You have to pay extra to file state
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a scam software. Cost an extra $21 to e-file my state taxes. Go find software that doesn’t charge you again to do something that you already paid for.

Another year, another excellent experience
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I received this product in exchange for my fair and unbiased opinion. I’m also going to keep this short and sweet - H&R Block’s Tax Software Deluxe makes it easy to prep and file your taxes. W-2, 1099s, and all your other forms are simple to enter, and it’ll find other deductions for you that you may not have thought about. It’ll also help you amend your taxes from previous years should it find anything in previous years that you owe or should get back. And it’s cheaper than dropping your documents off at the office. Just remember that with the state edition that you will still need to pay the state e-file fee.

Makes filing my returns safe and easy.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am able to download and install both the federal and state versions effortlessly. It knows I did last years taxes which speed up entering all the same information such as name , address, etc. The question and answer format works best for me, but one could fill in the forms manually if you know what you need to enter. I haven't sent my retiurn in yet in cae there are any last minute updates to the software. Its backed by H&R Blocks guarantee and expertise..

Best tax software period
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been using H&R Block Tax Software for a number of years now. I switched from another brand and could not have been happier. It has the perfect mix of ease of use and advanced features. My returns are fairly simple and rarely do I have to deviate from the return wizard into the advanced forms. There is ample help provided online as well as phone support if you are really stuck or confused. Great product!

Good if you file later not earlier
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The initial download and install was fine, as was the activation. It had the ability, as most do, to import my previous tax year's PDF file that was created with another software company, and that also proceeded without issues. The questions were pretty straightforward. Some previous programs I use have had issues in the past, especially since I have full custody and major placement of my child. With some software products, that is a bit of a pain, since he's always here so I get head of household, but we alternate who claims him as a dependent every other year. This is the first tax software that seemed to GET this concept and had quick click easy "this is my situation" options that actually fit. This is where I got the first nag to upgrade to premium. Annoying, since had I wanted premium I would've purchased that, not the deluxe version. I really don't like companies trying to upsell me while USING their software. I closed the program after some initial work, having specified my financial taxes folder to save it to (not the default). So I was disappointed the next time I opened the program that it didn't REMEMBER the location that I had JUST SAVED IT TO. I had to browse. Fortunately subsequent openings and closings let it show the file history as you'd expect, so no browsing to reopen it again. I don't know why it couldn't remember that first time though. For the W2 entry, they offered a "Take a pic with your phone" option. I tried that, they claim no app needed. Looks to have worked although at this point there was only blank information for the state information. So I don't know if it actually captured any of the state information or not. Hopefully when I get to the state part they have that information, since I have the version that includes the state form. I have to say that this seems to be the best tax program I've used so far. I've spent years using taxslayer, and last year I tried Turbotax. But none of them worked as easily for me. I do testing for Amazon, and I get a 1099 NEC form from them. Other tax software usually tries to force it to be a business type of income and makes it difficult to get it added as simple hobby income, so I'm not paying business taxes on it as well. This program seemed to understand that and it was one of the quick options, hobby income. Outstanding. The program flagged a few things on my federal form that were just information that somehow wasn't added or entered in the course of the questionnaire. Finished federal, showed no issues and no real risk of audit since it's pretty straightforward. Then downloaded the state program, that also went easily. But after finishing, it claimed I owed about $5000 to state. Clearly something was messed up since I didn't change THAT much for income this year, and last year I only owed the state about $150. I tried Tax Slayer and got a totally different number, and that's when I remembered that when I first did it, the state information didn't seem to be used at all by that "take a photo" option to import the W2. Sure enough, when I went to manually edit the W2, none of the state information was there. Once I filled that in, the numbers got back to where they should be. They need to fix the way it only does part of the W2 with the photo capture. But even with that, everything else here went very well. This is the best question driven data entry I've had for taxes ever, and I've been doing my own taxes with software or online for decades. The way it handled hobby income really impressed me since no other software was that quick and easy. I always had to get in and override it, and sometimes it took me 30 to 60 minutes of trying various things just to get it the way it SHOULD be. Plus the fact that the H&R product understood being head of household with a child that may not be a dependent for tax credit purposes also made it a better option than the rest. Of course, when I tried to efile, the federal was fine, but it said that H&R block wasn't ready to efile for my state (Wisconsin) yet, so I had to try back in a few days. I waited the days it specified (on or before 29 Jan it said). Then even on the day it was supposed to be updated, it still showed not updated and I couldn't efile. I got on their website, found the State Forms page, selected Wisconsin, and here it showed it all "up to date" yet the software said it wasn't. So they have some miscommunication going on between various sections of their own company. I'm not waiting a week to file, so I ended up having to use another product to do my taxes. So I guess despite this seeming to be easier, it just wasn't actually ABLE to file anything. What good is an easy to use program when they can't get things together and allow the end user to file? I'll stick with my other options next year now.

Worked well enough with some odd quirks
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I don't think I'm alone when I say that I hate doing my taxes. It's stressful, confusing, time-consuming, and full of hidden fees. I picked up this H&R Block software in the hopes that it would make doing my taxes easier. Ultimately, my taxes got done, but it wasn't the smooth experience that I'd hoped for. First off, the software does not seamlessly sync with H&R Block's online tax service. I did my taxes through H&R Block's website last year, and I'd hoped it would just transfer all of my data over from their site. It didn't. I had to download last year's taxes as a PDF and then import them into the software. That leads me to my next problem. My taxes included a combination of digital forms and scanned documents. The scanned documents all imported surprisingly well (it recognized the numbers correctly and input them appropriately), but the purely digital forms imported with errors. At one point, I was dancing for joy because the software was telling me that I was getting thousands back. When I double checked the figures though, I saw that it had misinterpreted a period on one of the digital forms as a comma (making it seem that I'd spent a hundred thousand more in property taxes). The software also consistently clicked a checkbox saying that I had charitable donations to declare (I didn't). When we got to the point of submitting my taxes to the IRS, I was unpleasantly surprised to get charged a submission fee for my state taxes (despite this product saying that it includes state). I was also charged a (not insignificant) transaction fee for taking the submission fee out of my return. So much for avoiding hidden fees. Ultimately, my taxes got done. And despite the issues, I'm fairly confident that my taxes are correct. I take comfort in the fact that H&R Block is standing by my tax return. That being said, I can't really recommend this product. The glitches were too numerous, and the surprise fees were a little too galling.

Extremely technical, and hides fees
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The first thing I can say is that I'm not a fan. The tax software says it includes state. It specifically says that. However, when trying to submit my taxes electronically, it said that Federal taxes were included in this while State taxes needed an additional $19.95 to process. This feels dirty, to be honest - it feels like an additional fee was stuck in there for something that I'd have logically expected to be included in the purchase price. Additionally, it's not very helpful. It's confusing. I had to keep bouncing between editing the tax forms directly and using the data entry fields to set up my tax forms accurately. It didn't do a good job at walking me through some unusual forms I had either, so I almost ended up claiming a business when I didn't have one based on the instructions. As someone who isn't skilled with the tax code, I can't really recommend this for users like myself. The web interface and the tax office both are easier to use.

So cumbersome, I gave up
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Creating an account and signing in was a simple and straightforward process. There was an issue with the software when attempting to pull in our W-2 information: it didn’t. One of them was from the State of Oregon, and the other from a large hospital. It was very puzzling why it wasn’t able to acquire the information from two large entities. Entering all of the information was cumbersome and laborious compared to software we’ve used in the past. We had a 1099 as well, but it did not give us the option to enter the data. We tried to use the in-program help, but it was no clearer which 1040 tax form we needed to use to ensure that the 1099 information was included. After all of the difficulties, we decided to discontinue and file our taxes with a competitor.
