Tv was great until about a month ago. Only had for 25 months and the screen started having dark vertical lines and distorted vertical lines on the right side that are slowly growing, then just today I start seeing horizontal line right across the middle of the screen. So annoying and frustrating. I will reach out to Hisense to see what type of customer care they can offer.

I really wanted to love this tv. I returned my TCL 6 series for this tv. I got it before release day and was pumped. Hooked up my ps5 and was impressed by the brightness and color. But then I noticed there is awful ghosting behind objects anytime motion smoothing is off (i.e. game mode) masically makes it unusable. Unfortunately I will need to return this tv unless a firmware update fixes it in the next week.

I had this for less than a month. The picture was OK. I touched the edge of the screen to adjust the TV and the screen cracked as it is unprotected. This caused part of the screen to go black and and lines across the whole screen. I called HiSense and they were no help. How this can happen so easily and not be a manufacturers defect astounds me but they claim accidental damage. They wouldn’t even recommend anyone who services their TV to get an estimate for repair. I called one locally and he advised that HiSense doesn’t sell replacement screens. This TV may be alright if you wrap it in bubble wrap, as it appears to be about as sturdy as a stick of butter. I will never purchase another HiSense product.

Overall the TV looked and sounded good but I received not one, but two problematic TV sets. The first TV I received had a bunch of dead pixels all over the place and chipped glass. The TV was exchanged and the second set looked better but it had multiple streaks of what looked like rainbows in the picture. On the second TV the apps struggled to work. I had no issue playing back the same apps on the first TV I received or from my Nvidia Shield. Clearly the Hisense QC department is not doing a thorough job. I really wanted to love the U8G but after having received two bad TV sets I have decided to exchange it for a Sony TV instead. Until Hisense can improve their quality control, I'd be cautious when considering this TV.

I’ll start by saying I’m rather “OCD” about picture quality. This TV checks a lot of boxes but also falls short on a few promises. The biggest thing that will ultimately result in you loving or hating this TV will be the settings you input. I will list some below to get you started. This TV has outstanding picture quality if you factor it’s price. Blacks, if set correctly, are very deep. SDR content can be so bright you have to turn the backlight down to save your eyes. HDR content is great in both Dolby Vision and HDR10. The TV does do 120Hz on both my Series X and PS5. One draw back on Series X is that you can’t run Dolby Vision at 120Hz on this display. Another issue is VRR (variable refresh rate). Yes, this display does support VRR, however, local dimming does not work when VRR is enabled. Local dimming is vital to ensuring you get the deepest black levels as it essentially tries to mimic and OLED panel in dark scenes. Honestly, I don’t use 120Hz or VRR for a few major reasons. 99% of games that support 120Hz run at very low resolutions to do so. Often you get smoother gameplay at the expense of losing resolution. This trade off is usually not worth it (for me). I also prefer the look of Dolby Vision over HDR, and I can’t get that with 120Hz. VRR is great, but not at the expense of losing local dimming. Picture quality is far worse without local dimming. There have been many reports of this TV having ghosting issues. I have not experienced this, however, my TV had an update out of the box. Feature wise it’s a Android TV. You can watch every streaming app available via the TV. You can also download various apps that run on Android TV. Few bigger issues in terms of quality, my set has some banding at the backlight level. You can almost see vertical and horizontal lines in bright scenes. Not a huge issue, but noticeable at times. Grey uniformity in good, don’t see dark or “dirty” looking spots in scenes where there’s a lot of grey or off white color. There seems to be an audio lag delay when using Dolby sources via eArc or optical out. I’ve switched to DTS on both consoles and there’s no delay when using audio out pass through. Hoping they update the TV and fix this issue. The biggest thing is settings, I use the following settings, keep in mind each panel is unique so these may not work best! SDR Content- Backlight: 100 (turn to 80 if too bright) Local Dimming: High Contrast: 20 Brightness: 45 (deep blacks) Color: 60 Sharpness: 20 Color Temp: Low Active Contrast: Off All motion/ noise enhancements off HDR/Dolby Vision Content- Backlight: 100 Local Dimming: High Contrast: 55 Brightness: 45 (deep blacks) Color: 65 Sharpness: 20 Color Temp: Low Active Contrast: On All motion/noise enhancement off Make sure HDMI is set to enhanced. Make sure free sync is on for gaming. Reduces latency and increases response time. Overall, for the price, this TV is outstanding for games and movies. I’ve researched and compared and you’ll find it hard to match this quality and price for another brand. When this set is on sale for $750, hands down instant buy. It outperforms TV’s double its price. You won’t be disappointed once it’s calibrated!

DISCLAIMER: The Hisense U8G 55" is our first 4K TV. This means my basis for comparison is 1080P, so yes, obviously I will think the picture is "great" by comparison. However I will share this: First, the picture is the brightest I have ever seen. Find a Best Buy that has one on display (you should call first to confirm they have it on display) and go take a look. For me, there are a couple of settings that are too bright, if there is such a thing. Aside from the brightness I'm impressed with the lack of glare, even with a picture window opposite the TV in our living room. Set-up is quick, the TV is very good at decoding the signal and adjusting, and I like the feature of showing the frame rate and resolution when switching sources. I run an XBox Series X and a 4K Cable Box (Xfinity) through the TV and the picture is smooth and brilliant. The Series X runs at 4K 120 fps using VRR and HDR. Yes, there is a ghosting issue on games running at 120hz that aren't designed for 4K/120. If it bugs you there is the option of unplugging your gaming system's HDMI cable and plugging it into a 60hz input. For what I saved over an OLED, I'll gladly do that until Hisense updates the software to fix this, The application list on the TV is substantial, and I'm able to mimic almost every channel I have on our ROKU box on the TV's 'smarts'- HBO/Max, ESPN, YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Prime, etc. One item of note: All components of my system are hard-wired to my cable modem- I'm not using WiFi. I cannot comment on the speeds of things like 4K YouTube videos streamed over WiFi. Over ethernet they are smooth and spectacular. In summary, I found this TV to look as good as any of the QLED or OLED televisions at the store (in store lighting conditions) and, at a fraction of the price, I'm very happy with this set and believe it to be an excellent bargain.

Very Good TV For The Price

I purchased a 55“ Hisense U8G from BBY because I’ve owned a 55” Hisense H9G in another room for a year now and have been happy with it. The U8G is the 2021 replacement for the older H9G. Most professional reviewers say the U8G (and the H9G) perform for the price and I agree. The U8G has a few upgrades from the H9G, most notably two of the four HDMI ports now meet the HDMI 2.1 standard. The U8G also adds support for the new Dolby Vision IQ standard, but beyond that the two TVs are virtually identical. Both have a native 120Hz refresh rate, support for multiple HDR formats, and very good brightness and contrast numbers. Each of the HDMI inputs can be individually optimized for the source (e.g. game console -vs- streaming stick -vs- Blue Ray player). Picture quality looked great out of the box with no calibration. I did picture calibration anyway using my Disney WOW DVD, but the adjustments were so minor I need not have bothered. Note that the settings menu occupies the entire right 1/3 of the screen and can obscure some test patterns during calibration, so you may need to open and close the TV settings menu repeatedly during some adjustments to check results. Many professional reviews criticize the TV’s viewing angle, but for me its fine. I don’t notice any significant picture degradation until about 45 degrees off-center, and even after that the picture remains decent to at least 60 degrees with only some washout of colors and loss of deep blacks. Beyond 60 degrees it’s still watchable but colors are noticeably washed-out. The built-in speakers are just OK. They are fine for ordinary dialogue and offer good stereo separation, but there is not enough bass punch for an action movie. A minor gripe - Hisense TV user manuals are not that great. The detailed manual is only available on-line and it is written generically to cover several Hisense variants sold in different countries. It’s sometimes hard to tell if the feature or settings described in the manual specifically apply to this TV. Trying to adjust the TV’s settings (of which there are many) ends up being trial & error at times because the detailed manual is sparse and offers minimal explanation of what the different settings actually do. Menu options are sometimes grayed out and unusable due to a setting in a different branch of the menu, but no explanation of the interrelationship is given. Fortunately, the most commonly used settings are easy to find and the TV does not need any tweaking to look good most folks. Overall it’s a very nice TV for the price.

Fantastic picture and sound. Really one of the most intuitive easy to set up devices I have had the pleasure of setting up, especially for use at my own house and not for the office. Product registration is also easy to complete from the TV. The full function Bluetooth remote pretty much work out of the box and quickly gets you on the way to finishing up the initial setup and preference adjustments. There are several preset easy access buttons for some of the major streaming services on the remote as well. Several easy to set sound and picture preferences are available to give the TV a very personal entertainment experience. Another new to me feature that this has that is lacking on my two year old TV in the other room, for the sound is a wall mount setup for the sound which is great for us in its current location. But if a wall mount is not your preference the included heavy duty all metal stands will easily handle this television in a tabletop application. Multiple apps including the major streaming apps come pre installed and can be easily removed if not desired. Any additional apps you want you can get them from the Google Play Store. So far it looks like my add on streaming devices I used on the other TV will no longer be needed as i have not encountered a single thing I had on them that is not now on the television itself. Paring the TV with your phone is very simple with the built in Chromecast.

To start off I’ve tried the Samsung Q90A, LG CX, and Sony X90j. I own a Sony 900h still. I’m also an avid gamer across PC, Xbox, and Ps5. I’m not a fan of motion enhancement on anything and typically turn that function off. So for the Hisense U8G here’s my thoughts and experience. The build quality is excellent and everything appears to be well thought out. It has a premium look and the anti-glare screen is great to have at this price point. The interface is quick and snappy with apps. I didn’t have the best experience with HBO max and Apple TV. I’m not sure if it’s the TV or App but the picture quality in HBO max is really not great. Apple TV looked excellent but would start clocking and timeout due to an error after a few minutes. Restarting the TV and changing the wireless from 2.4ghz to 5ghz did nothing to help. I have 150mb up and down and have no issue on any other device. So to avoid this issue I used Apple TV on ps5 just fine at the cost of losing Dolby vision. That isn’t a deal breaker for me but if you rely on the TV for apps consider yourself warned. Aside from the App debacle gaming on the TV is mostly good. Picture quality, local dimming, brightness etc is all excellent in games. There is a current issue at least present in the 55” involving ghosting when playing 60hz content on a device such as PS5 or Xbox Series X/S on the TVs hdmi 3 & 4 (hdmi 2.1) ports. This does appear to be a software issue as this is resolved in one of two ways, connect the PS5 or Xbox to HDMI ports 1 & 2 (hdmi 2.0) for 60hz games. Or play only games that run at 120hz (such as Call of Duty) while connected to HDMI ports 3 & 4. According to a YouTube and others, Hisense is aware of the issue and working on a fix. If the inconvenience of switching ports when not playing a 120hz game bothers you for now, I would hold off on this TV. This is a non issue for PC players as your RTX 3000 series can set the refresh rate to 120hz all the time. One last note, motion enhancement (think soap opera effect) is not great and supposedly a fix is coming. I had it in briefly and it was filled with artifacts. It’s not great on most TVs except their most expensive sets and I personally don’t like it. If you haven’t given up on the TV through this review and made it this far, here’s what’s great. For under $1000 you will get the wonderful anti-glare filter which is on $1300+ TVs, the best local dimming implementation you’ve ever see, excellent brightness and colors, superb out of box accuracy and just about all of the features of any high end TV. The small bright highlights shine on this which the Sony x90j was a bit terrible with. Small bits of light on it were always very dim. The Hisense does local dimming better than Samsung’s Q90A with mini leds. The problem on it is the local dimming over dims the entire screen so your games or movies can vary in brightness significantly. I think the Hisense has slightly better blooming control. Overall picture quality on the Hisense is just exceptional. You get some blooming but typically very minor. The corners are the only area I wish were better. Local dimming helps but on a dark scene I’d there is light displayed near the corner, the entire corner lights up. It’s absolutely noticeable in a dark room if you run a test but in real world content it looks fine. The other TVs except the Lg have the same problem on some level. So if you have $1000 and don’t mind using the hdmi 2.0 ports 1&2 for gaming since most games don’t play at 120hz anyway and have a backup device for apps like Apple TV etc this is the best choice of a TV at this price. The picture quality bests most $1300 TVs especially the Sony and is worlds cheaper than the Samsung for matching and better picture quality in some cases. The Samsung can get blindingly brighter but not by much. A side note I found that the 55” inch Hisense does actually appear more clear than the 50” Sony. I don’t know what Sony did but it really seemed worse than the 900h with the exception of some slightly improved contrast. Good luck on your search and hope this helps!

I purchased the Hisense UG Series Quantum TV 55” about a month ago. The whole family loves it. My 9 year old daughter’s favorite part is that you can ask it to do everything. “Hey Google” turn on TV, “Hey Google” play music. I tried to explain to her there is a controller but why would she want to use that, Right… The picture and brightness of the screen is amazing, it lights up our whole living room. You feel like you are inside the screen. A big step up for our last smart TV. At first I was noticing a bit of fuzziness when we were watching certain shows. I don’t believe it’s a problem with the TV but with the show we were watching; it wasn’t recorded in HD quality. The highly detailed video games my husband plays on it really show how beautiful the HD is. The user interface is really well designed. Everyone in my family has adjusted quickly to using this new TV and controller. There are a half dozen quick connect buttons to Apps like Disney Plus and Netflix which I love. My 9 year old daughter has had no problems getting to the Apps she likes as well. It may be a small thing but the TV was really well packaged and the TV was in perfect condition when we unpacked it. My husband set up the TV and he said it was pretty easy to set up and connect our current Apps and PlayStation. This product was received at a promotional price in return for a honest review.
