Customers are enthusiastic about the HD Radio Portable Player's sound quality, ease of use, and the ability to receive HD radio broadcasts. Many appreciate its compact size, good battery life, and the clear display. While some users wish for an AM radio band and a longer warranty, the positive feedback on sound quality and reception outweighs these concerns. The price point is also frequently cited as a positive aspect of the product.

Good product for the money while it lasted

This was a good product while it lasted. I bought it in April 2010 and have used it at least 3 times a week without failure. Battery life is excellent. However, this week the antena seems to have given out. I can only hear from one earbud. It seems like the connection is lose; if I fiddle with it for a second, the sound comes thru fine but as soon as I release the wire, sound is maintained only thru one side. I guess it is time to move up to MP3 now. If I could raplace the antena, I belive the unit itself is still good, but I cannot find the wire with an antena imbeded. Overall, a decent value for under $50 and a 1.5 year of service.

    Great Little Radio

I commute to DC on a Marc train. No static sounds great. Look at your area and see if you have enough HD stations. DC has 29 stations. Frederick, MD 25 miles N. of my home has 2. Each station has two or more sub channels. I like to listen to NPR, BBC, music, talk, sports etc. If the DJ is too close to the mic you know it. Well recorded music is flawless. Presets allow you to move through your station quickly. Additional information like who is the singer and song are nice. Be carful, device is plastic and will scratch the display cover. Smaller than a cell phone. Glass window would have been nice. Like an ipod. Check your area on the web and see how many station you have. Best thing.. no static on HD station. If you can't get them, you just get silence. No speaker, but you can get a little speaker if you like. I did for the office. Great little device. And you can jack into your car stereo if you have a plug type like for your ipod. DH

I like the idea of a portable HD radio, that is why I bought it. Was a great little radio, but when it came to the HD portion of the radio, it definately needs some serious reception improvements. It worked as long as you were outside, but if in a building it wasn't happening. I ended up returning it for that reason--have a phone for FM radio or a tablet. I wanted the HD. That is all I listen to in my car since WLTE left and changed to country. 104.1 on HD2 is the new WLTE if you liked that channel.

Reception is great! In my truck, in my garage and in the glove compartment. All together! Perfect signal from a station over 20 miles away. Sound quality is every bit as good as my desk-top HD receiver. When I use an FM adapter, too many wires and the sound quality goes way down. But that is NOT the receiver. Glad I have it and will use a headset the majority of the time.

I live in San Jose and work in San Francisco. I take the train to work everyday and can literally hear the reception turn to digital at a certain point in my train ride every morning. It makes a world of difference and sounds absolutely amazing. When I am in San Jose, it sounds like a standard FM radio with nothing special. But when you find that HD signal it is great. The battery life lasts about a week for me, using it two hours a day.

    Great HD Portable Radio

I got this cheaper model the day before the newer Insignia™ HD Radio Portable Player was stocked at my local Best Buy store. I live in the far northern Burb's of Dallas, Texas, 45 miles away from the FM antenna farm located in Ceder Hill Texas. Over the 40 years I have owned many portable radios. This little gem has the best FM receiver I have ever came across in the portable Walkman type radios. In my home I receive all 41 HD broadcasts out of Dallas. When conditions are right I receive 1 Cameron University HD channel from Wichita Falls, TX. That is some 90 miles away from home. I took this little radio on a trip to Marion Indiana and was surprised to receive HD stations from both Indianapolis and Fort Wayne. Indianapolis is 65 miles away from Marion Indiana. The 3 HD stations that were received from Indianapolis were loud and clear with little dropout when the radio was moved around the house or when I went for a neighborhood walk. The Fort Wayne HD stations (50 miles away) stayed on while walking with out measurable dropout. I am very impressed with this radio. I did notice that only one station in Indianapolis (Q95) had the sound quality of most of the HD stations here in Dallas. The other HD2 channels sounded like analog FM. That brings me to Dallas again. Notably I found four HD 2 channels and one HD3 channel I really like to listen to. 50s & 60s Oldies on KLUV, Smooth Jazz on the Oasis, the Indie channel and The Strip HD 2 channels. This makes this $40 investment good one. It sounds great through my Bang & Olufsen hooked to the Bose Surround Sound Speakers. The only bad thing I have to say about this little radio concerns the battery and battery life. It never shows a full charge even if it is plugged in for 10 hours. It does not receive AM HD stations. Other then that It is a great value and has provided a lot of enjoyment into my wife and my life. I would recommend this radio to anyone who wants to get into HD radio cheaply.

I was sick of listening to the same old tunes on my Ipod ...This HD radio is the answer to the boredom.. You get great HD channels with latest music , and also this thing is very light and small , great reception, has a color screen which displays the track title being played and stuff. Also for 50 bucks I think this is an awesome deal..

Great HD radio reception. This radio, however, will not replace my portable FM radio because the Insignia portable has no belt clip, no clip, and no strap attachment loop. The over sized, muscle arm band that comes with the Insignia is too large in general and is to large for my arm, although I do push ups daily.

I was disappointed with sound quality of the satellite radio in my car so I bought this inexpensive HD radio and connected it to my car using the headphone output into the aux input of my car radio. IMHO the sound quality when listening to HD stations is a huge improvement over FM or satellite. Excellent freq response, dynamic response and stereo separation. Very close to CD quality sound. Reception is so-so - forutnately I live about 25 miles from DC so its okay with occasional switching back and forth between HD and normal FM while drving. No problem while using it home. Anything further away however would probably be a problem. It was a bonus to find a couple of new stations that I didnt know existed. I am in process of upgrading the earphones that came with it in order to take full advantage of the excellent sound this little radio provides.

I already have another radio/mp3 player. I use the radio more than the mp3. With the HD Radio function, you can get more station content and information on songs playing. The buttons are easy to use and the ear buds are okay. You can go to HDRadio.com and find HD radio stations in your area.

    Insignia HD Radio

After reading some of the reviews here and other places, I was not sure if this was the way to go to get HD on my car radio. I already have an MP3 player, but sometimes I enjoy listening to the radio. I plugged this into my radio and the sound was awesome compared to standard FM. Its easy to push the preset buttons and go to the next HD station. The battery last 4-5 days using it around 60 minutes a day for my commute. The only problem I have is reception as a drive away from Tampa, I lose the stations eventually but I think that is an inherent problem with all HD radios since the signal is not as strong as FM. The radio does drop down to FM when the station is simulcasting in HD and FM, and the quality is not bad. Overall I think I made a great purchase and I really enjoy the sounds.

    1. Very good reception. When there is not enough signal switches seamlessly to regular FM. Regular FM is better than my other radios. No hissing, noises, interferences. 2. Works with regular headphones. 3. Included armband. 4. Good price. Little on the negatives: 1. Somehow difficult preset setting. 2. Little functionality beyond radio, clock, stop-watch, mp3 would be great!

Great FM radio but inadequate HD radio

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I give it very low marks for usability. It barely does what it says it does. It does tune HD radio but the reception is pretty bad indoors (at the gym). I could barely get a radio signal on the second floor and a fat chance of getting any reception on the first floor at my gym. One of the differences with HD Radio compared to analog is that it requires a second or two to buffer before it actually locks into the station and you hear any sound. Thus, it's not easy to search stations, especially when you're trying to check out secondary stations. That wouldn't be so bad if it had good reception which it doesn't. To add insult to injury, the worst problem with this product is that it doesn't save secondary programmed stations after you power off the unit. If you select a preset after you've programmed it, it will send you directly to the HD2 or HD3 station you've just programmed like it's supposed to but once you power off the device, everything defaults back to the HD1 station of that frequency. Even if you try to power off the device leaving it on the HD2 channel, when you power it back on, it will search for the station and throw you back onto the HD1 station. What's the point of programming if you have to reprogram and/or retune it every time you turn the product on? Bad design! Speaking of using it in the gym, the arm band doesn't have any spandex in it at all and it's shaped like those blood pressure testers. If you actually have muscles, don't plan on having any blood circulating in your arm if you plan to do any type of exercising that raises your heart rate, let alone actually flexing your arm. The wide polyester arm band is completely constricting unlike most MP3 player arm bands which usually cover a lot less of your arm and will move (stretch) with your arm. One suggestion or alternative might be to turn it into a necklace but the device is still a bit too bulky for that compared to popular flash MP3 players and it doesn't have a hole to be tied to a necklace anyway. When you do get reception, it does show the artist and song title if the radio station transmits it but you don't get any features like iPod tagging even though you have to plug it into a computer to charge anyway. The conclusion based on my usage is that this device might be great for grandma who is looking to replace her old portable FM radio anyway, may occasionally browse onto an HD station AND barely knows enough about USB to charge with it instead of a regular outlet. For someone who's got an active lifestyle and is actually looking to add HD radio on the go when you don't have the time to constantly update the music in your MP3 player, this device is not ready for you yet. For me, this is going in my pile of useless gadgets that I've purchased and tried to use maybe once or twice. I haven't tried Slacker yet but the reviews look a lot better as long as it doesn't break on you.

Works great for what I need. I was looking for a portable HD radio with FM and nothing else. I have an ipod so I don't need the MP3 functionality. Price is fair for what you get. Great unit if you are only looking for HD radio and FM.

What can I say? This device is everything Best Buy says it is. It's easy to use and works great with my home stereo when connected directly to the auxiliary inputs on my receiver, in the car when using an FM transmitter, and as a stand alone unit when listening with earphones. I was pleasantly surprised by the Insignia HD Radio's ability to lock on to all available HD stations in my area. Keep in mind that the antenna is the earphone cable or the extension cable when connected to your stereo receiver. Placement of the radio is not an issue and works well in any location in the house or car. A great product for the price!

I really like this radio, the only draw back is that the battery does not last all that long. I have to recharge it daily after a 2 hour workout, the reception is good, the sound quality is great. If not for the issue with the battery I would give it 4 stars

    A Slick Little Unit

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This is a dandy little radio if you don't require AM. I use miniature radios when I'm out on my bike, and this is one of the smaller, easier to manipulate units on the market. I don't have any special need for HD, but it works pretty well. Occasionally there will be an echo for a second or two, and some (not all) HD channels fade in and out, and the HD delay results in you hearing the same phrase twice (and/or losing a phrase). Personally, I don't find this particularly troublesome. In addition, the volume dips briefly from time to time. Again, doesn't disqualify the unit -- the decrease is slight. Why four stars with thesee qualifications? (1) The little screen is terrific, easy to read, lots of info. (2) Sound quality is excellent, perfectly balanced even with cheap headphones. (3) Fits nicely in your pocket and comes with an arm strap. (4) USB charge lasts a long time. Well worth a try.

Pros: By far the least expensive HD receiver at present. Quite good sound quality. Extra sub-channels provided on HD frequencies. Artist name and song title provided on-screen on SOME HD stations. Cons: First one I got broke after 2 days. Best Buy exchanged it. No problem with new one after about 2 weeks. Requires plugging into a computer to recharge. Should be rechargeable from an AC outlet. I bought an AC adapter separately. Cannot preset a sub-channel, only the first channel at a frequency. I don't know whether this is true for all HD receivers, or just this model. Battery life is OK, but the indicator for charge remaining isn't very useful; it seems to show plenty of charge left then dies soon after.

I purchased this product about a year ago and it worked well for about 6 months. I use it almost every day and it still holds a charge well. At about 8 months one of the ear buds was inoperative. I tried using new earbuds, no good. Recently the PS-, PS+ and the on-off button have become hard to use and sometimes unresponsive. I was very happy with the unit until the one earbud stopped working. Now I am looking to replace it. For $50 I would look for something a bit more reliable.
