Nice ice maker for daily use, or party time!

All lanai-styled party spaces need an ice maker – keeping the heat & bugs out is priority #1! Or, if you don’t have a water line to your fridge, this can be a life saver. TL;DR for my frequent readers and details below. Good: Footprint Speed Reuses melted cubes to make more ice Quiet during making ice Bad: No Hook for scoop Only one ice type Meh: Ice doesn’t break on fall, takes force Cleaning regiment Loud when the ice drops Overall, this is a great unit to either supplement your ice, or to have as a dedicated ‘party’ ice maker, because let’s be serious - that kitchen can be pretty far away. For things like this, I like to follow the instructions to the letter, so I did. Easy to understand & explains the need for cleaning after X amount of usage or X amount of time. While I don’t ever have to clean my fridge ice maker, I found this a bit … meh. Wrapped in a blue film to prevent scratching, this stainless appliance is sharp looking with an exhaust fan that looks just like a PC tower fan and once running is surprisingly quiet. For accessories, there isn’t much other than a scooper. My main complaint with the scooper is there’s no place for it to live. Not a side cup to drop it into & no hook (or hole in the handle) to latch it on so it doesn’t get misplaced. I’m thinking of modifying the scooper & applying a 3M hook to the side to take care of this complaint. Onto the main reason for this: making ice. For the first run of the maker, like any ice maker - is a ‘dump’ run; run it to get the ice & then throw it away as it probably has some new-machine flavor to it. I used this run to time & photograph the process and it was pretty cool to watch. After filling up the tank to the “fill” line, it was powered on and off it went. A tube with holes drops water to the top, where it runs down to fill the square and the run-off hits the flap and goes back in so no water is wasted. After roughly 15 minutes of watching the cubes form from the water dripping, resembling how icicles are made, all sides of the cubes start to shift (likely from a bit of heat around the edges) and BAM, they hit the tray quite loudly. When it hits the tray, it’s either the whole 24 cube rectangle, or maybe two, twelve cube bricks. Since that won’t work for most purposes, I had to locate the scooper that I had already misplaced & proceed to bang away to break up the cubes. While I was unable to get 24 individual cubes, they were still formed in a way that was easy to add to a glass. I’ve seen other ice makers that offer ‘different sizes’ or styles of ice cubes, but this isn’t one of them. If this matters to you, then unfortunately you need to rule this one out. Overall, this is a great unit - albeit my first ice maker, I have no major concerns with its usage or longevity. Recommended!

    Efficient and User-Friendly Ice Maker

Setup and Ease of Use: Setting up the ice maker was a breeze. The instructions provided were clear and concise, allowing me to have it up and running in no time. The control panel is intuitive, with straightforward buttons and indicators that make it incredibly user-friendly. Even those who are not tech-savvy will find it a breeze to operate. Ice Production Speed: One of the standout features of this ice maker is its remarkable speed in producing ice. Within minutes of turning it on, I had a fresh batch of ice cubes ready to use. This is a huge advantage when hosting parties or gatherings, as it ensures a constant supply of ice for beverages without any significant wait times. The machine consistently delivers ice quickly, never failing to meet my demands. Water Dispenser Capacity: I was pleasantly surprised by the generous water dispenser capacity of this ice maker. It holds a sufficient amount of water, enabling the production of a decent quantity of ice cubes without the need for frequent refills. This feature is particularly beneficial for those who require large amounts of ice regularly, saving time and effort in maintaining a steady supply. Sleek and Compact Design: The ice maker's sleek and compact design is another commendable aspect. It blends seamlessly into my kitchen decor, occupying minimal space on the countertop. The stainless steel exterior not only adds an elegant touch but also ensures durability and easy maintenance. Room for Improvement: Despite the many positive aspects, there is one minor flaw that I have noticed. It lacks a designated area to hang the ice scoop. While this may seem like a small issue, it would have been convenient to have a dedicated spot to store the scoop when not in use. However, this can easily be resolved by finding an alternative storage solution nearby. In conclusion, I highly recommend this ice maker for its impressive performance, ease of use, and speedy ice production. Its user-friendly interface makes it a perfect choice for individuals of all ages and technological expertise. With its sleek design and ample water dispenser capacity, it caters to the needs of ice enthusiasts without occupying excessive space. Although the absence of a designated scoop hanging area is a minor inconvenience, it should not overshadow the ice maker's overall excellence.

Easy To Use, Fast, Creates Sheets of Cubes

This unit can make a lot of ice in a short amount of time. After filling up the water reservoir and starting the process, it usually makes its first batch of ice in about 15 to 20 minutes. Afterwards, the following batches take less time, anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes. These times are based on the default ice size. After about 5 or 6 batches, the bin reaches max capacity, and the machine pauses the ice making process until the bin is emptied. One thing I noticed is that the machine does not power itself down after the bin is full. It waits for the bin to be emptied and replaced, then the process automatically continues. Also, the screen never fully turns off unless it is unplugged. It’s kind of like a coffee maker; the screen will remain on until the power cord is unplugged from the wall. I really like how much ice is produced at once. However, the ice comes out as a sheet of cubes all connected in a 3 by 8 grid. Meaning it makes 24 cubes, but they’re all connected when it drops into the bin. In order to break them up into individual cubes, a hard object like a knife or pic will need to be used. It’s not hard to do this step, but unfortunately, it’s necessary if you want individual cubes. I even tried decreasing the cube size by reducing the amount of time necessary to make each sheet, but even then, I couldn’t get it to make individual cubes. For me this is not an issue. I simply dump the ice from the bin into a bowl and use a knife to break the sheet up. I did notice that once the bin is full, the sheets hardly melt while sitting in the machine. For example, I’ll begin the ice making process before I go to bed. When I wake up the next morning, the sheets are all still there and have only melted a small amount. I find this very convenient because I don’t have to attend to it immediately after the bin gets full. Of course, this result can very depending on room temperature. The unit is portable in the sense that it can be picked up and moved. I believe it weighs about 22 pounds. However, keep in mind of its footprint (14 by 10 inches) if you have limited counter space. It’s nice that it’s self-cleaning. But unfortunately, the plastic plug used to drain the water is flimsy and hard to grip. It’s located under the machine and it’s difficult to pull out. I wish it was easier to drain the unit. Overall, I am happy with this ice maker. After my refrigerator’s ice maker died a year ago, I’ve been buying ice at the grocery store. Now, I no longer need to. Also, this unit is very useful when I need to fill up my ice chest. I can run it the day before in order to get all the ice I need to fill it up. Again, I appreciate not needing to run to the store to buy bags of ice.

    Great Portable Icemaker for parties

This portable icemaker makes clear ice cubes in minutes after startup which is very impressive. We recently had daughter’s birthday party and this machine was able to produce the much-needed ice cubes for the party. We put the machine to test as soon as it arrived by unboxing it. Setup was fairly very simple. Just remove the plastic tapes from the unit and fill the reservoir with purified water to the top mark line and switch the power on. It took around 20 minutes for the first batch to produce the first set of ice cubes. This machine does make ice cube in 8*3 cube sheets hey tend to come out in an 8 cube x 3 cube sheet which you'll probably have to break apart. (24 cubes) and sometimes it breaks apart during fall and it depends on the thickness of the ice. You have an option to set the thickness of ice by pressing the + or – when making ice and if your ice is thick its little difficult to break the sheets to get the cubes. It looks great with its stainless-steel smooth finish on the countertop. It does not take much space and it sits next to my espresso machine. The removable basket can hold up to 2.5 pounds and this machine can make produce 44 pounds of ice per day if enough water supply and the produced ice cubes are removed periodically. This machine has auto shut off feature and will stop producing ice if the ice tray is full or if the water level is low. It is recommended to run a full cleaning cycle during setup by draining the water and making few ice batches and discarding it. There is a drain plug at the bottom which needs to be pulled to drain the water for cleaning. This machine weighs around 22 pounds and measures 14.6 X 9.9 X 14 inches. Overall, nice little icemaker that makes clear ice quickly with its 3.2 liters of water and is great for home get togethers/parties without the need to purchase from stores. Highly recommend to anyone looking to add portable ice maker for quick ice making at home.

Insignia 44lb Portable Clear Ice Maker

Funny story, this is my 2nd Ice maker in the last 6 years. We have a great refrigerator that we purchased in 2007. In 2012, the ice maker failed on it. It was not covered in the warranty and when the repairman came out to see about replacing it, what it was doing was not in the functionality of the actual ice maker, the issue seemed to be in the electronic panel in the door. That part alone was going to be almost $700 to replace so we began to look at alternatives. We settled on a counter top Ice maker and would make ice for a day and a half, storing them in gallon zip lock bags and then store them in our standalone outside freezer. That has worked well for 10 years. I began to look for a newer model because the older one was a bit slow. We settled on the Insignia because the price point was good, it could make 44lbs in a day and it also was clear, small squared ice cubes which was supposed to not melt as fast and keep drinks colder. The ice is different than what I had before. This is basically 24 smaller squares. I did the increase on the size to the max and they are still less than 1inx1in. squares. They come out in a rectangular sheet that stack. I did notice that sometimes when they drop, they will not drop directly flat which means if your not paying attention, it will stop until you empty the ice. As I said, I like to make ice to use ahead of time. I do understand some folks buy these to use for parties. I really think that is fine but if it was me, I would make ahead of time and put into gallon zip lock bags and store in freezer or cooler before a party or event. Before starting, you should let this thing sit for at least 4 hours to let the refrigerant settle and there is a self cleaning you need to run as well. Additionally, we threw out the first couple drops just to make sure we were getting clean ice. This thing is pretty fast, less than 18 min to first drop and then that decreases slightly. They claim it drops about every 14min, I think we hit that once the unit had fun for a bit. I can fill up a gallon ziplock in about 1.25 bins which took a less than an hour and a half. We ran it for more than half the day and gathered at least 5-6 gallon bags full. That was more than 20lbs of ice so I have no doubt you could get 44 in a day. The challenge would be keeping the reservoir full overnight and dumping the ice. Again, that 44lbs is for reference. We like the speed of this unit and know if we are going to need ice, we just need to start in time to get a half day of it in. You can use normal tap water but we prefer to use our water filter pitcher to filter the water first as this greatly improves ice flavor and ensures no tap water smells. This also helps to keep the ice clear. Overall we are very pleased with this new version of our ice maker, and don’t really miss the one in the fridge at all. We keep an ice bin and scoop in the freezer and just dump a bag into it as needed. Sure beats paying to replace those finicky refrigerator ice makers ! I would recommend this ! It looks great on the counter when out with the Stainless Steel. It’s about 15in tall, 10in wide and probably 15in deep as well.

Never taught very thoroughly about having an ice machine how helpful can it be. But i am glad i've got this Insignia on hands now! Been very helpful for small gatherings/party even tough i have my fridge that produces ice this comes in handy due to it's portability. I used it on my patio and my garage and i'm planing taking it with me camping. It's very easy and intuitive to boot it up..... and it produced iced little faster then advertised at about 6 min. a block. Got to say i added cold water. While it's capacity of making ice it's at around 44lbs in a day... it only stores 2.6lbs at the time but like i said u can transfer it and it's pretty quick at producing fresh new cubes which by the way they come out very clear and medium size i would say just perfect. It has AutoShot off for when the bin fills up and i found it to be pretty quiet. The screen offers a bunch of information about that status of the machine like how many minutes left till the sheet of ice it's ready etc. Like i said i'm glad to have one it's been useful already bunch of time and i can see myself using it even more in the future... oh and i almost forgot to mention the stainless steel finish makes it look nice wherever you might put it!

Insignia is at it again with another home gadget, this time an ice maker. Portable ice makers have become a popular accessory, either in a home that doesn’t have an ice maker in a fridge, or for entertaining, allowing for a ready supply of ice on demand. This unit is a good size, it is not overly bulky, with an attractive stainless steel cover. It does have several holes for ventilation and a fan, which are essential as this unit actually has a compressor based refrigeration system instead of a solid state electric cooler. Set up is pretty simple, put some water in, run a cleaning cycle, and it is ready to go. Insignia claims it can make up to 44lb of ice in 24 hours, which would not surprise me, it makes ice very quickly. This machine does not create the “nugget” style ice that is popular at some fast food restaurants, but instead uses a “waterfall” system to create cubes of ice. It is somewhat noisy, running at 57db. I used filtered softened water and the ice that came out had almost no taste, which is good for using in drinks. The cubes last a long while and a great for making cocktails or putting into warm glasses of soda. It is very fast, filling the bin in about an hour and a half, and each cycle (about 12-14 min) creates enough ice for about two standard 16oz glasses. If started up before a party, it should be able to keep up with demand if the bin is full and the water reservoir topped off from time to time. Ice that slowly melts in the bin is recycled as water to make more ice, which is handy. It also does not need any proprietary cleaning solutions or filters, which is nice to not be locked into a continual cycle of buying consumables. As mentioned, the ice maker is pretty loud. It also tends to produce full sheets of ice, instead of individual cubes, which is my biggest issue with it. Unless you set the ice to the thinnest setting, which makes hollowed out cubes that melt quickly, it creates sheets of cubes with a thick (about 1/8”) solid back between the cubes. This means you have to break them apart, something the included plastic scoop is barely capable of. As the ice slowly melts in the bin area, it also tends to form into large blocks. The fill lid is also on the top of the unit, meaning it has to be pulled out from under any cabinets to fill it. After cleaning or to drain the reservoir, it needs to be plugged in to power and have the bottom clear to a bucket or sink to pull a plug and drain the ice maker. It’s an awkward and messy procedure. Cleaning has to be done every 40 hours of run time, which can be as little as about 3 days to a week. Overall, this machine is affordable for the amount of ice it produces and the ice is fairly clear and clean tasting. But the solid sheets and high maintenance needs, along with the noise, really hold it back from being a must have.

I love this ice machine! It makes ice so quickly- literally in about 10-15 minutes it is churning out cubes. It sets up quickly and does not take up much room on my counter (I was worried about how big it would be). You plug it in, add water to the top (about 14 cups give or take) and then hit the power button. The display tells you that it is starting. The cubes it makes are what I would call "soft". My daughter has a chronic illness and spends too much time in hospitals and calls this "hospital ice". She loves it because it's easy to chew but it holds it's shape nicely. The unit will tell you when the bin is full and will go into a holding mode. It will keep the ice cold until needed. As soon as you take some out, it will continue to make more! My refrigerator has an automatic ice maker that has been nothing but problems for several years. It does not make much ice at all and I am always needing more. This machine is a perfect addition to my kitchen. I now have enough ice for any occasion! It will keep churning cubes out as long as you keep refilling the reservoir when it gets empty. It is small enough that you could bring it to a party and have plenty of ice all night long.

This ice machine is great for the price. It takes up about the same counterspace as an instapot or airfryer or big toaster oven. It does put out a lot of sound when it’s operating. The machine also expels a lot of warm air when running. Note that you need to be diligent with keeping it clean, as you should run the cleaning cycle every three days or so, and deeper clean with lemon water every month. I have noticed sediment of some kind collect at the bottom of the machine—perhaps minerals from the water. My observations were that it takes a few times before the ice becomes clear. Dump the fresh ice into zip loc bags and store in freezer for best results. It took a week or two of use before the plastic smell dissipated. I would run the wash cycle twice and consider discarding the first few batches of ice. Anyhow…I recommend the machine! It is also fun to experiment with ice cube size.

This machine makes fantastic clear ice. I don’t keep any ice in the refrigerator as I don’t use it often enough and it dries and wilt down to a very cloudy ice cube. This little machine makes ice within 16 minutes. And keeps on going if need be. It’s a very big little machine. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a portable ice cube maker.

An easy 4 stars, maybe 4.5. This machine works great. The ice is nice and clear when you use purified water. It is not super quiet, but not crazy loud, and its an ice machine sooo...totally within my expectations. I like to run it while doing the dishes and making dinner. Ice does come out in a sheet, so I keep a mini hammer in the junk drawer. Ice comes out, goes directly to ice bucket in freezer, and gets a few taps with the hammer to break it up. Super easy, and much preferred ti hauling bag after bag of ice home from the store.

I have been wanting one of these for 10 years but always waited because I was leary of them. I cant tell ppl just how happy that I bought this very one. I would not have been happy with any other ice machine. Only thing is i think amazon might have this exact same machine but where you can put a 3 gallon jug on top. Definitely wish this had that. I have been using it every day for about 4 months now. What I do is use reverse osmosis water. I fill up my 2 5 gallon jugs for a dollar each a quarter block away. I have a fairly easy way of filling the machine up. I transfer the water to a 1.5 gallon water piture which i keep in the fridge. This way i can always easily fill the ice machine and have good drinking water. Guys do not ever use city water in one of these or a humidifier you will destroy them plus the water will be nasty. All the cons ive heard about sonic ice machines having major issues after less than a year. Id leave that ice for when u go to circle k trust me you dont want that. And actually this ice is super fun to chew on and it really is such a wonderful machine. You can make the ice bigger or smaller i always set mine on level 5.
