The door latch is a pain; it makes opening the door difficult. The control panel is not backlit, making it challenging to see in low lighting.

My 12-year-old GE microwave has started acting up. It rattles like something inside is loose, and the turntable works, but makes a clunking sound. I was really dreading having to replace it because it looks built-in. It’s actually just sitting on a shelf in the cabinetry and has a stainless-steel bezel to give it a built-in look. I removed it and measured it, and went looking for a replacement that would fit.
I found this Insignia microwave oven that is the exact size I needed. I ordered it, and sure enough, it’s a perfect fit. But that’s not the best thing about this microwave. First of all, it’s very quiet. Even when my existing microwave was not making its odd sounds, its normal operating volume level was fairly loud. This Insignia microwave is near silent in comparison. The turntable is totally silent.
The controls are easy to use and very intuitive. I like the one-touch operation of being able to press and number from 1 through 6 and have it start and run for than many minutes. A single touch of the “Start” button runs a quick 30-second cycle, and each additional press adds another 30 seconds to any cycle. The buttons are responsive and clearly labeled. Plus being flat, they are very easy to clean. The LED display is large, bright and easy to read.
The 1.6 cubit foot size is perfect for my needs. It holds most anything I need to cook. With 1400 watts, it’s powerful and cooks quickly. I was able to bring 1 cup of water to a rolling boil in well under a minute. The sensor cook works very well. I’ve been able to perfectly cook every plate of leftovers with its “Reheat” mode. Defrosting works well, too. I have absolutely no complaints about the cooking capabilities of this microwave.
I only have two minor complaints, and they are really insignificant and did not affect my overall rating. First of all, to open the door, you have to press a small interlock “trigger” inside the handle. I didn’t realize this and thought the door was stuck. I guess this is some sort of child safety feature, but it’s the first microwave I’ve used in decades that didn’t just open by pulling on the handle. Like IO said, it’s a minor issue, and I have quickly become accustomed to pulling on the trigger to open the door. My other issue is that the turntable does not have an off button. If it’s in place, it rotates when the oven is on. Sometimes I’ve needed to cook some odd-sized plates that I don’t want to rotate as they will hit the front or back of the inside, so I am used to switching off the turntable. Again, this is a minor complaint, and I rarely need to use this missing function, so I don’t count off because of it.
Overall, this is a great microwave. It has decent capacity and power in medium-compact package. It’s easy to use and cooks very well. It also looks sleek and modern. This is a great value for a microwave oven and I highly recommend it.

It's a Good and Powerful (Wattage) Microwave

This is a very good looking microwave, aesthetic-wise. I would consider this medium size (my previous microwave was bigger). Although I consider it medium, it is a good interior size. You can put regular-sized plates inside. You're not putting in a 9x13 casserole dish (and you shouldn't expect to), but there is space in there. A few other things about the physical looks/parts of this microwave: The handle has a lever on the top that you have to push up in order to then pull the handle towards you to open the microwave door. It's weird and unnecessary, but it's there. I would prefer it not there, but I got used to hit very quickly. I would still prefer it not present. Another big thing, and one of the reasons I knocked off one star is that the keypad is not backlit. I walk into my kitchen in the dark a lot (just because I just do) and I went to grab popcorn and when I put it in, I said, "oh." I had to guess, but I knew where the 30 second button was kind of located, so I went for it and hit the right button. Yay for me. But I wish the keyboard would light up, at least at the point of pushing one button; but it doesn't.
Okay, the microwave. I truly thought this was an 1100 watt microwave (which is my ideal microwave), but it is more powerful... either 1200 or 1400 watts. Good grief! That is way more than I bargained for. But it is what it is. If you are like me and know about microwaves and the wattage power's effect on doing what it does, then you know; and just beware.
The microwave does the basics of what it's supposed to do -- warms, defrosts. You can hit "Time" and put your own amount of time to microwave. You can hit "Power" and adjust the power that the microwave uses for whatever you have in there (100% power, 20% power, etc). You can express cook by simply hitting one of the digits of 1 - 6 and it will give you that many minutes off the bat... the microwave just starts (example: hit the 1 button and it will run for 1 minute; hit the 6 button and it will run for 6 minutes; etc.). You can use one of the presets. I tested the defrost with veggies (that is the only thing I was willing to test because food is expensive). It did the job. I did melting butter as well as soften butter (those are both important for me). It did the job. But THEE most important thing for me...
POPCORN! So this was a struggle and the other reason for knocking off one star. I buy the mini popcorns packs (rhymes with bore-dill-bed-and-soccer). I hit popcorn 3x to go to the 1.5 setting (you can hit once for 3 and then twice for 1.75; those numbers relate to the size of the popcorn bag). I let it run until the end on purpose. It severely burnt my popcorn. I did what I used to do and hit the 30 seconds button 3x (for 1.5 minutes) and paid attention. It still burnt my popcorn even though it was still popping some. I am still testing this out, but I am thinking the microwave is too powerful for microwaved popcorn. Annoying.
If you don't microwave a lot of popcorn on a regular/daily basis, it's a good microwave and I recommend it. I went into detail about the popcorn because I eat it all the time so it is the #1 thing I need a microwave to do right.
Peace.
