I bought this on sale to replace an HP desktop that I bought at BestBuy back in 2009. I was long overdue for an upgrade. I couldn't be happier with this beast. The SSD allows for insanely quick start up or restart times. Something like 10-15 seconds. I also have more than enough power to do all the video editing I need to do as a Youtuber. I can render 1080p videos in just a minute or so. With my old desktop it would take and hour. This thing meets and exceeds all my expectations as a desktop. Very happy with it!

HP - Gaming Desktop - AMD Ryzen 7-Series - 16GB Memory - AMD Radeon RX 580 - 1TB Hard Drive + 128GB Solid State Drive - Shadow Black With A Brushed Hairline Pattern The HP - Gaming Desktop - AMD Ryzen 7-Series is a nice starter gaming PC at the entry level and was intended to play games at the popular 1080p resolution. It is not really intended to play at higher resolutions although you can, just be prepared to turn some of the graphics setting down. This is normal for an RX 580 which is a good graphics card and where it plays the best. Looking inside the small mid sized chassis you will find it cramped with the dreaded OEM non-standard designed parts. You can do some limited upgrades but I don’t really think you should buy it with that in mind. Other reviewers go into great detail on the specifications but in brief, you have a good gaming video card in the RX 580. It is a 4Gb card but at 1080p that will be fine for most games today. The processor is probably the bigger star here. The Ryzen 7 2700 is a fine processor and will play games well and do most any office tasks as well. Paired with the 16Gb of ram and an SSD drive assures snappy performance. I do wish HP had used a larger 250Gb SSD inside but you can work with the provided 128Gb drive, you just need to put most big files on the second 1Tb HDD. I think this is a great home office computer for someone who also wants to do some gaming. You could also make the case this is a fine family computer. It can do anything most people do on the internet, it will play most games very well when needed and is small enough it can fit on any desk. This is not a computer for a experienced PC gamer or for someone who wants to buy it today and upgrade it later. I have enjoyed this computer and respect the amount of power packed inside this small chassis. Buy it, take it home or to work and and enjoy it’s versability. BYW, it is small but looks good. It has a touch of the popular gaming look with some mild lighting on the front but no so much it can’t fit well in most any decor. The mouse and keyboard are average at best. And don’t be afraid to uninstall the included applications you don’t need like the virus protection package.

So far I have been really impressed with this HP Gaming Desktop Unit. It has really been able to handle everything I have thrown at it! PROS: - The design is really sharp. It is fairly small for a gaming console which I like. The brushed steel with the green lighting really looks great too! - This thing has a lot of power under the hood! It can easily handle any gaming I have thrown it’s way as well as other programs I run. - The combo Harddrive and SSD is a game changer. SSD is so much faster but can be high priced. It’s nice to have games on the SSD for fast load times while having other media and files on the standard harddrive. - I really like the addition of the USB-C on the front. It’s a nice feature and helps it be future proof. CONS: - The keyboard and mouse that come with it are very generic. I would expect something with a little more style and color with a gaming consoles, especially with how the tower looks. - It only has 1 HDMI port with an option for one more. I wish it had two from the get go. BOTTOM LINE: If you are looking for a new tower that can handle your gaming and daily needs - this will go above and beyond!

PROs: - Compact form factor saves or recovers desktop/shelf space for small offices or cramped TV/gaming rig set-ups - Not garish for a gaming rig (no glass windows or pulsing lights)--the brushed finish and green LED treatment on the power button and center "laser-slit" are kind of cool-looking - Increasingly rare these days, this rig actually allows you to watch DVDs and install non-digital games/software via its laptop-style drawer-fed DVDRW optical drive - Latest Ryzen 7 CPU and OS loaded on a snappy M.2 SSD makes for a smooth and incredibly responsive Windows experience (about 26 seconds from power-up to desktop) - Thankfully, there are limited pre-installed add-ons and bloatware; easy to manage and free up space on the somewhat cramped 128GB SSD - User-friendly HP Jumpstart hub provides quick access to basic usability tweaks and maintenance tasks--an ideal "starter" PC for someone unfamiliar with the Windows environment/customizations - Virtually silent in operation; the single RX 580 blower fan, single case exhaust fan, CPU fan, and small PSU fan actually make for limited noise even under load--I had forgotten what it was like to game in a quiet environment! - Onboard wireless means no need to purchase a USB adapter, internal wireless card, or hunt down an Ethernet cable to get this PC online - Plentiful I/O ports--the front includes 2 high-speed USB 3.1 and 1 USB-C port (cool!), a memory card reader, and a combo audio 3.5mm jack (for mic/headphone setups that only have a single cable connector); the back has separate mic and audio inputs and outputs, an Ethernet port, 2 USB 2.0 and 4 USB 3.1 ports, and the HDMI and DP ports on the Radeon RX 580 video card - Easily handles today's VR requirements--ran my Oculus apps (From Other Suns, Seeking Dawn, etc.) without any noticeable stuttering or slowdown - For grins, I used the included HP system restore utility to completely reset my PC after a few days of use...the process was straightforward and took almost exactly 1.5 hours of unattended re-installation time to return the PC to its original factory state; definitely reassuring to know that a catastrophic system recovery is possible with relatively little effort on my part CONs: - When it comes down to it...a gaming computer is pretty much all about the games. This one can run yesterday's games like a beast, but struggles to keep above 60 FPS with some of today's AAA titles at 1080p on settings above HIGH (see summary review findings below)...those looking to power ultra-wide monitors (1440p) or 4K for today/tomorrow's AAA titles should probably look elsewhere - Internal layout is efficient but there is VERY limited room for expansion or growth--only one open PCIe x1 slot for an expansion card down the road, and only a single open SATA port on the motherboard with an empty power connector means you only get room to add a single 3.5" HDD or 2.5" SSD sometime in the future - 16GB RAM is definitely plenty for Windows 10, Windows gaming, and most run-of-the-mill productivity and creativity software; but if you want to upgrade to 32GB (max the mobo will support) for more demanding tasks like video editing or working with massive databases, you'll need to replace both memory modules as there are only 2 slots for DDR4 RAM which are already occupied - Not really a drawback, but the green LED motif feels better suited to an NVIDIA-based PC. This is an AMD rig--"Team Red" is begging for a red LED array. And sure, the LEDs look fine, but there is no user control--no pulsing, breathing, or scanning (that last one would be cool)...a missed opportunity - The included optical scroll mouse is serviceable as is the chicklet-style non-adjustable keyboard, but the keys are very short with limited throw (think laptop); I will probably look for a cheap mechanical gaming keyboard. Neither keyboard nor mouse have LED lighting Summary review: Bottom line...this is a modest, relatively simple, definitely user-friendly, budget-oriented gaming PC. It is MORE than capable enough for home office or student use, but it also happens to be a pretty capable gaming rig, at least at reasonable detail/video settings in today's more demanding titles if displayed at 1080p. It will definitely handle an Oculus VR headset and you might even be able to push 1440p with some older titles at higher settings. Paired with a budget-friendly Freesync monitor, this system will provide for a smooth and pleasantly satisfying gaming experience, at least for games running from about this point backwards...see my (admittedly limited) sample performance benchmarks below for more on this front. I would characterize this system as a starter PC for casual gamers, or one for gamers on a budget who know precisely what their dollar is going to buy them...there are little to no enthusiast/advanced features, and little room for growth or expansion beyond an additional drive. Gaming potential/performance is already somewhat limited by the budget-friendly video card. In particular, this RX 580 is the 4GB variant with only 1 HDMI output--those looking to use this system for VR and gaming on a TV will need at least one DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter. The limited video RAM also reduces potential/capability to run games at resolutions much higher than 1920x1080 (i.e. 1080p). If you have a large catalog of older games and/or are gunning for a quality 1080p experience, you might not outgrow this system too quickly; otherwise, I would think more serious gamers might start getting frustrated with the performance limitations of the hardware within a year or two (despite the budget-friendly price today). I found no overclocking utilities for the CPU or RAM in either BIOS or via HP apps--only the overclock utilities already integrated in the AMD drivers for the Radeon video card will give you any room for incremental improvements in gaming performance. Ventilation is adequate with a side-panel vent and a single exhaust fan at the back but there are no open fan headers on the motherboard or places to put another fan inside the case...liquid cooling on the CPU will require a 120mm radiator replacing the rear exhaust fan. The Ryzen 7 is actually a very capable CPU but there is limited space in the compact case for a different video card down the road--by my measurements, there is only about 2" of additional space beyond the end of the existing RX 580 before you hit the inside of the component cage. For the curious, here's the hardware I found when I cracked open the case: - Sunflower mini ITX motherboard; inner cage has installation/attachment points for one additional 3 ½" HDD or a 2 ½" SSD - 1 open PCIe x1 slot; PCIe x16 occupied by the Radeon video card - 1 Samsung M.2 128GB SSD w/Windows OS loaded - 1 laptop style HLDS 16x DVDRW (I confirmed with a spare drive I had that you can swap this out for a laptop BD drive just by removing the plastic face-plate) - 1 WD Blue 1TB Hard Drive I tested this rig on an AOC Agon AG352UCG (3440x1440) & Dell S2319NX (1920x1080) monitor; performance given as (video/detail setting): average FPS, minimum FPS, maximum FPS Shadow of the Tomb Raider 3440x1440 (High): 34, 28, 53 1920x1080 (High): 64, 48, 110 1920x1080 (Highest): 54, 41, 94 Middle Earth: Shadow of War 3440x1440 (High): 24, 11, 80 1920x1080 (High): 76, 28, 193 1920x1080 (Ultra): 56, 20, 166 Assassin’s Creed Origins 3440x1440 (High): 34, 3, 66 1920x1080 (High): 55, 25, 81 1920x1080 (Very High): 52, 23, 77 1920x1080 (Ultra High): 47, 3, 79 Here are a few older titles just for comparison's sake: Tomb Raider (2013) 1920x1080 (Ultimate): 96, 43.8, 130 3440x1440 (Ultimate): 53.8, 42, 66 Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor 1920x1080 (Ultra): 88.76, 59.78, 131.98 For a "plug-and-play" gaming PC with respectable performance at HD resolutions on yesterday's and [probably most of] today's games, this rig might well fit the bill, especially if you're on a tight budget or perhaps buying this system for someone else. I personally find the lack of hardware expansion possibilities and performance customization options somewhat limiting. The Pavilion is a fine starter gaming PC for my youngest daughter, but it doesn't necessarily suit my own tastes or gaming expectations going forward. With a somewhat tepid assessment overall, I would personally have a hard time recommending this PC to anyone other than a casual or cash-strapped gamer; or more to the point, to someone whose gaming tastes won't grow much beyond where they are today and/or don't require the "everything to Ultra" settings in the most demanding games now and those to come.

Great PC - 2 changes made

I'll start by saying I love this PC. Performance is phenomenal. so fast. and multitasking is awesome. I use primarily for multimedia/graphic design work (Photoshop/Illustrator/video editing and conversion). Gaming works very well. more than enough RMA and video card more than ample. Cons: not thrilled with the laptop DVD drive/it's slow and well, it's the clunky fragile kind made for laptops. will still give 5 stars though. My set up is with a dual monitor set up (2x 23in HP Pavilion 23xw's) I also have a an HP external USB Floppy Drive (I have a Yamaha keyboard/piano that uses floppy) and I use a Logitech Z506 5.1 surround set up. --- 2 changes I had to make for this system (this is to help others avoid problems). - The Primary SSD hardrive is by far the fastest type of hard drive (NVMe M.2 SSD) and was great; however, the small 128GB size was not sufficient for someone like me who installs Adobe suite/etc. I upgraded to a Western Digital Black SN750 500GB NVMe M.2 SSD (up to 3470MB/s) (can get 500gb-1TB for around $100-$130 or so. It also increased performance/speed slightly and slightly noticeable faster boot up as well. set aside original as a back up. - sound: some will find this very helpful- PC has many ports even for video, but sound is where I found it lacked. It has 1 sound output jack on the rear for stereo only (virtual surround at best). No bueno. One might suppose to simply buy the latest Asus or Sound Blaster Sound blaster card as I did- I mean, it has an open PCI-e slot right? WRONG. it's physically there. you'll install the card. it will show the card hardware in Device Manger. it will not install software or function at all despite Windows even identifying it. It's listed, but not there. Listen carefully. The PCI-e slot is not to be used while you are using aNVMe M.2 SSD drive. It utilizes the PCI-e slot's pathway to function (part of why they are so fast verses standard SATA SSD's. so the slot is not functional. Workaround: press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to open Task Manager. scroll down to find Realtek Audio Manager. Right click it and select OPEN FILE LOCATION. Right click the same icon (now labeled as RtkNGUI64 app and create a shortcut for yourself (make life easier). open the audio manager. click on Listening Experience. then on Speaker Configuration. adjuster to your 5.1 set up (check mark Center, Subwoofer, Side Pair. Bottom shows Back Panel where colored ports are for Stereo out, Mic in, and Line in. plug your main stereo wire to the main port (green). then plug in the pink one your center/subwoofer, then the blue one side speakers. It automatically configures those input ports to now be out put ports. VIOLA!!! you have full surround sound. (Not as premium as a dedicated sound card, but it works just fine. - If you need a mic, buy a USB mic or headphone/mic set. If you still need a premium sound card, rest assured that the many USB 3 ports on the back of the PC will gladly take an external sound card, which will work just fine also.

Full disclosure, this is a review based on an insane sale price of $699! The value at this price is simply not possible to beat. If every component of this PC was purchased separately and built at home, it would have easily been a $900 build. That said, the computer runs quite well. Under a very heavy load playing games like Destiny 2 and Resident Evil 2 Remastered, it runs a very steady 60 FPS at max settings and 1080p. Additionally, while it is an air cooled system, it is actually fairly efficient running at about 79 celcius under max load. What I like most about the system is that it is INCREDIBLY quiet, even when running graphic intensive games. That said, the machine is NOT perfect. For starters, the case is somewhat small, and the components are crammed in. While there is some room to upgrade parts, it is minimal, so you will definitely need to check to see if you have the space before you buy a new card a few years down the road. Secondly, unless you plan on upgrading the cooling system, I would be VERY hesitant to overclock your processor/graphics card. Again, the cooling does ok when leaving everything as is, but I'm not sure it could handle the extra heat. Finally, the 400w power supply is ADEQUATE for what is in the machine, however, it definitely pushes the boundary of what is needed. The supply IS platinum rated however, which is great. All things considered, this is not a 4k machine, and is not marketed that way. If you are looking for a great mid tier gaming rig, and only care about playing at 1080p, then you should STRONGLY consider this PC, if you catch it on sale. At the normal price of $1049, it is an ok computer for sure, but with its faults, I would be hesitant to give it the full 5 stars. The breakdown here is this-on sale, buy it....not on sale-check all of your options, this included!

If you plan to use this PC as-is, it's a decent value. I bought it during a big sale, which brought it below what I could build it for, even if I chose cheapo parts. Will handle pretty much any current game at high settings. You won't be disappointed with performance. However, note the following caveats: 1) The graphics card is the 4gb variant. Not a huge impact now, but not as future-proof as the 8gb version of this same graphics card. 2) The case is very compact, which is good for space, but not so much for CPU and GPU temps. CPU/GPU temps exceed 85-90C under load, which is within specs, but not ideal for long-term durability of the parts. 3) HP uses proprietary parts for the motherboard and power supply. I bought this intending to transfer the parts to a bigger case with better airflow, but couldn't due to the parts. Should have known better. The motherboard has nonstandard mount holes and even has the front i/o ports built in (instead of headers). Power supply is only 400W and has a weird fan connector. Ended up buying a new motherboard (which of course meant a new copy of Windows) and a power supply. To be fair, HP doesn't advertise or intend for folks to do this, but wanted people to know just in case they had the same idea as me. Bottom line is that this PC is a good/fair value for folks who don't plan to tinker around with the parts. On sale, it's a borderline great value. It also runs hot under load, so depending on your intended use, you might want to consider a PC with better airflow.

This PC is a nice surprise! It can easily play most modern games at 1080p at high or better quality settings at 60 FPS. I used Gears of War 4's benchmark tool for some testing, and I was getting a rock solid 60 FPS at ultra settings, at 1080p. While Gears of War 4 isn't the newest game, it still is a visually impressive game. I was able to run it at 4k with around 30 FPS at ultra settings as well. With some tweaking, could probably get it to 60 FPS if you didn't mind turning down some visual features. The processor performed very well in every test I tried. The GPU may not be the greatest available, but it also performs very well. If you're not aiming for 4k gaming, this machine should be great. The price makes it very appealing as well. Pros: great price per performance, nice looking and not overly large tower, excellent processor, good graphics card Cons: not quite able to do 4k, but at this tier, this is an excellent machine

While looking into a new PC in store (as the idea of a prebuilt was more appealing to my parents), it was easy to look over this mini tower, especially as the only one on display was the version of this with AMD Ryzen 5. However, an employee helped me look up any deals for PCs with Ryzen 7 (as I planned to use it for both gaming and as a workstation) and this desktop appeared at a discount of $800, down from $1050. This was an incredible deal for the price considering the specs! I've still been getting used to the fact that I can run many programs at once (as I previously had a laptop from 2012/13 with 6 GB of RAM). I have been able to run many games at max settings (Rainbow Six Siege, Path of Exile, League of Legends, etc) without drops in performance. The main complaint about this PC from what I've seen has been that it heats up due to its poor cooling, but the most I've noticed has been some warming that is not much cause of concern. That is of course speaking on my behalf and how I utilize it. If you manage to get this on sale like I did, you will not be disappointed. Also note that the peripherals included inside are a chiclet keyboard and standard wired mouse with left, right, and middle click with the scroll wheel.

The worst, most sorry excuse for a gaming computer

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this computer back in 2017 as my first gaming computer. Ever since then I have regretted it severely. This computer has caused me nothing but problems and uses technology that is 10+ years old. You can go down to micro center and buy a computer that is futuristic compared to this ancient trash. So let’s begin with the problems. 1. It overheats non stop, there is only one tiny fan to get rid of all of the heat in the computer. I have had to open the side of it and put a desk fan in the opening to keep the overheating to a minimum. Running this computer with any game on even medium graphics nowadays will net you in the 80C temperature range (176F) and acts as a space heater for your entire room. With extended use this causes the computer to outright shut itself down if run for too long. Recently I have run into the problem where after running itself hard for too long it will randomly over stress itself and I need to tear it apart to diagnose what is wrong with it and fix it otherwise it becomes nothing more than a glorified browser opening computer. 2. The tiny space allowed for the components does not ally any form of Upgrades. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money to buy a bigger pc, if a part breaks or a better part comes out that will improve the performance it will be as simple as unplugging and plugging in the new part, in this one it’s so tiny that you would have to modify multiple parts and drill massive holes in the front for a part to even fit. I have had friends of mine look at the computer and they are absolutely baffled at how horrible it is. It uses technology that would be common for a high end gaming pc in 2007 and has the audacity to claim itself as a competitor to much better systems. In summary: This computer is the worst money can buy and will cause you nothing but problems and struggles. You are better off spending your money building a pc yourself or going to a dedicated computer store where they can supply you with a computer that will actually function as a computer

Ok, for starters, I am not a gamer. My idea of gaming Sim City or Bejeweled. However, I am a graphic designer and also occasionally design and maintain websites. I was using an old version of Photoshop (CS4) and finally desided to upgrade to Creative Cloud. Quickly, due to the demands of the program, my graphic work outpaced my existing computer, which was also have some hardware issues. There was a fantastic sale going on with this computer at the time I bought it, and I got lucky because there was an open-box one in my Best Buy store, reducing the price even more. This is the first computer I have purchased in over 10 years that I was dazzled by because it was SO much faster than my last one. My previous computer was over 6 years old, and even with an i7 processor, 12 GB of memory, and the replacement of the old HDD with an SSD, this new one can run circles around the old one. I think the M.2 SSD is the number-one hardware upgrade that truly makes it seem much faster. I was shocked when I took it out of the box just how small and lightweight this computer is. I'm used to monster-sized towers that that are quite heavy. Not this one. There is less depth from the front to the back on this computer, but don't think that limits your upgrade options. For those that are like me in that the first thing you do with a new computer, even before turning it on, is open it up and check out the inside, you'll be impressed. Unlike any other HP I've owned, and almost all of my computers since my first XP have been HP's, the wires on the inside are neat and organized. With the smaller form-factor, this is great because it allows for more airflow. There is a little disassembly necessary to do any upgrades, including accessing the memory modules, but there are some great videos on the internet to show you exactly how to get in. If you are wanting to upgrade the video card from the RX580 that is included, be aware that this form-factor will limit you a bit because of the physical size of the type of card it will accommodate. Overall, this computer is sleek, fast, and I personally feel that I would have been willing to pay a lot more for it, making me even more happy about the purchase. I recommend this computer if you are wanting a more powerful desktop tower and also want it upgradable, as this one definitely is.

Got this computer as a replacement for my aging XEON desktop. Didn't use for gaming but did video encoding. As delivered the system was clearly not performing as well as it could. I tried uninstalling the add-on stuff from HP and it made a slight improvement but it still wasn't quite there. I then did a complete new install of W10 using an image downloaded from Microsoft. This made a real difference. Boot was faster and no more random laggy response. I also pulled the hard drive and replaced it with a 1TB SSD and upgraded the system drive to a 500GB SSD. This system is now very quiet, extremely fast, and can easily handle any video encodes I throw at it.

This is not a top notch KYA gaming rig. But, for casual gamers that don't need 120fps, this is great. It gets better performance numbers than my i7 (older). One of my gripes is that I wish the video card came with 8GB RAM. I will most likely upgrade this in a year or so. Another is the internal drive bay's are limited as well. You don't get the expansion as other cases. My last one is that it didn't come with a Blu-ray/DVD drive. It's a DVD-RW only. All this being said, I got it for an awesome price when it was on sale, then BB did a price match on it just a few days later. So, it was well worth it for the price.

Got this for Black Friday. Can’t beat it at that price. Gotta be careful of GPU temp under full load. Small and quiet. Good value and runs very smoothly. On sale, can’t beat price!

I really like this pc. I always buy HP and this is the best I have had. It is so quiet and sets-up in about 15 to 20 seconds. It seems to accept all the programs I have put in and finds all devices quickly. I am happy with it. I think it was too expensive, over $1000. Of course it was on sale before I bought it and right after I bought it. I guess that's just life in general. The size is fantastic also.

I'm not a gamer...yet! I bought this computer for my nee desktop setup as I am starting an online degree program. My sons who ARE gamers thought it delivered the best bang for the buck. So far I am extremely happy with the computer. It is quick, snappy and the small form factor works great on my desk. I am using a 32 inch 1080P TCL Roku TV for a monitor which also has been a great surprise...nice setup for the money!!!!

I have wanted a new PC for a while, I just don’t have time to build one right now. This came along on sale for $699, I got it all setup to an Asus 24inch monitor, so far it looks and performs outstanding. It seems fairly locked down to upgrading but I just wanted something that would work out of the box and this fits that bill. It’s silent when turned in until I turn on a graphic intense game and then you just hear the fans turn on.
