Works GREAT WITH MY USB 3.0 HUB

Buy the correct adapter for your laptop.

This C to A is the first one I bought this because the HDMI port on my chromebook was damaged. I bought another adapter that plugged into my usb port and had a HDMI port on the other end. but I returened it because it was not compatible with a chromebook. I searched on line for one that specifically worked with a chromebook and allowed it to mirror its screen to my TV via HDMI cable. The last one--a miniHD usb to 2 HDMI-- was much more expensive but worked great and was a lot less expensive than a new HDMI Port. Bottom line: Make sure you buy not only the correct adapter but one that will work with the type of laptop you own.
