As good as LoTR was, I have been disappointed with The Hobbit. What should have been two movies, at best, has been stretched to three for $. Yes, the effects were great but added too many unnecessary elements.

I was always a fan of the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, and now I love the HOBBIT as well. It has been a long time since I read all the books so I can't comment specifically about how well this follows the story. The cinematography was top notch. Their rendition of Smaug did not disappoint. They did, however, leave you wanting to see more. All in all, this is definitely one of those movies I wanted to own and I am happy to have the 3D edition, since this movie was meant to be seen in 3D.

Great 2nd part to the book

This is one of the best stories written and we have a complete set of movies to show those who have not read the book what to expect when the read the book. It is only part 2 of 3 parts and I can hardly wait for the last movie to hit theaters. I do not attend movies in theaters but at least this way I know that it will be available on Blu-Ray soon after that. I know that I will watch the first and second movies before I complete the last release but I will have to wait until then.

From the moment the film begins, I was hooked. Throughout the film you are greeted with amazing visuals, breathtaking cinematography, great acting, and a well round story. Despite many doubts by "Tolkienists" and some reviewers, this is a beautiful film that had me realing with excitement. Treat this as a movie on its own, and don't try to compare it to the source material. Peter Jackson has succeeded once again. I look forward to "There and Back Again" and it will be just as good.

Having survived the first part of their unsettling journey, Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and his companions (Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage) continue east. More dangers await them, including the skin-changer Beorn and the giant spiders of Milkwood. After escaping capture by the dangerous Wood Elves, Bilbo and the dwarves journey to Lake-town and, finally, to the Lonely Mountain, where they face the greatest danger of all: the fearsome dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch).

Peter Jackson did a great job with the 3D version of this movie. I have a 42" LC 3D TV (with passive 3D glasses) and the 3D effect is AWESOME. It's almost as good as sitting in a 3D theater. I really liked the movie, classic good versus evil and the special effects are superb. I own all 3 Hobbit movies on 3D and also the Lord of the Rings trilogy, they are the only movies I own on 3D. They are fantastic. If you've been wondering if "3D" is worth it - I say YES.

The continuation of The Hobbit Trilogy takes a frightful turn with the encounter between Bilbo and the great leviathan known as Smaug, even as Thorin Oakenshield leads his band of dwarves against the forces of the White Orc, Azog The Defiler. And, as Gandalf discovers to his surprise, an old enemy begins to gather his forces in an effort to rise back to power. It's an exceptional film, and I'm glad I added it to my collection!

While this movie took a few liberties with the novel, it stayed very close to the book in in style and general concepts. The idea of breaking the novel down into several movies allowed more detail and character development than would have been possible in a single movie of any tolerable length. The viewer has to keep in mind that this is only the middle of the novel and has no real beginning or end. With that in mind, this was an excellent movie.

I have read, "The Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings" many years ago. I remember the stories well, and have not been disappointed with what Peter Jackson and his entourage have offered us . Obviously, for time constraints, there had to be omissions, but the additions have worked in very well. Visually stunning. Never a dull moment, and the action scenes are quite intense. Even if you are not a Tolkien geek, these movies stand up very well on pure entertainment value. Buy it!

There are SO many things that I love about this movie that it is hard to know where to begin! The casting, soundtrack, cinematography, effects, everything is amazing and breathtaking! This is a movie that I will enjoy watching and re-watching for years to come. No one could have done justice to this story like Peter Jackson. My ONLY complaint about the movie is the forced 'love triangle' between Kili, Tauriel and Legolas. This was an un-necessary addition to the story.

Overall, this movie entertains but does not enthrall. It builds on the lessons and technology pioneered and perfected in LotR. The added back-stories are believable and mesh well into the core plot, the special effects are well done, the musical themes, some revisited from LotR, complement the characters and scenes. However, given that this story was never intended to be the compelling epic that was LotR, it can only be stretched so far before breaking. This installment could have made its point, in good tempo, with 45-60 minutes strategically edited. By contrast, Lord of the Rings could barely be contained in a trilogy. I would gladly trade an hour of DoS in exchange for 2-3 of the precious hours excised from the original LotR.

A good sequel to the 1st Hobbit movie; it picks up right where the Unexpected Journey left off. This is another sweeping adventure from Peter Jackson. Some parts are a little slow, but "The Hobbit" is only one small book, so it is a bit of a stretch to make it into 3 movies. But Peter Jackson fans will enjoy the great cinematography and plenty of action. The movie just abruptly ends, leaving you waiting for the end of the story (hopefully coming next year in part 3).

I have always enjoyed high adventure films and love the lore of ancient times. The magic, the freedom to explore, the tales of old but nothing compares to my fascination of dragon stories found all over the world. I have always enjoyed the mystery, magic, power and intelligence of Dragons and finally this film brings you face to face with a magical beast that you won't soon forget. The acting is superb and the flow of the movie draws you in and keeps you entranced.

Peter Jackson is at his best, telling his version of this Middle Earth tale. The second film, of what will be the three known as simply "The Hobbit," adds some characters that were not in the original work. However, the action, and interaction of these characters does a wonderful job of bringing imagination and the written word to life. The barrel-riding scene can not just be viewed once. This is a perfect place to use those rewind and play buttons on the remote.

I've been waiting for the extended edition of this movie to come out because I didn't want to own the original release, but the bonus Thorin's Key replica exclusive that comes with Best Buy's release was what really got me to rush out and buy the movie at BB. The replica is great quality, and very heavy. I haven't actually gotten around to sitting down and watching the extended movie yet, so I won't comment on that, but the packaging and the key are great.

Better than the first Hobbit movie

This movie is much better than the first Hobbit movie which I found a bit boring. There are lots of good action sequences with the elves especially, and the story is more enaging. The ending is the classic "until the next film" thats so commonplace with the other LOTR films. The 3D is alright, there are some scenes in the Mirkwood forest that are really cool, but the rest is just ok. It's nowhere near Avatar good if you are looking for a great 3D film. The downside for the 3D version is that it is on 2 discs, and it literally cuts a character off in mid sentence to show you the "please insert disc 2" screen. Disc 2 recaps what you missed a little, but it's still kind of a bummer. I know it's because the 3D data is massive, but still.

Peter Jackson's second entry in his Hobbit trilogy is incredibly fast-paced, always keeping its characters moving forward even as the plot around them grows denser and denser. It's a stronger entry than the first, and, while Tolkien purists will whine about the additions (not revisions) made to the story for decades to come (as per internet tradition), the fact remains that this is a very fun film that feels much, much shorter than its near 3 hour running time.

Peter Jackson is once again totally awesome at telling the Tolkien Classic tale. The cinematography is incredible & the special effects are outrageously realistic. The actors do a superb job of bringing these characters to life. The dragon Smaug is totally believable & quite the villain. Jackson used some artistic license by adding Legolas to the movie to bring the Hobbit & the Lord of the Rings trilogy together, but out side of that remains true to the book.

As much as I would like to review this properly, Best Buy feels I have the time to watch all the feature of the extended edition in just a few days. I bought this because I have the Fellowship trilogy extended editions and wanted to get the extended versions of the Hobbit. If you want to get all the material that wasn't included in the regular blu ray version, this is the version to get. And the shrink wrap is still in perfect shape after three days.

I liked the Key, that came with the movie. I was difficult to tell what the extra bits were while watching the movie. The CGI is well done, Weta Workshop works on so many other movies They know what they are doing now. The casting of Martin Freeman (Dr. Watson) opposite Benedict Cumberbatch, (Sherlock Holmes) was brilliant. They have added characters to the movie that were not in the book, but they blend well with the overall story. I liked the movie.
