    Geek Squad Did Great Work on Data Backup

    I was told it could take up to 2 days to transfer my data to the new laptop...they were done in about 3 hours. It was wonderful

    the data transfer got interrupted somehow and my documents and pdfs from 7/25/2013 through present did not copy to the new computer, so I had to do that by myself

    Geek Squad Home Service Fiasco!

    We purchased two new HP CPUs, Windows 11 Pro, and Geek services to install the Windows 11 Pro on each of the new CPUs at our Green Bay, WI store. Due to the fact that we have a large number of photos on each of the CPUs we were replacing, we also bought Geek data transfer services for each new unit. We brought the new HP CPUs to our home and we were told Geek Home services would come to our home on a date out about three weeks. On the day before our Geek services were to arrive, we were informed that there were no Geek service techs available and we were given a new service date that took us out two additional weeks. On July 10th, the day our service was to begin we were called by the tech to tell us that our original purchase for the CPUs and the Geek services was incorrect and that we would need to pay more money and that if we could not afford or were unwilling to pay the extra amounts now being quoted, the tech would not come to our home. After agreeing to the higher charges, thinking there had been an honest mistake, we agreed to have the tech come to our home and to pay the additional costs. After arriving at 10:00 AM the tech began working on the installation of the Windows 11 Pro and data transfer from our existing CPUs to the new HP CPUs. To cut to the chase, after 9 hours of work in our home, the Windows 11 installation appeared complete but the data transfer was a mess. The tech had moved our photos and files to the cloud and they showed up in multiple places on our CPUs and not in any order. Many files did not transfer and some that did could not be opened. Remember these are just pictures and mostly Word files. In addition, my wife could not connect to her printer or scanner. Notices that we had exceeded our allotted cloud space began appearing and the files we could see could not be accessed or modified at all. Before leaving our tech told us again that we had still not paid enough and we would need to be charged for additional services and an accessory data storage unit. We were also informed that this was our tech's first home visit without other Geek Squad members being present. To say this was a worst-case experience would not be an exaggeration. Within an hour of our tech's departure at 7;00 PM that night, we were able to reestablish my wife's connection to her printer and scanner and we then waited for our first opportunity to have another Geek Squad member come to our home to essentially start the data transfer over again. Fortunately, we had backed up all our pictures and files on thumb drives just for this kind of incident and we could still function. By starting again with our old CPUs our tech, Justin, was able to begin the data transfer process again and after about five hours both my wife and I had our pictures and files moved from the old CPUs to the new HP units. All our data was retrieved from the cloud and it would all fit onto the new CPUs. I did ultimately purchase an accessory storage unit to have storage capacity for years to come. Justin left around 3:00 PM with a promise to call the next day to ensure all went well with the Windows install and the data transfer. After Justin left, we found that my wife was once again unable to connect to her printer or scanner. After calling it a day she was able to reconnect the following morning on her own. It is now about two weeks later and Justin's promised call never came. Fortunately, we have sorted out the issues we were left with on our own and our system seems to be operating properly now. After paying more than $600 in Geek services and living with the issues listed above, we have never had any further contact from those at the Green Bay Best Buy where we purchased the HP CPUs and the software or the Kohler, WI Best Buy from where the Geek Squad was headquartered. While Justin did a good job of getting us back to something close to normal, I would be very cautious in using Geek Squad home services and more to the point, I would ask about the experience of any Geek Home Squad member who might be sent to your home. By the way, the phone numbers we were provided to use for questions or concerns connect only to an off-shore phone bank and they were not only unaware of our issues but could not give us the contact information for those in Green Bay or Kohler who may have been able to assist. We learned a costly lesson about in home Geek services and to this day, no one from either Green Bay or Kohler has ever reached out to us.
