The gears are actually plastic and not designed to do the amount of shredding described in the directions. The product only lasted 6 months before it died. I only use it to shred my daily mail, so I expected it to last much longer.

My old one cut the paper into 3/4" strips and this one cuts them down to about an 1/8" (good luck pasting those back together). For the price I feel is was a very good deal.
