Turns out it takes a somewhat regular power connection, which I temporarily fixed by borrowing one of our hard drive's power cables, but I obviously needed a permanent fix. This one from Best Buy has been running it for a few months now. I only needed the one bit from it, but I'm glad they had it in the store, and at a pretty good price too. The sales guy was awesome and opened it for me so we could compare and be pretty sure it would work. Their return policy is awesome, so even if it didn't end up working, I wouldn't have been out.

an universal adapter is a great idea

The adapter to my security camera, for some reason, was not working. I believe that the wires came apart at the end of the plug. I went to Staples but they didn't have anything. I had stopped at Stables because it was on the way to Best Buy & I needed this item. I was leaving no stone unturned. All I can say is thank goodness Best Buy was just down the road from Staples. They had what I needed. Next time I will just head straight to Best Buy. The employees were very helpful & got me what I needed.
