Customers are saying

Customers are enthusiastic about the HD Radio Portable Player's sound quality, ease of use, and the ability to receive HD radio broadcasts. Many appreciate its compact size, good battery life, and the clear display. While some users wish for an AM radio band and a longer warranty, the positive feedback on sound quality and reception outweighs these concerns. The price point is also frequently cited as a positive aspect of the product.

Mine is used mostly around the house. Unbelievable how it can pick up distant stations. Havent used on the go. This is a great way to check out HD Radio. My experience with this HD unit is far better than I expected. Sorry that a few had problemswith their radio. Mine is great, I love HD radio and have been using mine every day.

    Updated version is great!

The updated version of this radio is great! The reception is much improved, seeking for HD stations is super fast, and when you are on an analog-only station or out of range of the HD signal, the analog signal sounds great, too. Make sure you get the NS-HD01A, not the older NS-HD01. To be really sure you have the latest version, power it up in the store, select Menu -> Version and make sure it says "Si4680" under "DSP Version." That's the new receiver chip that is the heart of the radio and gives it the great performance.

    Portable HD Radio

This portable HD radio is easy to figure out how to use and to take around with you anywhere. The reception is good, and I can tune in to most HD stations in my area, with the drawback of a lack of many good stations in the SF Bay area.

Can't Beat This For HD Radio

Wasn't expecting too much for the low price. I was truly surprised to find my favorite HD radio station (available in HD only) came in loud and clear (golden oldies). I have 7 stations preset. Smooth Jazz is also HD only. I guess you have to be in an urban area to get my kind of reception, but for me, this is great. I connect it to my Bose radio and get the oldies for guests.

Reception at home is very good with strong signals on all but a few local HD stations. However can receive only a few signals at work. The armband carrying case is not convient.

    COOL GADGET

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I ALREADY OWN AN INSIGNIA STAND ALONE TUNER CONNECTED TO MY OLD ONKYO RECEIVER VIA OPTICAL. GREAT SOUND.I ALWAYS LIKED FM RADIO DUE TO THE " SURPRISE FACTOR" DJ'S USE TO PLAY MUSIC. WITH AN I-POD OR MP3 YOU ALWAYS KNOW THE MUSIC AVAILABLE;NOT SO WITH RADIO. THIS LITTLE GADGET EVEN IF DOES NOT HAVE DIGITAL AM( THERE'S NO TOO MANY DIGITAL AM STATIONS ON THE AIR); HAS A GREAT SOUND. THE PROVIDED HEADPHONES ARE ONLY OK TO PRODUCE A GOOD SOUND. HOWEVER; TRY TO USE A BETTER ONES FROM A WELL KNOWN BRAND AND YOU WILL NOTICE THE IMPROVEMENT.THE FACT ONLY HAS 10 PRE-SETS IS A DRAWBACK.THERE IS STILL NON-DIGITAL FM STATIONS ON THE AIR AND YOU WILL HAVE TO MAKE A CHOICE AND USE THOSE FEW PRE-SETS WISELY. HD FM IS A GREAT IMPROVEMENT OVER ANALOG FM. THE SOUND IS SHARPER WITH GREAT STEREO SEPARATION AN A TOTAL ABSCENCE OF NOISE. ALL HD FM RADIOS " BLEND" THE SIGNAL TO REGULAR ANALOG FM IF THE SIGNAL IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO TRIGGER THE DIGITAL FM CIRCUIT. THERE IS WHEN YOU WILL NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE!!!. HAVING EVEN THREE FEEDS USING THE SAME FREQUENCY IS GREAT. FOR SOME REASON HD2 ALWAYS SOUND BETTER THAN HD1 AND HD3 IS USED MAINLY FOR TALK RADIO AND SOME AM STATIONS. I RECENTLY READ HD FM WAS ALMOST DEAD... REALLY ??????

    Worked Great For A Year

The HD radio worked great for a year. Then I picked it up one day and could not get any volume. Everything else works but it doesn't matter if you can't hear the radio! I have heard about someone else having a problem with their HD radio. They had to throw it away since the warranty is only for 90 days. Very disappointing. I will probably have to do the same with mine. I once had an Insignia TV that crapped out within the warranty period (actually within about 7 days). I was able to get a full refund from Best Buy. I will never buy another Insignia product.

    Units do not last

    Posted .

Problems 1. Two units failed. First unit lost volume control. Second unit, randomly losses station, volume spikes! and stays loud, will not shut off, initial good reception has recently failed - in short poorly constructed. 2. problems with design a) charging off a USB port! When past radios died I switched out rechargable AA batteries and unit is ready. NOW I have a radio that requires a running computer, it never charges if the computer is shut off. This Design is is garbage 3. No AM station 4. Carrier makes difficult to get unit out, and operate with unit in carrier. 5. I wish I would have written my issues down. I would have more. My only regret is the Zune is my only alternative, and I do not know if $170 is necessary for my needs.

Works in car-AM broadcasts on FM channels

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Right now, I'm listening at home to an hd subchannel on my Sony noise-canceling earphones, and the sound is great. As far as I can tell, I am receiving every subchannel broadcasting in my area. This includes several AM stations that have secondary signals on sister FM stations, including two all news stations and a popular talk station. I drove sixty miles and back today, and got signal most of the way, except in an area near some mountains. Yes, it cut out occasionally, but the AM stations on the FM signal sound much better than over AM on my car radio. (I'm using my aux. input on my car stereo.) Even when I can't get HD signal on FM, the analog comes in very nicely. It is the best small analog FM receiver I've owned. No, it isn't perfect. You won't get perfect HD on a small portable unit. Once you accept that, you'll be happy with it. The graphic display works fine, even though it isn't elegant. I think it is an excellent value.

    HD Radio Needs Power Boost

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Sound quality is great with my own headphones. FM reception is flawless. HD reception is very poor on most stations. Same as in my new car which has HD radio. Radio stations will have to boost the power if this is going to work. I don't believe that it is the fault of the radio, but rather the transmitter. HD Radio is not ready for prime time. The radio stations need to boost the signal.

The audio quality of the Insignia was amazing up to June 28. Then there was no audio. I tried re-setting to the factory setting. I tried a different set of ear-buds. No change. The receiver turns on, but no audio. To make matters worse, it is about a week and a half out of warranty

    worthwhile purchase

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this hd radio to access the local npr affiliate classical music channel. It works well at home, but is not useful in the car, as it very frequently has to search to recapture the hd signal. Also, the battery begins to lose charge after 3-4 hours of use. I bought an accessory charging kit which allows you to use the radio while it is charging. Of the two chargers in the kit, the 110 ac works fine, but the car charger causes the radio to lose the hd signal. So, an adequate device, but not fully useful to replace terrestrial fm reception.

The HD Radio We've All Been Waiting For

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This radio is great! We've been waiting since 2005 for a portable HD Radio, and here it is! It gets great reception even though it uses the headphone cord as the antenna. I've tried it in areas that are at least 40-50 miles away from the stations in our market, and it still has pretty reliable reception at that distance! One of the surprising features is the ability to see what's playing on both (or all three) multicast channels of the station you are on. They call this the "Station Guide." The included headphones are okay, but I strongly recommend using better ones. The only problem I have with it is that it does not get AM HD Radio. Maybe a second generation model will. It's definitely worth buying, for the price, even if you are unsure about HD Radio. I know I would buy another one. It would make a great gift or stocking stuffer idea!

    Great portable HD Radio!!

Great deal for $50!! We've got a batch of new HD2 and HD3 stations in the St. Louis area, and this portable unit does a great job of picking them all up. Nifty readout screen too. If a signal contains HD2 and HD3 stations, it gives you song/artist info for all 3 stations simultaneously on the screen (if the stations are transmitting that info). Very nice! I've let 3 friends borrow mine since I got it last week, and all 3 are buying one for themselves. And 2 of them will drop Sirius/XM because they like this better. But again, it's only great if you live in a city that offers HD stations.

    Flawed Design

The radio has good reception, and seems reliable, BUT, every control on it is so counterintuitive, I got the impression that the engineers goal was to make this unit hard to use. The screen doesn't show you how many HD channels a station is broadcasting: By tuning up for example, you might get HD2 of the current station, or you might get the next higher frequency station. The volume control looks like a knob, but is actually a cheap up down switch. Holding the volume + will not continue to raise the volume. To raise it a lot, you have to press +, wait 1 second, let go, press + wait 1 second, let go, (repeat as necessary). There seems to be a 1 second delay in just about every function actually. To turn it off, you have to press the power button 3 times!!!! Once to get the screen to turn on,Another time to display the station you are listening to, and then a 3rd time and hold for 2 seconds, just to TURN IT OFF!!?? The preset function starts over at P1 everytime, so you cant jump from P4 to P5 with one press.

I really like this radio! Picks up the local Joplin, MO HD radio stations. I purchased it to hear the News-Talk Station on 102.5 HD2 and it sounds awesome and works great. The price is great too! You can't beat the radio for the price.

I like having the ability to use the auxilary to plug the radio into my trucks radio which then gives me HD radio for my truck at a very reasonable price. I do have some trouble with the ability to pick up some stations that I thought would be perfectly clear. Overall though I am please with the quality of the sound and the functinality of the product.

    Great HD Radio

I bought mine over a year ago to use while I work out. Prior to this purchase I went through four other radios. Not only does it provide HD, it also does better than any of the other small radios I tried. The signal at our gym was rather weak. The analog FM even picks up the TV sound being rebroadcast from all the way across the building. None of the other radios I tried could do this. The only downside is that the unit requires a USB power source to charge. On the up side the battery lasts for many hours when fully charged.

Initially I got this for my desk at work,I have poor reception and hoped it would improve. If the radio station comes in good with a regular radio it can pull in the HD signal, if the station has one. It sounds very good with the supplied earbuds, better with high quality ones. I have pluged it into my home radio aux in and even my car radio aux input and could hear a big difference in sound quality. The background noise is very low, high notes sounder cleaner and the bass notes are full and punchy. If you like music to sound it's best HD radio is the way to go and this is a quick and easy way to get it.

I like the radio as a whole but was surprised that it will end up being a throw away. From what I can see the rechargeable battery cannot be replaced when it finally dies. I didn;t know this when I purchased it and don't remember seeing this lack of feature on the packaging or the on line description. I will keep it as long as the battery lasts as it does have good range and sound. It would be great if they make on with a replacable battery.
