    Caught fire! Dangerous!

Dangerous! We were making a bag of popcorn when the microwave made a piercing alarm sound I’d never heard before. It started smoking. A computerized voice repeated FIRE FIRE intermittently with the alarm. I was able to unplug it and remove the bag—which was not burned. The inside panel of the microwave had bubbled and caught fire! Charred black. A chemical burn smell and smoke filled my house setting off other alarms. These should be recalled!

When it comes to buying a microwave there are so many options and it can be hard to choose the right one. I believe the insignia retro compact microwave is the perfect option for a few types of people. This is the perfect microwave for college, apartment, and maybe even camping. Starting off with the design, the retro look and feel makes this microwave add style to your kitchen. The mint color is a perfect match to many other appliances such kitchen aid mixers and Keurig coffee makers. The door has a built-in locking function that requires you to press a button to open it. One thing that shocked me was that it included a glass turntable. This helps heat your food evenly and is not something I have typically seen in smaller microwaves. One of the best things about it is the size and weight. It is small and very lightweight. This makes it the perfect microwave for a dorm, a smaller apartment, or even a camper. Although it is small and compact, it is plenty big enough to heat and cook meals. With 700 watts of power, it is both power conservative but also has enough power to heat food fast. It has multiple presets for your cooking and heating needs. It also has a defrost function if you need to defrost meat. Overall, this is the perfect compact microwave. I love the retro style and the modern features. We have a small camper that does not have a microwave, and that is where this will be used. Thankfully, due to its small size, it is the perfect microwave to keep in our camper with us. I believe this is the prefect microwave for anyone in college, or living in a small apartment.

The Insignia .7 cubic foot compact microwave is the perfect size for so many things. The size allows it to fit on smaller tables and counter tops and the retro style and the color make it an attractive addition to a small apartment or smaller kitchen. The power level on this microwave is rated at 700 watts. That seems to be the normal range for these types of compact microwaves. The controls are easy to use and figure out. One button allows you to select the power level, another toggle between the clock and the timer. There is a also a defrost button along with a stop/cancel and start buttons. The larger knob at the bottom allows you to increase cooking time, adjust weights and scroll through the menu. One cool thing about this compact microwave is the built in auto menus. You can select one of nine auto modes to cook or heat a number of different foods. The chart for the auto cooking settings is located inside the door at the bottom like on many other larger microwave. The Insignia has a rotating cooking dish that will accommodate a full size plate. There are some plastic parts, like the door latches that only time will tell how well they hold up to use. These plastic parts are the only reason I gave this unit a 4 star rating instead of 5. The performance is really good for a 700 watt microwave. If space is important to you and the retro styling is down your ally, this unit may be perfect fit for you. My wife loves it and has big plans to use it in her classroom at school. I'm sure you can find plenty of ways to use this microwave if you give it a shot.

Looking for a smaller scale Microwave for my less than ideal counterspace, I didn't want anything overly large, plus I wanted to outfit my kitchen with unique devices, that stood out. the retro design of this microwave is great and really helps to make my kitchen area unique. The mint color adds an additional pop in color to my kitchen, and the vintage look is stylish. It's the perfect blend of old-school meets modern functionality. The .7 Cu. Ft. size is ideal for my small counter spaces and it fits perfectly on my counter without taking up too much space, yet it’s roomy enough to handle most of my cooking and reheating needs and doesnt crowd the other appliances. The 700 watts of power are sufficient for quick heating and cooking, reheating leftovers, frozen meals, all with great results. The food heats evenly and I am finding that it works well for my needs. The simplicity of the controls. The dial and buttons are easy to understand and use, making it straightforward to set the cooking time and power level. The timer and alert system work so I always know when my food is ready and I am not waiting too long for even cooking or reheating. The noise level compared to other microwaves I've used is quieter. Overall, I highly recommend this device, it’s a perfect addition to my kitchen, looks great but also delivers and is similar quality to other Insignia branded products.

The Insignia .7 cubic foot compact microwave has a cool retro design. Mine is in a very pale mint color with a retro oval window. The oven is 700 watts and has a rotating carousel. The carousel and cooking cavity are large enough for my standard dinner plate sized microwave safe plates. There are 9 preset cooking programs, each with 2 or 3 options to adjust for size. The presets are: popcorn; beverage; fresh vegetable; meat; pizza; potato; pasta; soup and reheat. There are 10 power levels. My first use was a bag of popcorn. The instructions recommend folding the corners of the bag inward in triangles. While I thought this was strange, I soon saw the reason. Being a compact oven, the corners of the popcorn bag begin to rub against the walls of the oven as the bag expands. I had to stop the cooking and re-center the bag twice (as the instructions directed) during the popping. The preset time for my size bag worked perfectly and there were only a few unpopped kernels. So far, I've also reheated pizza, pasta, and soup and defrosted frozen hamburger meat and all worked as expected. About the only other thing I do with a microwave is make bean and cheese nachos. This compact microwave works perfectly and is very cool looking.

Best little old school microwave on the market.

This microwave was very eye catching. The first thing I noticed about this microwave was the color. I chose to go with the mint green because it was very retro. One thing about this microwave is that it is very small. It seems as though you can fit a small cup of coffee or a plate in this to warm things up but that is about it. You cannot fit large cups in this because it is too large. One of the things I like about this microwave is the old school dial. Sometimes you get these microwaves and they have so many settings that you don't really know how to work them, with this, you just have to turn the dial. There is not really much power to this microwave but it really packs a punch for as small as it is. Another feature is you can mute the beep on the microwave. When you have small children or even infants, you just lay them down for a nap and you go to heat yourself up something to eat, you can do this without waking up anyone. This is good for kids that are going away to collage or in any little cafe room in your house. You can't go wrong with this microwave.

It is hard to get excited about a microwave, but the retro style, mint color, and easy operation is enough to change that. At .7 cubic feet it is the perfect size for a sorm room, an office, or a small apartment. I live in a duplex with a small kitchen, and I love that this little microwave doesnt take up too much room on my counter while still providing plenty of power for most cooking and reheating tasks. The retro theme is carried not only in the color, but in the operation. The dial-based timer is a throwback to one of my first microwaves, and I did have tonread the instructions to figure out how to set the different modes and power levels. Once i got it figured out, it was easy to use. I used it to bake potatoes, 90 second rice bags, steam bags of frozen vegetables, reheat leftovers, and microwave bagged popcorn. I also defrosted chicken breasts and it did take a bit longer than my old microwave. Operation is quiet, so I dont have to worry about disturbing anyone is the apartment when I'm up late. This little unit gives reliable performance and looks great doing it.

Good Value Enhanced by Retro Styling

SIZE: Gone are the days when a microwave took up half a counter. Even in a large kitchen, since reheating foods is the main job of a microwave, this microwave more than suffices. The compact size of the Insignia™ - .7 Cu. Ft. Retro Compact Microwave makes it perfect for small kitchens/kitchenettes, or even a bedroom for guests to enjoy the luxury of heating water for tea or popping corn. STYLE: I like the mildly retro cuteness, thanks to the color, style of handle and rounded window. It adds a bit of cheeriness to an often drab-looking appliance. INSTRUCTIONS: Since I’m not quad-lingual, I especially appreciate not having to page through a manual the size of the Yellow Pages to find instructions in English. What a novel idea: printing separate manuals in a variety of languages! Somebody cared enough to extend this courtesy to the customer, and I am grateful not to have to store a manual, three-fourths of which is not needed. EASE OF USE: I was initially put off by the two-step “press and open” style handle. I’m just lazy or impatient enough to want a one-step process, but I understand the value the two-step may have where young children (or smart cats) are present. Everything else is pretty straight-forward for general reheating. I’m not crazy about the “A-1, A-2…” auto menus. I will never memorize the modes 1-6, i.e. A-1 for popcorn, A-4 for meat, A-8 for soup, and I sure as heck won’t pull the manual out to check. I wish the display screen stated something like “A-1 POP… A-2 BEV” Etc. I suppose if I used it for cooking rather than reheating, I might memorize the numbers, but—well, nah— just ain’t happenin’. The glass turn-table is a bit wonky—I kind of struggled to get it centered on the turn-table ring, and either I’m extra clumsy or it’s poorly designed, as it derails easily. Could be me, but I think a more exacting fit would help. PERFORMANCE: It’s quieter than most microwaves, some of which sound like space-ships maneuvering a landing. I thought the 700-wattage might be a problem, but I don’t perceive any significant difference with the lower wattage. A 12 0z. Mammoth-sized russet potato took 9 minutes to “bake” in this microwave. I’m not a fast-food chef, so the rest of the meal won’t be ready before then anyway, and it did a good job. I also tested the defrost by pretty much stuffing an overly-large amount of frozen chicken breasts into the microwave and following directions, found it did a good job defrosting without cooking the chicken despite me “disobeying” the laws of the size-limit police. This is a good value for a compact microwave. It’s made even better by the refreshing retro style. I deducted one star for lack of visuals on the menu/display screen.

This microwave is just absolutely awesome. The packaging the microwave came in, was undamaged and packed away that I don’t suspect that the microwave would come damaged unless Someone really went out of their way. Opening the box was pretty straightforward. Instructions were located on the top and microwave was easy to pull out. It was a little heavier than I anticipated but it is still easy as a one person job. Setting this microwave up was easy. It was just plug-in play you use the dial on the front to set things and it’s ready to go. I’ve use this now for a few weeks and I can tell you it works well quickly enough to handle most things. This microwave is fairly compact and doesn’t take up a lot of valuable countertop space. Looks on this microwave are good as it gives a fun retro look and the color really pops, in a good way, compared to other appliances that are often stainless or black. I would highly recommend this to anyone needing a microwave that doesn’t take a lot of space and can still get most things done

This is an adorable little retro design and overall works fine. For the size of it, it is probably fairly standard for having some oddities since there isn't much room to put additional buttons. The clock setting was not intuitive but after reading it once I have been able to remember how to reset it if necessary. If you use the 30 second button and just keep hitting it until you reach your desired time that is straight forward. It has preset settings for things like popcorn and such as most do. The issue with the presents it that it just shows A1, A2 and so on which doesn't tell you much, so you either need to keep the list handy or memorize it. I guess if you tend to use a specific preset often you would remember it. It does recommend to fold the corners of the bag when trying to pop popcorn so it doesn't get stuck and prohibit it from spinning, this gives you an idea of how small it is. This is great for an office or dorm room since it doesn't take up much room and is cute. There is a button in the handle to open it that people don't see and keep trying to yank it open.

It works and it’s cute and small. Those are the pros. Cons… the preset buttons suck and there’s not an easy way to operate it except hit the quick start multiple times to keep adding 30 seconds. There are no numbers and you can’t just dial by the minute. You choose A-1 through A-9 and then it wants to know the weight. It’s not good. It’s doable. It takes a long time to cook. For instance if the package says 2 minutes- it will need at least 3. Lastly, it’s got a child proof button in the handle you must press in order to open the door. You get what you pay for.
