Grinch who
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So I bought this movie for my nephews and when they went to watch it, someone had put the wrong Grinch movie in the container. It was the grinch with Jim Carrey instead. I love both movies but would of liked to have gotten what I paid for.

I don't like this very much. Meh
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was underwhelmed. My five year old though, she seemed to REALLY enjoy it. I prefer the one with Jim Carrey! I'll give this another shot, as I OWN it. LOL. Also, I collect 3D movies and it has NICE 3D technology in it.

Wrong item in the case
||Posted . Owned for 5 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I SEARCHED everywhere for this movie for my nephews for Christmas and when I FINALLY found it, they opened it up to watch it and the wrong movie was inside the case. I was super disappointed. It took me forever to find and they only had this one left at the location I shopped at.

||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have never seen this movie. Bought this as a gift and it came in looking like someone from the warehouse stomped on it before they packaged it. Sad to say this is far from the first time I have been in this situation.

Not nearly as bad as it could have been.

"I know what to do; I'm going to steal their Christmas!" The gist of this version: A happy middle ground between the original classic short and the Jim Carrey live action romp. So I wonder if Universal will be following in line on this trend Disney has been doing of remaking its movies from animation to live action, but in this case just in reverse. Based on the trailer I had no interest in seeing this, but my nephews were super excited to check it out so off we went. It could be best described as a completely inoffensive remake, that follows the basic story beats but is filled with enough side and back story to fill a feature run time. But to be honest if I want to watch the Grinch I would prefer to see the original classic, and if I was in the mood for a puncher version I would go with the over the top Ron Howard take on it. It was all just so pleasant, which I expect from people of Whoville, but not the Grinch whose meanness just consists of being rudely smug because he is annoyed. Benedict Cumberbatch was 'fine' in the role, but I don't think he did anything special to stand out. There were a few amusing jokes along the way, but I can't say I really remember any of them. Finally, this being from a major digital animation studio (Illumination), the visuals were all solid but on the soft side. One bit of animation that did stand out for me was that great looking textures in the snow when the Grinch slid into some, and sat up and had plenty of the white fluffy stuff piled on his head. I prefer the photorealistic textures Pixar has in their films, but I suppose sticking with this softer look is what makes Illumination's features unique. Overall this new Grinch did not bring anything new to the classic character, but kids will enjoy it. So at the very least it will encourage a new generation of kiddos to want to check out the classic Dr. Seuss book and holiday special, which I think is a win!

You're a bad one, Mr. Grinch
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the third attempt at bringing Dr. Seuss’s beloved Christmas tale to the screen, and it’s the first that I can definitively say is a bad one. Its heart’s an empty hole. The filmmakers’ brains are full of spiders, and there’s garlic in its soul. But it’s Illumination Entertainment, the makers of the yellow cancer that is the Minions, and the studio that botched its last attempt at Dr. Seuss, so I wasn’t expecting much. Still, this version of the biggest king of Christmas grouch this side of Charles Dickens leaves much to desired, namely the other two versions. In fact, with both the original cartoon and the Jim Carrey live-action movie, this latest version has literally no reason to exist. It offers nothing new, significantly different, innovative, or even funny enough to justify its own existence. However, that is not to say that it is completely devoid of anything good. Just not enough good to make it worth remaking a classic. I did get a few laughs out of this movie, particularly in the beginning. This movie did do a few things that the other two did not. This movie contains the most “how” of any How the Grinch Stole Christmas, showing in great detail the logistics and execution of the Grinch’s plans and his gadgets, but it ultimately just comes across as unnecessary filler. And for what it’s worth, the soundtrack does include the Whos singing some traditionally Christian Christmas carols. Now, does this imply that in this movie’s world there was a Who-Jesus born of a Who-virgin who died for their Who-sins? I don’t know, but that does give this film a point in going against the modern grain. But despite all of that, everything else that this film attempts with the classic Grinch story doesn’t live up to its predecessors or is just flat-out bad. Benedict Cumberbatch portrays a Grinch that is somewhat underplayed and boring. He’s not mean enough to be cartoonishly threatening or menacing, and isn’t excitable enough to be funny or expressive. Furthermore, his backstory and reason for being a grump as actually worse and doesn’t justify his demeanor to the audience. The original cartoon and book were short enough to not need to dwell on motivation, and the live-action movie did at least give some attempt at emotional justification for the Grinch, but here, he just comes across as an unsympathetic jerk. In the Carrey movie, the Grinch was hated and feared by the Whos, so he had a reason to hate them back, and the way he was treated as an outcast in his childhood provided a reasonable justification of this isolation and the eccentricities he developed in that isolation. Here, every Who down in Whoville likes the Grinch just fine, as they are aware of him and are just as friendly to him as everyone else, and his childhood was a touch lonely but not ostracized or bullied like in the other one, so he has no justifiable reason for being a jerk. In fact, his closest neighbor, played by Kenan Thompson, constantly invites him to parties and the like; he’s arguably a touch overly friendly, but not enough to warrant the unabashed disdain the Grinch has for him. If you are going to pad out the story to fill a full-length movie with backstory, at least make sure that backstory justifies the present characters. Other characters don’t add anything of value either. The kid doing Cindy-Lou’s voice is just fine, but the writers don’t give her much to work with, and she just seems like an average kid, as opposed to a smart and kind kid mature beyond her years in the live-action film. There is a newish element introduced in that she wants to help her single mother (what happened to her father, whether her mom is divorced or widowed, is never addressed), but not much is done with it. A new reindeer character is introduced, but nothing really funny is done with him before the plot summarily dismisses him, making him utterly pointless and just to fill more time. Too much of this movie has that vibe. The live-action film didn’t feel like this, as every scene did move the new plot along, established something about the characters, or was at least funny and entertaining, and the cartoon cut right to the chase and only included minimal but serviceable slapstick. Again, this movie fails to justify its own existence. Furthermore, the narrator is terribly underwhelming and unsuited for this material. I guess that does make him fit in with the rest of the movie, but that’s not a good thing. He sounded way too young, modern, and just all-around too into the zeitgeist destined to be dated shortly. The narrator for story that is supposed to be as timeless and emotional resonate as the Grinch should likewise sound wizened and kind but still important. Boris Karloff and Sir Anthony Hopkins did this masterfully, and would be tough acts for anyone to follow. I remember sitting in the theater thinking to myself that this narrator was so terrible, boring, and uninterested, he sounds like Pharrell Williams. And lo and behold, during the credits I saw that I was right. I did not like being right in this instance. And another thing. There was no rendition of the classic song “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” Or if there was, it was so bland and forgettable that I don’t remember there ever being one, in the opening or closing credits or the film proper. Either way, that’s still a mortal sin for a Grinch film. Overall, this film is at best barely passable. On its own in a vacuum, it’s not the worst thing, and would be a marginally adequate adaptation of the classic Dr. Seuss masterpiece. But since there already are two far superior versions of this same story in both animated and live-action formats that already exist and are widely available and popular, this version is just pointless. I don’t necessarily regret seeing it, but I definitely don’t recommend it, and I certainly will not be seeing it again. If I want to watch the Grinch, I’ll turn to the classic 1966 TV special or the hilarious 2000 Jim Carrey movie, and you should too. Those two versions are and will remain Christmas staples for generations to come. This new movie will assuredly not stick around for more than a season. Final grade: D
