Customers are saying

Customers are enthusiastic about the HD Radio Portable Player's sound quality, ease of use, and the ability to receive HD radio broadcasts. Many appreciate its compact size, good battery life, and the clear display. While some users wish for an AM radio band and a longer warranty, the positive feedback on sound quality and reception outweighs these concerns. The price point is also frequently cited as a positive aspect of the product.

    HD channel reception

I was very happy with the radio, until I moved further out to the suburbs of PIttsburgh. Cannot receive any HD channels at all. My location is near the Airport. Not sure if the signals are too low, because I am near an airport or not. Now all I can receive are FM channels. It is very dissappointing to find that out after enjoying the HD channels for only 6 months.

I bought 2 of these radios on line and saved $10 on each radio and picked them up at my local store. The reception was clear and the stations were strong for being in a car on an interstate and I did not have to change stations all the time like most systems. I would not have a problem in giving this system as a gift.

    Barely lasts past warranty!!!

This radio was great...while it lasted. I bought it Feb. 24, 2011. Got the glowing screen of death today, June 27, 2011...even the reset button doesn't do anything. Only 30 days over the 90 day warranty and when I called Insignia, they wouldn't do anything for me. All they said is that sometimes the software can be corrupted or something happens to cause it not to work....Seriously!?!?! A product that costs $50 should last more than 120 days. And if they know that people are have problems with it (as the guy said when I called) they should be more willing to help fix the problem...especially when the problem is in the design. As it stands now, I won't ever buy another Insignia product. I'm just glad Best Buy has other radio options.

    Christmas present

We bought this for my daughter for Christmas. Just perfect for her. But we noticed that she did keep her ear phones on when she listened to the music. That was because the volume button was stuck on the loudest setting it could go. IT was too loud for her. So we went to BEST BUY and exchanged it for a new one. So far the new one works great!

I bought this when it first came out. i had been waiting for a personal HD radio to come out for a while. but i was very disappointed after i used it for a few days. the biggest disappointment was the poor reception. if i walked away from a window in my house it would loose the station i was listening to. i would have to be by window to listen to this radio. when the battery is at full charge the battery run down in about an hour and fifteen minutes. I returned the radio. They let me replace it with a new one, but it was the same as the first one. So I took it back, and they gave me my money back. If manufacture would fix the reception problem, and the short battery life, and add AM (Because AM has HD radio stations too) then this would be a really good HD radio.

Sound is really good. My first experience with ear buds -- better than expected. Reception sometimes drops out, especially when driving, but otherwise very good. I have two other HD radios and listen to jazz on WGUC-HD2 all the time and this works as well as others. I found the arm strap awkward, so I don't use it - I just put the radio in a pocket.

The Insignia® HD Radio Portable Player is okay

This HD radio does not pick up V98.7 HD, smooth jazz station. That's the only reason I purchased this radio. Since V98.7 FM was taken off the FM band, I was uable to listen to my music of choice. None of the other radio stations could compare for music. I was told, by a friend, to buy the Insignia® HD Radio Portable Player, that I would be able to pick V98.7 HD station on this HD portable radio. Well, after purchase I found that the HD radio picks up everything but V98.7 HD station. This is the only station I listen too, at work (10 hours a day). I really need an HD radio that can pick up V98.7 HD station. If someone can recommend a radio, at reasonable pricing, let me know. I really miss my smooth Jazz music while at work.

great product , but rarely have HD reception mostly FM but still better then normal FM ... but I guess it drains battery quick i guess because of picking up HD transmission is a reason behind it ??not sure just my guess .....but still a very much desirable product for any radio lover . unfortunately i have to return mine as it had a very short battery life . I miss this one as its best for my morning walking companion .

    Bad Design

While a rechargeable battery sounds like a good idea, its not. Its a very bad idea because when it goes dead, your out of luck. No changing batteries and going back to work. It wouldnt be too bad if the radio was designed and engineered better. You need to hit the buttons twice to wake it up s you dont accidentaly hit a button. However the Power button only needs to be pushed once. This causes big problems because there are no lights or indicaters to let you know its on, even without headphones plugged in. So if you store it anywhere where it might get touched, it will turn on and run out the batteries which cannot be changed, only charged.

    Junk

I was excited that a portable HD Radio was available (especially at the price point), however this radio really disappoints. The sound quality (with my own ear-buds -- not the included ones) was good. However, that was only when I could get a decent signal. Inside my house, signal was marginal-to-bad. Many stations would stick to analog, and when they did lock on HD, they would fall back often. There is no AM Tuner, so no AM HD stations. I tried using the radio while doing yard work. It would get decent reception as long as you held it, or used the armband, but if you put in on your belt or in a pocket, the signal would disappear. Sometimes it depended on which way you faced. I love in a metro-area with plenty of HD channels, so I'm not impressed. The color screen is washed out. Although still easy to read, for the price point, they could have opted for a better LCD screen. It also lacks the iTunes tagging function. This is going back. The Insignia lacks too many HD features and has far too poor reception. For the same price, you can get a nice MP3 player with a decent screen that plays the tunes you want to hear.

    Bad product or over-hyped technology

We've all heard the commercials about how great HD radio is and that the sound quality is on par with cd. After keeping my eyes open for an affordable radio I saw this one on sale and the reviews were mostly positive. I did not try this with the in-box headphones but instead a much nicer set. At first I got about 3 HD stations in and the analog reception was just ok. I decided to try hooking it up to my receiver and I did get a couple more stations in but the reception was still poor (i made sure the cable was fully extended to get the best reception) and the HD stations did not sound any different than the analog ones. One station was broadcasting 3 different streams, which I received at first, but minutes later the 2 extra ones were gone. Not sure if the radio flaked out or if the station stopped streaming them. Overall i was very disappointed in the radio, and maybe it was just this particular radio but I was not impressed with the quality of HD.

    Insignia® Portable HD Radio

I've had the unit for just a few weeks and so far I've been pleased. Good sound quality on standard and HD FM. There are no audio adjustments, but they are not needed as long as you spring for some quality ear buds or headphones. The AM band would be handy as well. Reception is better than I expected especially on HD. Reception is very hard to predict so what works for me may not work at all where you live. I also would have liked a lanyard attachment. If you don't wear a shirt with a pocket, what do you do with it? I don't do arm bands... I can't really comment on durability and I haven't used it consistently enough to get a handle on the battery life yet - time will tell. I'm very kind to my toys so I expect this little guy will be around for a while. All things considered, I recommend it without hesitation.

This is a great buy. Excellent lock in on HD signals. Good battery life. Design-wise the only thing I don't like is the cover to the charging receptacle, which I fear will break off. I hope the next version will include digital HD TV audio. Maybe that isn't allowed yet by the FCC, but it should be.

I heard about this I thought it would be great to have an inexpensive HD radio you can put in a pocket and hear a multiple of channels. Even has an arm band holder. However I have found that the reception is off and on. Also seeing that it is from Insignia, It could have a bluetooth reicever.

    Don't Bother

Field tested for several days. There are at least 18 HD stations/channels in my area. Number of HD stations this device can receive while moving/driving = 0. Number of HD stations this device can receive while stationary = 2. When you can get a station the sound quality is good but not astonishingly better than regular analog FM radio. The device does switch between analog and digital signals when HD is available but the switch is not clean .. usually a delay of 2-5 seconds where there is absolute silence .. that's right .. no sound whatsoever. I would only recommend considering this for purchase if you live in the heart of a major metro area where HD towers are very nearby .. otherwise don't waste your time or money. If they really want to make this HD Radio thing fly they will need to have much better transmission of the signal.

I´m a old pal. Fan of AM radio. Believed all these years in the promise that HD-RADIO will save AM. Now, I got a small USB charged (charger not included) portable, lithiun battery powered radio, with HD-FM only. Where´s the AM with FM sound? And no tagging to iTunes. Is this a radio or a toy? It is a radio, it´s a failure. If it´s a toy, a would rather buy a iPOD.

As I said I'm on my 3rd unit in 7 days. The first one developed a software glitch after 6 days. It lost all the presets. The unit went to 87.5 and would not tune or turn off. The second one I got tonight had the wrong buttons on one side of the unit. A set of the left side buttons was installed upside down on the right side. I took it back and got #3. I looked on the web and could not find another similar product from a different mfg. Too bad because I would buy someone else's in a heartbeat. Best Buy has been great. Too bad they sell this poorly designed and manufactured product.
