Finally an improved alternative to the Nest
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.- Summary - Pros: - Great app (quick, responsive, reliable, feature-filled) - Great website - Love the ability to customize your color scheme - Indoor & Outdoor temp/humidity reads very accurately - Circulate setting - Great scheduling options & control from the app, website, and wall unit - Super easy installation So at this point you can gather I'm very happy with this thermostat and would highly recommend it. But it's not perfect. Here are some very minor things that perhaps Honeywell could address in a future version: Cons: - You can't save custom color schemes, 3-8 custom save slots would be awesome - You can't edit the current custom color scheme; to make a slight change, you have to start from scratch - No wifi-only mode, which would allow you to maintain remote control of the thermostat if your internet, or Honeywell's servers, are ever down (my Samsung smart TV app can control my TV over wifi without talking to a Samsung server, for example) - to clarify, you are still able to control your thermostat from the wall unit if there is ever an internet connectivity issue - You can adjust the inactivity brightness on the wall unit, but not the active brightness - A great feature would be to tie inactive brightness to your heating/cooling schedules, so you could tell it to go to brightness 1 when sleeping or away, to reduce power consumption - No auto-login option on the app - No remember password, or auto-login option on the website - Web address is impossible to remember (https colon slash slash rs.alarmnet dot com/TotalConnectComfort/Home/), not usually a big deal since you can bookmark or google it, but how hard would it be for Honeywell to use a simpler address like "myhoneywell dot com" instead (just checked, it's not even being used at the moment) - it would also be nice to be able to access the device through your home intranet by just navigating to the device's IP address in a web browser, like I can on my sprinkler controller, which would again reduce dependency on Honeywell's servers or an internet connection in general - The pro-install (2-wire) version of this thermostat comes in white, black, and silver. This consumer version only comes in the worst of those three options, silver (really a 2002-era color). White/black options would be great! - Ability to control the circulation sensitivity would be nice. So you can adjust up/down from Honeywell's stated default of 35%. - Ability to control the temperature swing. I like the +-1 degree swing personally, but just in case any of the Nest fans enjoy its inferior +-3 degree swings, why not just make that a user-selectable setting from 1 to 5 degrees in each direction, and let the user decide what's best? To conclude, this is an awesome thermostat, and the very trivial cons would reduce its score to about 98/100. While not perfect, on a scale of 1 to 5 stars, this places it at a very solid 5. The price is a little high, but identical to the significantly lower functionality of the Nest, and a lower price than the ecobee. So it is absolutely the best value currently on the market for smart thermostats, and I have not regretted my purchase for even a second.

Couldn't install myself

I ran into an issue and it was a nightmare contacting someone from Honeywell customer support. I ended up just going with something more basic. I'd recommend having the Geek Squad set it up for you to avoid the headache this caused me.

Require Common "C" Wire

Didn't work for me. Unlike the Nest thermostat, it is not smart enough to use the power from the red "R" wire to get power. I recommend the Nest thermostat since it offers more options for retrofit uses.

Wasn't able to use it

Before you purchase, be sure you are able to use it as if you do not have that third wire, it is no good. I'm sure I would have loved it if I could have used it.

Great start to home automation

The install was very easy and straight forward as well as downloading and setting up the phone app. I really like the custom screen colors that you can change anytime you want and being able to change the temperature also saves on my electric bill. I have already got so many compliments from visitors and even had a friend go purchase one after using mine.

Great concept although not designed for humid clim

Returned the unit and replaced with the honeywell $30 thermostat and the house cooled within 2 hours. The honeywell customer service is absolutely horrible!

I saw people complain a little about having to log into the app every time they open it, you can set the app to save your info that way you only need to click one button. Besides do you really want anyone who finds your phone to be able to control one of the most expensive utilities in your home? I love the customization and how easy it is to create the schedule. Also is I am in my office/bedroom and a little chilly because it is set to my away temp, I just grab my phone and turn it up. Literally just did that a second ago. Amazing product with everything I was looking for.

Not a good thermostat

Great product

The app for my iPad and iPhone works great. The event scheduler work better than my control4 system. It also shows me outside tempature and a 5 day forecast. Would recommend this to anyone.

Total Control / Excellent Interface & CS
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had reviewed all of the similar thermostats (Nest, Ecobee, Etc) available and found the RTH9580 the optimum for ease of use and user ability to control my HVAC System to my settings opposed to the Learning Thermostats. The menu is is extremely user friendly and sitting at my Mac to program the Thermostat was a pleasure. Set, submit, done. This is a small and beautiful unit that fits any color scheme in my home. The App works great and having the ability to control my unit while away from home is terrific. I can be away, the weather can change dramatically and simply raise/lower my temperature prior to returning home is great. My home is tight and has a very solid "R" rating and can become stuffy when outside temps rise. Being able to control my fan settings has resolved that issue fully. I did have one question regarding a Jumper on my old thermostat, called Honeywell on a Sunday afternoon to find a live person that answered my question immediately, wired in the Honeywell and set off to program. Simple yet packed with options. A great addition to my home and excellent customer service from Honeywell. Just make sure you check your current thermostat for the "C" (24v) wire beforehand. Without the "C" wire you will be looking at a lengthy installation which is the case with all new Wi-Fi or learning Thermostats. One extra Star as this unit is so easy to use even my Wife even loves it...It's a Win, Win

Easy to Program and Remote Access is Great
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.This product replaced a 13 year old Maple Chase programmable thermostat on a high efficiency HVAC system. I had no issues with the old unit but I wanted the remote access the Honeywell unit provides. It was easy to install and program and the remote access through the app on my android phone works fine, although there seems to be more access problems when on public wifi systems in retail stores, etc. Shutting off the wifi on my phone to force access on my provider network usually works, as I had already learned with the remote access of my garage door opener. Upon successful connection to wifi, a software update began downloading, which required at least an hour to complete. I made no other changes until the update was complete, which I think is a wise approach for all users. I agree with others that the app login is a needless step that should be user configurable (as on my garage door system). I've only had the new unit installed for a week but I already notice the house is more consistently comfortable in the heating mode. I won't know until my next bill if there will be a price to pay for this, and I won't know until next summer how well the A/C control works. My only issue so far is that the main display does not indicate the current active HVAC heating/cooling stage in use. The old unit did so, letting me know when fuel usage was higher, as well as when a problem existed in the HVAC system. I have learned though that I can look at the equipment status display to get this information, just don't understand why it can't be displayed for immediate reference. I sent Honeywell a note about this from their website but have not yet received a reply. Otherwise, I do like the small size, and I've used the custom color background feature to match my wall color. These features tend to make the unit less noticeable, which is good in its foyer location. Also, I've had no temperature accuracy issues, as I've read about in other reviews. In general, I am pleased with this purchase and may add or delete a star based on longer term performance.
