Customers are saying

Customers are enthusiastic about the HD Radio Portable Player's sound quality, ease of use, and the ability to receive HD radio broadcasts. Many appreciate its compact size, good battery life, and the clear display. While some users wish for an AM radio band and a longer warranty, the positive feedback on sound quality and reception outweighs these concerns. The price point is also frequently cited as a positive aspect of the product.

This unit did not quite meet my expectations. While the tuner is strongerr than 90% of the handheld brands, the sound quality was the same as the better brands (Sony Aiwa) that are not HD. The sound quality was no better than the cassette/am/fm units sold in the 1970's (with 2 fm and one am band and easier to program). The latest Sony Walkman (fm only) with the recordable feature can save a song or several hours of a radio broadcast with a longer battery life. The battery took too long to charge. My Golf Buddy gps unit charged faster after four hours of usage. The HD designation is no better than the quad sound manufacturers promised over stereo. I expected surround sound quality.

    A perfect piece of junk

Bought this on a Saturday and returned it Sunday. Not worth forty cents, let alone forty bucks. Couldn't hold HD signal, audio output was weak into mp3 input on my car and screen is difficult to see. Plus, I bet if you dropped this thing just once, it would stop working - with a 90 day warranty, there isn't much room for error. If this were twenty bucks or less, I would have kept it; I suspect we'll see these for sale at deep discount very soon. Still waiting for a decent portable HD radio receiver - this is definately NOT it.

Much smaller than expected, have big hands which makes hard to manipulate. Ear plugs keep falling out of ears, will not fit and stay. Initially it is hard to figure out how to use - have not figured out how program for certain stations on command. Kind of pricey for size and functionality.

    Good little radio

I love talk radio and I could never get good reception as I travel across the state. This little gadget is clear as a bell..wherever I am. Fits in my shirt pocket. Would not have bothered to write this review if I wasn't thrilled with the product.

Only certain locations get HD signals

I purchased two units with excitement to be able to have a better quality radio listening experience vs the old analog way being that I do not have a way to play Pandora or Iheart Radio from my ipod touch at work. So $46-$47 bucks was no issue for me. At home, I could receive all channels clearly, but at work not so much which is where I would need it most. The signals came in fuzzy, and sometimes did not come through at all. I would suggest all who purchase this product to make sure that you are able to get a decent signal for most of the channels you are listening to.

    great price, low reliability!

Was really excited about my new radio. Distortion drives me crazy when I am trying to listen to music or commentary. I really wanted this to work because it would be so easy to take it almost anywhere. Unfortunately, I never got a sound out of it. Powers up, shows station on screen, and then shuts itself off. I exchanged it once, next one did the same thing. I will give the market some time to come up with a better product at a reasonable price.

    I wanted to like it...

I really wanted to like this radio. I received it as a gift from my wife to use on my 30-minute commute to and from work to listen to NPR. It was unbearable. The NPR HD channel could cut out as many as 12-15 times in 20 minutes, each time the interruption could last for seconds to minutes. I can't really blame the terrain, I'd be on the highway, cruising along a flat stretch, and suddenly the radio would cut out. It just didn't work well enough to rely on. I am disappointed. I really wanted this radio to work.

    Only lasts a few months

I owned 4 of these, the first was the original purchase, the last three were warrantee returns. Every time the unit would last about 3 or 4 months, then would mysteriously stop working. Each time I took it back, I would extend out the Best Buy service agreement, which would cost about $10, and leave with a new radio. The last unit that stopped working, I just returned it and got a full refund. This thing is fine while it lasts, but since it only lasts a few months, it's a piece of junk.

Poor signal reception, Sporadic sound output

    Posted .

My first issue was with reception. I had a short auxiliary cord in the car. plugged it in and only received a few HD channels and not the one I was particularly interested in. Since the headset./auxiliary output cord acts as the antenna, I tried a longer one. That worked better. But the cord had to be draped up around my rear view mirror to get adequate reception. This was not satisfactory. While using the unit for the first 10 minutes, it automatically re-booted, even clearing the pre-sets I had programmed. After some time the re-booting stopped for a while. But then the audio would quit. Even while the signal was strong. I would have to cycle the station for the audio to resume. Needless to say, I returned it to Best Buy the same day. No questions asked.

    Needs some upgrsades

This compact HD radio is perfect for those on the go. However, the reception is not that great indoors. Immediately upgrade the earbuds. The ones that come with it are uncomfortable. All in all, it serves its purpose well. I have no regrets about making this purchase.

I returned this item as I was unhappy with the volume. On the highest setting it was not loud, and I never listen to anything that's loud.

HEADPHONES NEEDED... POINTLESS WITH AN AUX IN JACK

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I was planning to plug this item into the AUX IN option on my car stereo and home stereo. Only problem is that by doing so, you essentially have no signal. The headphones that come with it are the antenna. This is great for someone who wishes to use it at the gym... on the bus... or jogging or something... but makes it worthless if you plan to plug it into anything else. I bought this on sale for $40, and for the money liked the headphones and the rechargable battery and the arm band. But, when I plugged it into the car... pointless! No signal without its headphones!!! I was not about to buy a splitter to test to see if that would work... so it went back to Best Buy.

I just returned my third radio and asked for a refund. Love the radio but they're just junk. Seeing how many reviewers have had the exact experience that I've had, I don't understand why Best Buy would keep these on the market without doing a fix. The radio works fine and then one day just dies. All three of mine stopped working in the same way. Turns on, all functions work but no sound. Please Best Buy - fix the problem!

    POOR Reception

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this to listen to one specific local HD substation while at work, though there are 10+ HD radio stations within 10-15 miles of me. I am in my office right now and can SEE my favorite station's broadcast tower. I can SEE it. But do I get HD reception on this little radio? No. Not at all. Not even a little. As a matter of fact, I cannot get ANY local channels in HD unless I am within 3-5 miles of the tower. One of my co-worker has a tabletop HD radio that clearly pulls on ALL the local channels in HD from here at work. All I can get from work with this Insignia portable is a few static-filled analog signals. I would not recommend this radio unless you live next door to your favorite station and don't intend to move around much. =)

    Not for your car...

If you are buying this to use when you our outside it is probably a decent product. Do not purchase this to use in you car. I had planned to use this in my car by plugging it into the iPod input on my car stereo. That part worked, unfortunately, the reception was poor. With HD radio you either have a signal that is good or you have no signal at all. With poor reception, the signal would just go away.

Same complaint as MANY others. After 110 days, NO AUDIO! It appears to work fine, I reset to factory default, and any other trouble shooting I could think of but simply NO SOUND..not even static. Dead, dead dead. C'mon Best Buy, this is s very, very clear problem and someone needs to stand behind this!

    No Sound

I liked my first one of these so much I bought a second as a backup. As a backup I've used it very little. Last week this backup radio just stopped working - fully charged, good signal but NO SOUND. In reading some other reviews I see this is a common problem. I think Best Buy should agree to replace any radio like this that has no sound. There is clearly a design flaw. Too many people with the same problem to be anything else.

Audio stops working within 90 days

I just had the second unit fail, 91 days after the first unit failed. The 1st unit failed just under 90 days after purchase. Looking at the other reviews, I see this is a known problem/defect. Not good for Best Buy to continued to carry a product with a known life of 3 months. Too bad because otherwise it's a nice product.
