature while you're entering your information. Speaking of refunds, this software also includes a promotion to give you a 3.5% bonus (it used to be 5%) if you choose to get your refund as a gift card to a certain well-known online retailer. So, for example, if you get a $1,000 refund that way, the bonus will cover the cost of the H&R Block Tax software. I believe there are some privacy trade-offs with going that route, but depending on your level of comfort after reading the fine print that's an option worth considering. It's really too bad that taxes are so complicated. I can't imagine trying to sit down and do them myself based on reading the instructions. For the small price of this software, though, I get a great tool to guide me through the labyrinth. This way I can continue to do my own taxes without paying a lot more and having to take everything to some professional who probably has a 50/50 chance of making a mistake on it anyway.

Should take care of normal tax prep
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I haven’t received my tax information yet, so doing a full review of the software isn’t feasible. But I can say that installing the software was a breeze. I had no issues with it. I received the download link and instructions. I downloaded the software, installed it, and then click state, where the software stated I was entitled to one state download and which state would I like. I chose my state and it downloaded it and installed it into the same software app. It also gave me the option to pay for an additional state should I need to do so. After the software was installed, a box popped up and stated many new laws were enacted or coming up and that updates would need to be installed. I opened the app today to do this review and the state app said there was an update and would I like to wait or install it now. I installed it and it took less than a minute and I’m good. I like the software. The GUI is clean and not all cluttered. The 5 tabs at the top after you create a return are easy to read. There’s a welcome tab, federal tab, state tab, file tab, and a plan tab. The plan tab has 2 options for after you do your 2020 return. It offers help with estimating 2021 withholding and tax planning and retirement planning. Off to the left side of the 5 tabs, there’s a nice visible spot showing your Deluxe copy of H&R Block with the Federal and State refund due or owed. Under that is a help center button and then an FAQ with 5 questions posted. Lastly above the 5 tabs, you have 7 action buttons. They are Take me to, Forms, New/Open, Save, Print, E-File Status and Help Center. For the last few years, I’ve gotten assistance for my tax preparation as a consumer with my state’s department of rehab (FYI injury…not recovery, not that either is bad or good) so I’ll use them again if it’s available. Due to Covid-19, I chose to have a copy of H&R Block’s app just in case. I used their service for about 4-5 years, and they treated me very well. If you need tax preparation software, I’d say this Deluxe copy of H&R Block should take care of anyone with normal tax issues.

H&R Block Tax Software, An Annual Tradition
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I don't know how many years I've used H&R Block Tax Software for my filings, but it probably goes back a decade. I have yet to be audited (knock on wood) and manage to navigate the very confusing waters of tax returns without any problems. This year's software looks exactly like prior years, and that's not a bad thing. After installation, the software allows you to grab the previous year's file (even from other software developers) and pre-populates much of the personal information. It saves a ton of time, and allows for entry of just the financial numbers. I was pleased that the software instructed me how to deduct some additional items this year, such as working from home full time and some major home renovation purchases. It also asked if my daughter, a recent adult and no longer a dependent, if she had received any stimulus checks over the last year. She hadn't, so the software provided her with the additional refund to compensate for it. Very cool! I really like the deduction pro aspect of the software, which allows you to input all the items given to charity over the last year while giving you a nice estimate of what that value would be. Filing is as easy as it ever has been. Driver's licenses are needed, AGI from 2019 is automatically retrieved from the prior year's filing, and the IRS receives your tax return electronically, as submitted by HR Block on your behalf. You can check in using the software and it lets you know if your return was accepted and if there are any more steps. For once, I didn't have to pay extra at the end of the year, so I was able to enter my bank account info in and it says I should get my refund within 21 days. I'm sure that making a payment is just as simple. All in all, I have no complaints, and the software worked exactly as intended.

Fairly easy and intuitive
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This software is quite easy to install and start using. The program "interview" walks you step by step through each section of the tax preparation process. The program includes 1 state return but does not include the e-file fee for the return. That's an extra $19.95. :( My only complaint is that there is not a way to increase the font size in the program. It did not automatically incorporate last years tax information which is also unfortunate. (I used the HR Block program last year too)

Excellent Tax Software
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my second time using the H&R Block software and I continue to be impressed at how thorough it is. I don’t have an overly complicated return but with several W-2’s between my wife and I, numerous 1099-DIV and INT documents along with a 1099-B, the application does a great job at helping me organize and enter everything. With our W-2’s, I especially like the import feature that it uses. When you type in some of the employer information, it will go out and find the forms needed for the return and import the data leaving me only needing to review the documents for accuracy. I have yet to find any discrepancies. As far as looking for deductions, it walks you through absolutely everything and makes suggestions along the way on what you may have overlooked. Items such as home office use are common but it goes into some of the minute details I would not have thought of. Another important item is how it transfers all of the information from your federal forms to your state return. I finished up my state taxes in about 10 minutes as most of it was a review except for some state college savings plan information I needed to add. E-Filing is a breeze and took only a couple of minutes but only after the software does one final check on all of the information to make sure your aren’t missing any details and that generally it isn’t finding any glaring issues that could cause the return to be immediately flagged for an audit. I went from using someone every year to doing it myself. I am happy that I chose this software and plan on using it next year again. I am fairly certain others would have the same experience.

Good value tax return software!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have used both Turbo Tax and H&R Block. I like both softwares and each has their own differences. The H&R Block software is very highly regarded and reviewed. Here are my thoughts on it! This Deluxe package focuses on W-2 income, interest/dividend income, and form 1040. All in all, I think this will help the vast majority of people. This software is nice that it asks basically all of the questions that you would get asked at a CPA's office. You answer the questions, and the software does the work for you. What I really enjoyed was the tracking of your tax/refund in real time. If you have a question or do not know what things mean, there are links that provide great explanations/descriptions without all of the technical jargon. The questions help determine what deductions you qualify for and what you do not. At the end, the software reviews the information you provided and checks to see if there are any problems. When you move on to the state taxes, it transfers everything over and you just have to answer state specific taxes. While you do get 5 free federal e-files, you only get 1 state and you have to pay to e-file it. If your state offers free state tax filing (mine does not), then you could just use the state program, print it out, or transfer the information over. The only reason I took off a star is that my wife qualifies for a specific deduction that she gets when she uses another tax software, but for some reason, H&R is not able to get that deduction so the amount we owe is slightly higher. All in all, great software for the vast majority of people. There are sales going on all the time so this is a great alternative and value to paying a CPA.

Taxes made easy, refund maximized!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.H&R Block makes filing your taxes easy. In my case, I don't have a ton of deductions but do have a Health Savings Account which makes it easy to work with. As with prior years, a simple import makes getting the process started a snap. I was able to go through the initial questions and import W2's in a matter of minutes. This year the software added the ability to scan/take a picture of the W2 to make inputting the information easier if you couldn't do the import. For the stimulus when I first when through the questions I got it wrong and it identified the error. Since then, I noticed there've been updates. Like with prior years, H&R Block, does a wonderful job staying up to date with updates and changes to make. This year I noticed it also asked about Crypto and other investments. Had I had those, I feel confident that the software would have made it easy to itemize those things and file them properly with the confidence of being backed by H&R Block. I've used the software for many years and have never had any issues. I did one year try TaxCut and regretted that as how the software imports wasn't compatible with everything that HR Block is. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this software, especially if you're tax situation is evolving to be more complicated over the years like many others have had happen to them.
