I know the adapter was the issue, because I was able to connect my laptop to a monitor directly with the same HDMI cable I tried to use with this adapter.

(I used it once before I left on a business trip. and now it fails) ie don't buy this stuff from Best Buy.. at least amazon has a decent warranty and policy of returns, and u pay half.

I found that the connecting wires had to be at a very certain angle to make sure it worked consistently otherwise it would cause flickering on the monitor.

Not sure why, but the one I purchased wouldn't pass any signal out to the display at all nor would the Nvidia driver on my Windows 10 system even recognize that any device at all was attached. However, when I returned it and replaced it with the Insignia Display Port to HDMI cable instead it worked perfect on the first try, easy plug-and-play then with no issues at all.

Multiple attempts at troubleshooting wouldn't solve the display issues which included a doubled screen output and very small display. I ended up returning it and buying something cheaper on Amazon that worked immediately.
