Customers are enthusiastic about the HD Radio Portable Player's sound quality, ease of use, and the ability to receive HD radio broadcasts. Many appreciate its compact size, good battery life, and the clear display. Excellent first HD receiver

Until this unit appeared, HD radio was an expensive novelty with few choices of receivers to choose from. This refreshingly low-priced receiver allows you to listen via headphones while out and about, or plug the audio output into your stereo system for around-the-house listening. It relies on the headphone cable as its antenna, which limits the reception somewhat. Rechargeable battery has decent playing time, and recharges using USB port on your computer or by means of other chargers which you probably already have (helps keep the price down.) A very good value!

    Nice Radio Works Great

I bought this portable HD radio the first day it came out. After reading the directions and setting up my pre-set channels I'm pleased. The radio is small and easily fits into a shirt pocket or jeans pocket. Has plenty of volume and the display is bright and easy to read. The headphones sound fine but are very difficult to keep in your ear. I wouldn't recommend it for jogging. I do believe you have to use these ear phones as they act as an antenna for the unit. For the money its a good buy.

    A pioneer for HD radio

The first portable HD radio is an excellent value. It sounds wonderful and looks sleek. Since digital signals don't travel as far as analog signals, the reception isn't great but that is to be expected with HD radio and a small antenna. Besides, if a digital signal is not locked then the analog channel is played, so the listener is no worse off in that case. When the signal is strong enough then what out! The earbuds have an excellent sound. The small display limits the song information the device can show.

This radio makes listening to FM great again. HD significantly improves: - Greater dynamic range (no audible compression) - Greater stereo separation - Multipath interference disappears -- HD rides-through conventional FM 'flutter' I use this as a passenger on a multi-hour daily commute in the Colorado Front Range, where there are about 12 commercial and 3 non-commercial stations broadcasting HD. The battery lasts about 8 hours, re-charged by USB. There is no way to open the case to replace the battery. Sensitivity is amazing with the headphone cord antenna. On travel in Rock Hill, SC, I received distant stations from North Wilkesboro and Raleigh. However, it DOES NOT give satisfactory reception through the Aux-In system jacks of 3 cars that I tried. Some features not indicated in the manual: It also receives RDS (giving basic id only). Some stations do broadcast both HD and RDS. When a signal is weak, only RDS will be decoded. When the indicator shows HD1+ or HD2+, that simply means there is another 1 (or 2) more HD program(s) "above" the current one. Wished-for improvements: 0.1 MHz tuning resolution, for use outside North America. Better local strong-signal rejection. Drilled hole or ring in case for a cloth strap

    EXCELLENT HD Pocket Radio

This is my first HD radio, and it's a pip! I'm really blown away by the stunning sound quality. Now granted, I am using Bose Earbuds instead of the cheapo earbuds packed in with the radio. Clearly, you do NOT have to use the supplied earbuds for proper reception! I compared the sound of my favorite analog classical FM station, WQXR, to the sound of the public radio's HD2 station, and as good as WQXR sounds, the HD was MUCH better. Better fidelity, greater dynamic range, complete absence of noise of any kind. I also find HD much LESS prone to signal interruptions and sound glitches than analog FM, both as I walk around the city listening to the radio and sitting listening to it in my apartment. Really the only negative I can cite is the way the screen becomes completely unreadable in bright sunlight. If you have your favorite stations preset, however, you should be able to find your way around the dial without a problem. The other hassle I encountered was convincing the sales people at the local BB that this radio existed and that the store indeed carried it. They didn't know what it was, insisted they didn't stock it, and even suggested I look for an HD radio at Radio Shack! So -- if you want to purchase one of these splendid little radios at a BB store, you'll have to be persistent (hint: look in a locked cabinet in the mp3 department). IMO it's well worth the effort!

    Small HD Wonder!

Finally found one of these little guys - is even smaller than I expected! A bit larger than a book of matches. Piano black finish and color LCD are cool. I have tuned to five presets in my area so far from my house. I am using it as a nightstand radio, plugging into my Klipsch iGroove SXT for iPod speaker system. My wife was impressed with the sound, and the fact the device cost $49.99. Third Insignia product in this household. Keep it up, BB!

This is a fun product. The screen is bright and colorful. Reception is fine for my area. I am getting the WAMU Bluegrass channel in DC from my basement in Arlington VA without a hitch. Tone is satisfactory to me with earphones, and better when I hook it up to the Aux input of my receiver. Could use more presets, but despite what an earlier review said, I am able to set them to channel two or three of a station as well as the prime channel. (I don't know why some are complaining about presets and sensitivity, maybe a quality control issue.) Feels solid, but noting prior reviews I took the two year warranty at $10 extra. For a Bluegrass fan in the DC area this radio is a winner.

Pretty good first exposure to HD radio

Well, I more or less knew what I was getting into here, so my expectations weren't really too high. All in all, it's a nice little radio that is good in any market where HD radio is prevalent. Unfortunately, as I understand it, the FCC isn't yet allowing stations to broadcast at full strength, so the reception is spotty. But, when it is able to receive HD broadcasts (which for me is 75% of the time), the sound is great! I'm happy enough...

    NS-HD01 I LIKE IT!

Having already been well versed in HD Radio (which is Hybrid Digital, NOT High Definition) in the NYC Metro area (I own several HD receivers, car, home and a custom designed portable unit) I was fully aware of the "quirks" of HD Radio.....ie. the drop outs when the digital stream gets interrupted due to signal loss, the switching between conventional to HD modes when in "fringe" areas... similar to SAT Radios when in a high density urban environment. I was surprised and impressed at the NS-HD01receiver's sensitivity and it's ability to lock into a HD data stream in a short time after detection of the HD identifier on the broadcast. I was even able to get it to perform quite well inside my car side-by-side with my car HD Radio on the same HD Station while traveling out from NYC to the suburbs. Since the antenna of the unit is the headphone cable, I suggest that you keep it as long as practically possible to maximize the antenna's ability to receive HD Broadcasts when in weak signal areas or areas that experience "multi-path" distortion (when signals bounce off of buildings and other reflective surfaces and arrive at the antenna at slightly different times, causing the digital signal to become "out of sequence". Bottom line is that this NS-HD01 HD Radio is fantastic for what it is and does, the price, the fact that it is small, lightweight, and works really well. If you are like me and want to listen to more than just the "usual" over the air radio programming that is out there, then HD Radio is a great alternative to subscription based radio receivers.

    HD Radio

This was the only HD pocket type radio I could find at a reasonable price, so I took a chance on it - especially since it was made for Best Buy - a reputable name. I have been very happy with the radio overall and, if you're thinking about trying HD, then I'd give this one a try before I spent a lot on something else. The thing I'm most impressed with is the sound quality. To me, it's like laying there listening to my mp3 or cd player. The stereo coming in from radio amazes me, but I'm an older guy and remember when radios had tubes. Bottom line - I would buy this radio again; I would recommend it to family or a friend. Good luck.

Bought this to use in the car, as my head unit tuner is dying (but aux input works just fine). Got lots of HD channels when I tried it at home, but in the car, only 3 or 4, but they are ones I listen to the most anyway. Flimsy feeling, the buttons are not very responsive. Would have paid a bit more for something with a higher quality feel and better on the go reception, but this was so reasonably priced, I feel I got my money's worth. With the construction and materials, I can't imagine it will have a very long life span, however. I have no problems with battery life, a full charge easily lasts me 5 days of commuting.

Just consider the $9 extended warranty as "Rent"

I have owned 5 of these radios. I LOVE THEM but the Geek Squad guys duck for cover when they see me. I learned to always buy the extended warranty when the first one went quiet at 3 months. Every thing else worked. Just no sound. It was like the mute button was pressed but the mute icon didn't indicate so. Thinking the problem was the earphone jack I performed a little surgery it to try and fix it but the surgery became an autopsy. The problem must be in the firmware or the uC because all the components seem OK. I bought another one with extended warranty. Now I just plan on going back to the store every 6 or 8 months and pay $9 for a new one. They must cost next to nothing to make because many users have reported the same problem on the Insignia website but the problem continues and is very uniform in nature. Either that or BestBuy is taking a bath on their extended warranty.

Here in Denver there must be at least 25 HD stations that I'm able to receive from home using the headphones. Many are commercial free! The quality of sound is crisp and clear. The radio does work in my car with the AUX jack but I've not tried it on the road yet. I'm hopeful that this will replace my Sirius radio which I've not been completely satisfied with along with monthly fees.

I have been looking for a portable HD radio for quite some time. I found a JVC model in the store, however it required a special antenna and did not stock it. After returning the JVC unit I found this model on line and purchased it. It uses the head phone cable as an antenna just like portable FM radios do. The reception is good I live 60 miles from Houston and can pick up a couple of HD Stations. It does receive standard FM radio if no HD is available.

I bought mine used through an Amazon.com merchant. I was delighted when I examined it. It was small, high-tech with a color LCD screen and great sound. I turned it off to charge, using an iPhone plug with a USB jack. When I went back to it less than an hour later, there was no sound. I changed stations and ear buds to no avail. The next day I got a pdf of the manual and learned the volume toggle is a mute button when pressed downward. I first thought this was the solution, but the screen icon showed mute was not on. From these comments I learn my radio is not unique. At least the flaw showed up early so I can return it.

This HD radio offers good value for the price! Good receiption, relatively easy to understand controls, and comes bundled with a arm band strap for use on the go. The only downsides would be the lightweight plastic case that seems to be somewhat cheaply constructed. But for the price that is to be expected. Overall goood designed when used as intended.

Best purchase ever. Love to hike and listen to radio. This thing gives great reception, lots of radio channels are being developed for HD. Only portable HD I could find. Long battery life, rechargeable, great sound, Bought over internet, picked up in store, saved $10.Wish I would never have bought a portable satellite radio and paid subscription cost

This is a great little radio and it sounds great!!! i have had mine since the beginning of summer and I love it except for one thing you can't program an HD 2-3 etc into preset memory the preset will default back to the HD 1 channel. If you are looking for AM this little beuty dosn't offer it ,wich I am glad of that cause I could care less about AM!
