    Beware!

Bought this as an upgrade from the $79 HyperDrive hub (which felt fragile) and both are not subtitle for the price tag. USB ports disconnect frequently and for high power usb the ports would not even work. This can not handle connecting multiple hard drives and disconnects all the time. The HDMI cable has issues at varies occasions making my screen glitch or turn off. I recently purchased the Belkin hub and have ran all my accessories smoothly with no issues. I highly recommend spending the extra $10 and going with something that will work and last. Many of these hyper drives are coming out defective and do not meet expectations. I had high expectations for this sleek design and highly praised product but it’s pretty trash for what you’re paying.

    Buy Apple's instead

I don't suggest buying this port hub. For the amount you pay, you might as well buy the one on Apple's site. When I plug mine in, it won't stay on. I have to wiggle it and get it just right for it to stay on (for the laptop to read that it's plugged in). If I move ever so slightly it turns off. Mine might even be made wrong because I have to insert my camera card in upside down. And it's actually hard to insert it, like I have to use more force than I would think. I also have a case for my MacBook and I can't plug this hub into the laptop unless the bottom part of the case is taken off. It's just a huge pain in the rear!

    Brand New & Broken

I really really wanted this product to work. Apple decided to do away with all the crucial ports needed in the everyday work environment. This product did not work straight out of the box. Really regret buying this product AND the new MacBook Pro. Should've switched to a different brand.

This product match my computer and well looked very sleek when I ran it. Well come to find out that it ate my Micro SD card and it was common knowledge that these did this after going back into the amazon reviews so be aware. Dont use a micro SD or it will never come back! you will have to take it apart, but only to find out it scratch the tabs so bad that it is unusable....

    Good for including basic capabilities

I absolutely love Mac computers and I bought my uncle the newest version of the Pro. I included this item since all the USB and HDMI ports were not include in the actual laptop. There is a limit though to what you can attach and run based off of the required energy or voltage output. Given that all computers other than this newest version of Mac laptops have these features, having to buy an additional device for the price it is, that will only work for a certain amount of accessories, is frustrating. It does work well with the accessories it DOES run, and it looks nice and matches the color of laptops available. It connects well to the laptop and doesn't feel flimsy like it will fall off. It seems to be good quality. But despite that, because of it's size, it only includes one of each type of port. It does what is says, for which I'd recommend it to others.

    Perfect for me

I was going to get just the SD card reader for my new Macbook Pro, the sales rep told I would get a better deal getting this device, as it has 2 USB 3.0, 2 USB-C thunderbolt, 1 SD card reader and 1 Micro SD card reader. That convinced me. Took it home, plugged it in, and it worked right away. One customer stated in his review it was flimsy and easily disconnect, I cannot confirm that, I snaps in tight, and a light in the front shows when it connects. No complaints here.,

    Expensive paperweight

I believe I saw another review that said it perfectly. This looks great but does not really work. You are essentially buying nice paperwight. We contacted j5 for support because we could not charge our computer nor connect a hard drive using the device. These are the exact words from their rep. When asking about connecting an external hard drive: "Unfortunately our devices are not meant to support high capacity and high power devices such as hard drives or smart phones. This device was not meant to charge other devices." When asking about connecting the computers power cord: "Unfortunately no, this device does not support power delivery." So, what we are left with is a very expensive memory card reader and when it is plugged in we cannot charge the computer nor connect our hard drive. The support personnel suggested we could connect a mouse or keyboard using this device. Another issue that we have had is that once the device is plugged in if you bump the computer or shift it in any way it disconnects from the computer. It is very sensitive. The design is also very uncomfortable how it hangs off of the side of the computer. I would suggest getting one that is connected by cable instead of this direct plug-in design. I would absolutely under no circumstances purchase this again nor recommend it to anyone. Look for another device that will support something actually being plugged into it.

With nothing attached, causes excessive heat

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I like having extra ports but when I plug this item into my15" 2016 touchbar MacBook Pro, the cooling fan starts almost immediately at a low level that increases to medium distracting level in just a few minutes. This happens when nothing is plugged into the hub(except power cable). When hub is removed, fans become silent. This is predictable and repeatable. I'd prefer to have several cables hanging from my machine than to hear the fans on constantly.

Great concept, but quality control is lacking

I recently purchased the 2017 MBP and as everyone knows it's all USB-C. After reading mostly good reviews for this product I decided to go this route rather than buying new cables. For $100, you'd hope the quality control was better. It doesn't matter what USB cable I plug into the adapter it won't recognize the device unless the plug is only partially plugged in... it's odd! I'm gonna exchange it and see if it's just one that snuck through QC.

Amazing! Better than the ones at apple!

Before I found this, I bought the dongles at apple's website and I was very disappointed with their quality. The fit on the USB was very very tight, and it ended up getting stuck. I got a new one, but that one didn't even pick up that I had a mouse connected. I knew there had to be something better, and this is much much better. The price is a good price for the item that you're getting and everything works really well so far.

Tried 2 and both were horribly defective

I'd give it zero stars if I could. The first one the slot for the SD card was so crooked the card couldn't fit in at all. They exchanged that for another that was mailed to me they were out, this one the stems that connect it to the laptop itself were just a hair off and it wouldn't fit into the computer. So far haven't been able to use my computer with a usb for what we got it for and I have had it 2 weeks now. Going again to try for another usb hub of another nature and hope it will work. Sad mac got rid of the usb and disc burners in the computer itself I know times are changing some of us still use this stuff on a regular basis.

    Failing after 2 months

This USB C ports on this thing are both not working after limited use over 2 months time. I needed to use a standard usb, usb C, and an HDMI cable at the same time through this HyperDrive while charging and running an audio interface with the other 2 usb C ports on the other side of my macbook. Sadly I'll have to either purchase another one of these and hope for better results or find another solution.

    Garbage

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I'm a pretty big Apple advocate having made the full jump in 2013 by switching over my personal and business computing needs to MacBook Pro. I just got another new MacBook Pro today, and was forced to get a Hyperdrive Hub given the fact Apple has mono lined their plugs. My $100 Hyperdrive was dead out of the box. It fit looser than a king size bedsheet on a hamster. Completely frustrating, especially given the fact you're obligate to purchase a hub with the new MacBooks. Even more frustrating when you're trying to set up your new Mac with your peripheral devices that require USB or thunderbolt ports. They are obviously cheaply mass made, and at a pharmaceutical price point given they are required equipment. Total Garbage.

Comes unplugged too easy doesn't work at all if you have a case; So I'm supposed to take off the case every time its used; Tried that too; Still comes unplugged too easy; I could also see closing the lid & bending the plugs; So I guess you buy a $3800 laptop & then have to buy CD Drive, SD card & USB adapters, What happened, I guess blue tooth will be connected to our brain & wireless charging will get rid of all the plugs!!!

While the HyperDrive looks great, it does not fit securely inside of the laptop and flexes in every direction. As a result, it often disconnects. This causes issues with external displays, hard drives, USB devices, etc. After installing, everything worked well for 14 days. After that, my external monitor kept disconnecting and flickering. Unless you plan on gluing it in place, this device is not recommended.
