Well, it can, if you want to spend a solid 5-10 minutes slowly and I mean SLOWLY moving the AirPods in a circle until the light turns on. But if you so much as breathe too hard it will stop charging it.

Also make sure to use the wall plug in and not a multi usb outlet that will split the power running to it. If you do use a multi usb outlet, it will charge very slowly or not at all.
