The gel covers ensure the airpods stay in his ears throughout the day and the string makes it easy for him to pop out an airpod to around his neck if he needs to speak with someone.

The optional strap is handy if you are running or need to remove the AirPods momentarily when you are out and about. It eliminates setting them down randomly and forgetting them.
