Powers up laptop but does not charge it

I accidently lost my power cable for my work computer and needed to do some work over the weekend. I had brought the laptop with me to the store, so with help of the customer service desk we could try out the connectors included. One of them fit my laptop perfectly, so I bought it. When I got it home, I immediately plug it in and could boot up my computer. Unfortunately I immediately got an error message that the computer did not recognize the power source, it could not charge the lap top that by now the batteries were dead. I took the charging cable back and once again the customer service desk immediately processed my return after I explained the issue to them.
