Customers are saying
Customers are enthusiastic about the HD Radio Portable Player's sound quality, ease of use, and the ability to receive HD radio broadcasts. Many appreciate its compact size, good battery life, and the clear display. While some users wish for an AM radio band and a longer warranty, the positive feedback on sound quality and reception outweighs these concerns. The price point is also frequently cited as a positive aspect of the product.

Great stocking stuffer
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have a satelite radio and decided to try a HD portable radio. I have a regular HD radio and this is BETTER than the satelite radio. It is free and you get all of the HD channels. Sometimes certain channels lose reception, but if you have a HD radio, you understand this. The radio is a great gift at a affordable price.

HD FM on the go.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Nice little radio. Gets HD FM only. I do enjoy the HD stations that are made listenable by this device. There's nothng to compare it to.at $50 so if you want to listen to HD-FM on the run this is the only way. To be perfect it would need an external antenna wire for better reception when headphones are not plugged in, an AUX OUT for quality connection to a home or auto audio system, larger but fewer buttons with more legible icons, and AM HD capability. I am amazed that so many stations bother to put out an HD signal when there are so few receivers. Why are the stations not promoting receivers? Why doesn't every radio sold today have HD capability? In the early days of FM the stations put their logos on radios and sold them at discounts. Some gave away radios with tuners fixed to their station. Where's the marketing? I want HD to survive and flourish.

Very impressive
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was very pleasantly suprised at the quality of this radio. It has a much better sound than other portable radios from Sony, etc.. and the HD sound is very clear. The headset earphones that come with the radio are cheap and don't really show the full quality of sound that this radio is capable of producing. I am using a pair of $25.00 V-Moda's. and the sound is much improved. The one area that could be improved is the function of the presets. For example, If I am listening to preset 5 and want to move it to 6 or 4, it often starts me at preset 1 again. Also I am not able to set the preset to a sub-HD station, which would be convenient. But, for $49.00, I would say this is a very strong buy.

This thing rocks!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love this new device. I listen to a lot of radio, and like a lot of the HD Radio offerings out there. This thing fits into a pocket very well, it's smaller than your cell phone, and comes with an armband harness if you want to go that route.

Great radio at a great price but..
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great radio if you live within, or near a city. The extra free channels you get are fantastic. Here in Westchester, next to NYC, we have been without a country station for years. Now I can listen to WLTW-HD2 and get country music 24/7. The only drawback is HD radio technology in general. The FCC only lets a station broadcast its HD signal at a fraction of the power of the main analog signal. This means you have to be within 30 or so miles of the station to get all the HD channels. Also remember the reset button. HD radio is digital and thus the radio is a mini computer, if it goes dead reset it just like you would a computer, only faster.

Greatest Ever Owned
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have had this radio since September 2011 and I have used everyday. I walk two miles to work 5 days a week and use it to listen around my house and this is the greatest radio I've ever purchased. I haven't had a problem with this radio, even when I dropped it onto hard concrete. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a reliable portable radio. Two years, no problems, and I plan on getting at least two more years out of it.

Could be better
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Fix the reception and they have a winner. This unit is pretty inexpensive. When it works, it works well. It comes with okay headphones. Poor reception - range about 15 miles. I live about 45 miles from NY - right on Long Island Sound, no mountains, aside from trees and horses, nearly a clear line of sight to Manhattan. The car’s built in HD picked up the Manhattan stations immediately. Car's radio can get most of New York's FM stations. But not this Portable Insignia. Driving to Manhattan this morning, this little Insignia only started to receive the same stations in Pelham, NY - I looked at a map - only about 15 miles from midtown Manhattan. Granted, the Insignia Ant was inside the car. No ext antenna connection, so you cannot improve the range. No AM receiver. To get the AM HD stations, you have to hunt for them in the FM band. Example, WCBS 880 News in NYC is buried on the third channel HD3 of the Oldies Music station 101.1 FM. Not easy to navigate to. Sometimes if it loses the signal, or perhaps after the unit was turned off for a while, the 'Preset' to 101.1 HD3 reverted to 101.1 HD1, so I started getting music instead of news. I didn't notice any difference in sound quality of this unit vs the car's built-in HD. Both have the same HD issues: The sound quality of HD vs FM is barley noticeable. Sometimes worse - as you get a "tin" sounding depending on the bandwidth of the transmitter. Sort of like a low quality MP3. But HD vs AM Radio is a quantum leap, no more hiss and pops. But FM solved the same issue 50 years ago, so all you get with HD is better use of the FM spectrum, and no splash between strong signals on a nearby freq vs weak stations you're trying to listen to. The menus are not too confusing. Nice color screen, but hard to see in sunlight. Using the presets are a little confusing (since I had to read the manual), everything else was straight forward.

quirky and possibly pointless
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.had to reset the unit already, good thing I had the book handy; charging on the computer works out fine; still listening almost exclusively to the same thing as I did before, it is nice to be able to see the song and artist displayed;maybe at some point in the future I'll use it with the headphones again but I truly prefer the speakers a friend gave me the plug in at the headphones spot, an option I wasn't aware of based on information provided with the unit

Has no AM
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was disappointed this is only FM. We have many HD AM stations in my town, I just assumed it would be AM-FM, my bad. I am going to return it and wait for something with AM.

Great for personal use
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I got this on sale for $40 and decided to try this out. I owned portable radios for personal use in the past for a few years, they were great but didn't last long. This Insignia HD Radio has multiple analog and digital stations, which is a plus. Battery life averages a week of use on one charge, given 2-3 hours a day. Charging takes between 2-3 hours depending on battery level.

Very good radio
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I like the size and sound from this radio. Price was good for the quality of the reception. Not good reception in large buildings. Over all, very nice little radio. Highly recommend giving this a try.

Worth the money
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I needed an FM radio to listen to while inside at work and this one seemed to fit the bill. I was suprised when I opened the package and the radio was pretty small. The radio works as I expected and the HD stations in my area sounded incredible. The included headphones actually weren't that bad although I still prefer to use my iPod headphones. The first complaint that I have is a problem inherent with HD radio, that when the radio loses HD signal it "fades" to the regular FM signal. The second complaint I have is that it doesn't work all too well inside my office building however this probably isn't the radios fault and it works great when I am outside. Overall I would recommend this to anyone wanting a portable FM radio with the added capability to listen to not only FM stations in HD but also the multiple channels that each station has to offer.

Overall, great item
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the first portable (i.e. battery-powered) HD Radio receiver and it's amazing for its size and price. The sound quality is better than I expected and even the analog quality and reception are strong. The HD reception is as good as that of my tabletop model and the radio picks up distant stations even in my poor location but as expected the digital signal has trouble in big buildings especially at a distance. The earbuds are a little tricky to fit into the socket so that both buds work, at least on mine. Also the battery life was a little disappointing (as expected with digital); I didn't get the full 10 hours on my first charge. All it all it gets the HD2 channels I bought it for.

don't waste your money
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. In less than 5 months I went through 2 of these units. The first one the sound quit working after a little more than 2 months. Took unit back to store and exchanged for a new one. Once again about 2 months later the very same thing happen. Working fine one day and the next day no sound. I am out of the warrenty so I guess I just threw away $43 bucks. One of my co workers has the same radio and guess what, his did the very same thing. He is out of warrenty also but he paid full price for his ($50). I just threw the second one in the trash today. Also when the radio changes from normal FM and then to HD it is very annoying and it happens all day long. You can't just switch it normal FM. The sound was good when it was working. I would not buy untill they either fix this promblem or they extend the warrenty to a full year. Looks like I will now be buying a Sony Walkman and hope I have better luck. There goes another $40.

Worked well until it didn't
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've used this for almost a year now, and it worked really well up until last week when the menu screen failed. It just went black. The radio still works fine, but I have to flounder a bit to find the stations I want, with no menu feedback to tell me where I am. I also find the buttons difficult to use, and have to sometimes hit them 2-3 times to get a reaction. The way they are recessed makes it hard to tell if I have really pressed them or not. Still, I like the radio and wish there were more HD radios to choose from. I'll probably buy another if they ever go on sale! I would recommend this to a friend WITH CAVEATS.
