Customers are saying

Customers express satisfaction with the 450 Sq. Ft. Portable Air Conditioner's cooling power and its ability to cool their entire apartment quickly. They also appreciate its easy setup and portability. However, some customers find the noise level to be a bit loud on the high setting. Additionally, it requires a window to be open in order to use it, which may not be ideal for all users.

    GOOD UNIT

We've had a Sharp portable air conditioning unit for 9 years; it finally died on us. We needed a replacement fast. We looked at reviews of many brands; this fit our needs. We think the window bracket kit/exhaust is made better than the Sharp. The unit is not as modern looking as we would have liked, but it is a good size. We had to laugh at ourselves because when we turned it on we expected the air outlet to automatically open. We realized we had to pull it open ourselves, but probably better in the end; less things to go wrong! We haven't been using it since it cooled down, but we did try it out and it seems to have good power (L - H- M) to blow out air. Also the only weird thing I think, is the fan speed control goes LOW/HIGH/MID, as opposed to what I would have expected (LOW/MID/HIGH) but that's okay. Hopefully it will last us a good few years until we can get central air!!!! We were thankful Best Buy had it in stock! (other places did not!)

    Great AC

The unit is exceptional, well made and easy to use controls. I liked the size and it wasn't too hard to move. I ordered a Cool Aide insulator sleeve, found online, which insulates the exhaust hose. Otherwise, the hose is about 100 degrees and is heating the room that I am trying to cool. I learned this is necessary for portable air considtioners. Worked perfectly. All around recommend this unit highly.

Still running like new. Keep the filters clean, follow the placement directions and you shouldn't have any trouble. The wheels are WONDERFUL to move it into another space. The programming is nice to control the effects on your electric bill, too.

We needed an air conditioner in a pinch due to our HVAC dying and not being able to get someone to come out for a week in the dead middle of summer. Before looking, I didn't even know you could get a portable AC unit that doesn't require constant draining so that feature is a welcome surprise. We slapped this puppy in our bedroom and set up the vent out the window in fairly quick fashion. I managed to break the small plastic pins that come with the window bracket, so be careful with those, they are low quality. The window also doesn't close all the way due to the uneven size of the bracket and sliding extension piece, so we stuffed the gap with socks. Overall the unit does a good, not great, job of cooling the room. I like it very cold at night and unfortunately this unit cannot get the room any cooler than 70 and the air that comes out is more cool than cold. The bedroom is pretty well insulated so I'm not sure why it has such a hard time getting the temperature down. I was expecting something of this size and price to overall do a better job but it beats sleeping in a humid 85 degree room. Noise doesn't really bother me, I usually sleep with a loud tower fan and this isn't much different. Exhaust hose does get very warm when the unit is under load and is a bit concerning but we haven't had any problems yet. Overall I would go with another product over this one if I had to purchase again.

Works very well for a single room or for to small conjoined rooms. I live in an area with high humidity and have to empty the unit every other day. Filter is easy to clean. Unit is ready to set up immediately and it cools off the room quickly. Is very quiet. Well worth the money. Great alternative if you can't have a window unit.

1/2" lower drain hose permanently connected!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Cooling works great in about 550 sq ft area, however due to very humid Long Island summers (usually over 70%) the room was smelling like mildew because the machine was collecting so much water inside. I ended up having to permanently connect 1/2" clear tubing (a couple bucks at home improvement store) and run it to a bucket. I also had to raise the a/c up a bit so the pitch would be right for the hose to properly drain. This also requires manually emptying the bucket every night which believe it or not ends up being 1 - 3 gallons of water a day! So I guess you can say I'm running it as a dehumidifier while using it as an a/c. Of course I'd rather not have to do this as it shouldn't require it, but it's working fine for now with no more smell. All venting is correct and I've used portable A/Cs in the past so those are not issues. Haven't used heat yet.

We are glad to know that the portable air conditioner is working well to cool the space you need it to. Our units work on self evaporation and do not need to be drained unless operating in very humid conditions. When the humidity levels are on the higher side, the portable air conditioner will collect water condensation inside the water tank, that will need to be emptied manually. When using the unit only as a dehumidifier, continuous drainage is recommended. Our customer support team will be able to assist and troubleshoot any concerns for you. Please call us at 1-800-474-2147, Monday - Friday 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM (EST), or send us an email at [email protected], with the reference code number BBC0719. This AC claims to cool a room up to 450sq feet. In reality it doesnt keep the master bedroom in my apartment cool during a hot day. My room cant be more than 150sq feet and if its a 90 degree day the AC cant keep up and my room sits at 76-78 degrees. During the night the AC does help to get the room down to 69 degrees, but the next day its back up to the mid 70s. I will say this is an older apartment, so insulation might not be up to par, and we are on the top floor, so hit first by the sun, but i was expecting such a strong AC to still cool a room less than half the size its claims.

We are sorry to hear this ! Our units work best in enclosed, well insulated spaces. Room environment conditions such as ceiling height, sunlight, number of windows/ doors and level of insulation can affect cooling efficiency and there are ways to increase the capacity of these units. There could be other reasons for the unit to not cool- temperature setting could be too high, or the exhaust hose may need re-installation to avoid the heat from coming back into the room. Please do give us a call at 1-800-474-2147, Monday - Friday 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM (EST), or send us an email at [email protected] with the reference code number BBC0802. I purchased two of these units (from BEST BUY), one for my condominium and one for my mother-in-law's condominium...both condos have the exact same floor plan and window arrangement. The first thing I noticed when I unboxed the unit was that the exhaust tube was very short, and when it was installed, it became even shorter because you have to bend it up from the back of the air conditioner and bend it again at the window. The power cord length was ok. The unit looks nice, well built, and everything is plastic. My windows are "sliders" going right to left and the base of the window is 60 inches from the floor. I had to get a small table to set the unit on...in order for the exhaust tube to reach the window opening. I was able to put the adjustable window piece (the exhaust tube hooks into) into a vertical position to accommodate the slider. Because the window frame has an area that the actual window slides into, I put a 2x2 piece of wood into the frame first, then put the AC plastic piece in, and then closed the window up against the plastic insert, and put another 2x2 into the track so that the window could no be slid open from the outside, and so that the AC window piece would stay in place. I then duct taped the plastic insert to the actual window frame. There is a small gap between the plastic insert and the edge of the window itself. The AC unit is very heavy, and you may need help in lifting or moving it, although it does roll very easily (even on carpet) on its wheels. NOTE: The INSTRUCTION BOOK and the INSTRUCTIONS on the AC unit itself say, DO NOT.. EXTEND THE LENGTH OF THE EXHAUST DUCT. That means that you should not add (for example) a 10' section of tube to exhaust the AC out the window. According to the instructions, adding length could cause damage to the AC unit itself. Instructions also say, "Do not add an extension electrical cord." The exhaust from the AC unit that goes out the window is very warm and similar to the volume of exhaust from a clothes dryer. The instrument panel is easy to understand and to operate and so is the remote. I set the AC temp for 73... temp outside was around 90 at its worse. The unit does blow fairly decent cold air in a straight line out the top. The air volume is barely enough to cool down (for example) a small bedroom. If your room opens into another adjacent room, the cold air will not go into the other room. The air from my unit didn't even cool down a small 7x7 room directly to the left of where the unit was sitting. It did cool down the area directly in front of it, but not to a great extent. The room temperature stayed at 78 for the most part. Without the air conditioner, and using just floor fans, the room would stay at 80-81. I only used my two units for less than 2 days and decided that they were not going to work for me. NOT cold enough and the short exhaust tube was a real problem. The AC unit sitting on a folding table was just an accident waiting to happen. Instructions say the unit must be 20" from the wall which made the table have to sit even further out into the room. When I took it back to Best Buy, I was met by a "mini-manager" that gave me the "third degree"... "Where did you buy it," "Did you use it," "DId it come from the internet"..and on and on. He was clearly not happy to see the units not come back to his store. I asked if returning them was a problem and he said "yes,"... he could not resell them if I used them. As an ELITE Best Buy member, I have purchased a lot of items from Best Buy, and this is sure a new one for me. I might add that when I bought the two units, I asked if they could be returned if I did not like them, and of course, the answer was yes... "You can return anything to Best Buy." After a great deal of intrigue with the "mini-manager," he said that he would have to talk to the "maxi-manager"....and of course, the "maxi-manager"... said "Yes," of course we will accept them...as long as they were not broken." From what I gather, he planned to put them out on the floor, discounted. I also showed both managers a photo of how I had to install the units on a table, and both managers said the installation was really not their concern, They said that most people add more length to the exhaust tube to accommodate their installation needs. I told them that was a no-no, but they seemed to suggest that THAT...is what most people do anyway. All is well that ends well...they took them back and I received a refund. I had the units 10 days, but only used them for a tad more than one and a half days. They were in perfect re-sellable condition. IF you have a small room, with regular slide up and down windows that are only a foot or two above the floor, and there is an outlet right there at the window (instructions say no extension cord use), and if your small room only opens to one door, and you don't mind quite a bit of noise, I think this unit might be ok for your use. Note, it is a fairly expensive unit for what it does. Note too: If you buy your unit from Best Buy or anyone else for that matter, get a very clear understanding as to what the return policy is ...if you use it and you are not happy with it...for any reason.

I picked up this item almost 2 weeks ago in Aiea. The guy who helped me said to let it stand/rest for 4 hours before using it so I did. The manual said 1 hour. When I opened the box, the unit was wet. It seems like something leaked out but it was not a lot so i continued to install it. Not a problem, my window goes down to the floor. First impression, the unit is loud when on aircon mode but the air it blows is not cold, just a tad cooler than fan air. I thought maybe it needs time so i waited but until now it still not doing what its supposed to do! It's ridiculous because with my door and window closed, the room is hotter than outside. I really want this to work. It is a big hassle to return this because it's heavy and my apartment is in the second floor and there is no elevator. But I don't want to pay almost $500 for a fan either.

noisy and energy hungry product, that needs to run for hours to maybe make your room 1-2 degree cooler :( If you read the manufactures description carefully it will let you know its only a spot cooler, so you have to sit in front of it to feel the cold... If you try to get the room cold good luck, unless its a very small room.. 200 sq

I don't think the rating on this is completely accurate. On the really hot days, this unit will take hours to cool down our room which is within the square footage of this unit's limits. Also, it doesn't have a seal for the exhaust through the window. I think portable units don't work as well as window units.

I bought this unit for my bed/bath area when my heat pump quit. The description states it cools 400 sq ft but the box states 350 sq ft. Got it home and ran it from about 2PM to 10 PM to cool area down 10 degrees. Overnight I dropped the temperature 4 degrees more to 74. Decided to turn off the unit for several hours. I then turned it back on when house climbed to 79. As the day heated up the unit ran nonstop and will not drop the temp below 84. Outside temp is 89 with heat index of 103. The room is only about 250 sq ft. It is better than nothing since the rest of the house is 92. I would not recommend as something to be used on a regular basis. Guess I'll have to make do till the central air is fixed.

I got this unit for a space thats about 350 sq ft. The unit is 10,000 BTU which is what is recommended for a room 2-3 times bigger. The air really doesn't make the room cold at all. It only at best makes the room "cool" on a cloudy day, and on a full sunny day the room stays very hot. you only feel the cold air if you are about a foot away from the unit.
