I'm in the minority of people who don't enjoy this film. I don't entirely understand why people enjoy it, yes it's got striking visuals and a few charming characters with an intriguing premise to hold your attention. But for me I couldn't stand some of the characters in the film that just annoyed me from start to finish, the whole film at times also felt like there were just plot holes left and right, and it became a mess that I ultimately didn't care about. If it peaks your interest enough you may enjoy it more than I did, my tastes are different than yours.

    A children's film gem

To answer another reviewer's bafflement at not liking Hugo: Sometimes people just don't get a certain film. And these folks clearly did not. The fact that this was an overwhelming critics' darling (93% on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer; that's among major film critics) says something. It's rare to encounter a kids' film so intelligent and thoughtful as Hugo.Hugo the orphan lives alone secretly inside a great Paris train terminal and constantly has to evade the station policeman, who would throw him in an orphanage. He tries to rebuild the automaton that his dead father found. He discovers that an old man with a shop in the station is far more than he seems, while befriending the old man's granddaughter. In the process he finds his new family and brings the bitter old man back to wonderful life. The other reviewer finds the movie dull, which is baffling. There's plenty of adventure here and more than enough action. The characters are lovingly drawn. There is no pandering to viewers--kids or adults. The eye candy that Scorcese has created is terrific (think your most colorful, nostalgic image of 1930s Paris and you're there). The 3D effect is on a par with Avatar--utterly supportive of the story, but never distracting or cheapening. Can I guarantee you'll love Hugo? Obviously not, to judge by that other review. But anyone who loves great kids' films and the history of cinema (a very vital element of the movie) ought to see it.

An enjoyable foray into movie magic

It's a neat trick, to make a feel-good movie that doesn't cater to the lowest common denominator through overt sentimentality and schmaltz. Leave it to Martin Scorsese, known primarily for his hyper-violent blasts of cinematic brutality, to put smiles on our faces by dazzling us with a masterful exploration of why we love the movies. On its surface, "Hugo" is about an orphaned boy who lives at a train station. In most other "family films," hijinks - usually in the form of slapstick humor and crude jokes - would ensue. Scorcese's film, though, takes a left-hand turn, developing instead into a love letter to early cinema and one of its real-life innovators. The surface story's still there to be told, of course: the boy yearns for a family, and may yet find one following his dalliance with a female peer. And slapstick does indeed ensue. But here's where the cast works its own sort of magic. Sacha Baron Cohen is the closest thing "Hugo" has to a villain, and is put through the ringer in said slapstick style, but he plays the character subtly enough to be ultimately endearing (and, of course, redeemed by the film's conclusion). The younger actors, Asa Butterfield and Chloe Moretz, are wonderful and really carry the picture from start to finish. But who can compete with Ben Kingsley when he's as "on" as he is here? Just a great, winning performance that will leave you wanting to jump up and cheer by its culmination. Top to bottom, "Hugo" is a joy to watch, and it looks fantastic on Blu-ray.

Scorcese is an absolute genius. This movie is intended for children and adults alike and is masterfully directed and acted with visuals that take your breath away and a musical score that you will be humming the rest of the day. Movie and cinema lovers will feel chills throughout this film that, in my opinion, is Scorceses homage to his life long passion. The storyline is flawless and flows the entire time, seamlessly, keeping you interested at every moment and every scene. It's a film about films and I loved it. I don't normally leave reviews for blurays I've purchased on this site but the first entry was so far gone about how truly amazing this movie is that I had to leave a 5 star review for anyone thinking about purchasing it.

I saw this in the theatres 3 TIMES when it was released. Truly a magical journey. The storyline is very interesting, and the use of 3D is not superfluous. It truly adds to the wonder that this film exudes. I would honestly say, that this is the BEST use of 3D since Avatar. A definite movie to add to your collection, I will revisit this one time and again. Film buffs will love the subject matter.
