Fist off, i bought this by chance when I got an email from Best Buy and saw that it was only $19.99.. I had $15 of BB credit points, so this cost me $5.50 with tax. I bought it to replace the clunky Bose wave Radio/CD that's been on my nightstand for over 10 years. The alarm feature works great! I can get weather, traffic, etc...just by asking. This will also control my Sony Android TV down stairs. I'm definitely getting another one. They're currently $40 (reg..$99). That's still a great deal!

Excellent Speaker & Assistant! Life changer!

I love this thing. I normally don't post reviews but I had to! I bought this a few months ago and it works amazing. I love that its' an assistant that tells you the time and most importantly it DISPLAYS IT! Most assistants are only a speaker and you have to talk to them to get results back instead of just looking at it. Not with this! I use this every night to listen to Spotify, one of my favorite things is you just say "Hey Google, play x playlist or x song." I usually play a playlist called "Atmospheric Calm" on Spotify at bedtime and then I say "Hey Google, stop playing in 35 minutes" or "Hey Google, sleep in 35 minutes" where it will actually stop playing in 35 minutes, by then I'm fast asleep and the speaker stops playing. THIS WAS A GAME CHANGER. I no longer watch TV to get to sleep, I listen to calming music and it automatically cuts itself off by the time I kick into deep sleep. All lights out and eyes closed with relaxing beats. You can also do "Hey Google, shuffle" and it will start shuffling a playlist or your music starting the next song. ONE DOWNSIDE: The "Alarm" sound on this thing really is too quiet and relaxing. It uses the volume you have the device set at to play the alarm and there is no way to make the alarm play at 100% volume like any android or Apple (iOS) Device would. Before my sleep schedule was fixed I was not being woken up by this thing and was late to work a couple times. Very embarrassing. "Hey supervisor, my new alarm isn't good enough to wake me up", yeah, not fun.. SOLUTION TO DOWNSIDE: Instead of using the default alarm, what I will do is "Hey Google, SET A MUSIC ALARM." it will ask what time and what to play, I'll say something like "9 AM, ACDC" and it will play ACDC loud, just make sure that you set your volume up a bit. THe music even at like 60 volume will wake me up with certain songs but the default alarm sound is really weak and calming where it will not wake a medium/heavy sleeper up. OVERALL: For the money this is a very high quality speaker that puts out good sound up close. Once you get into bigger rooms and jack the volume up you will start to hear some distortion and also some "dulling" of notes or tangy highs and muffled lows.

Useful Home Assistant with Some Minor Limitations

Overall, this speaker with Google Voice Assistant works very well. Just like on an Android phone, you simply say, "OK Google" and begin asking any question you have. The female voice assistant will either give you an exact answer or perform a Google search and read the primary result back to you. For example, if you ask Google, "OK Google, what time does Disneyland open tomorrow?" She will tell you the exact operating hours for Disneyland for the requested day. But if you ask, "OK Google, at what age should my child stop sucking his thumb?" Google will respond by reading you an answer from a reputable website. The Voice Assistant also performs very well when asked to turn on or off my WiFi connected house lights. A few of my lights are connected using TP-Link light switches, and others are connected using WeMo light switches. If your lights are not already setup in the Google Assistant app, you are guided during the speaker setup to add them to the Home Control portion of the app. Adding them allows you to control your lights and other connected devices, (Nest Thermostat, Roomba, WiFi outlets, etc.) using your voice either through your phone or through the Insignia speaker. Since the speaker is setup on my nightstand, my wife loves to ask Google to turn off the bedroom light, instead of having to get out of bed to physically turn it off. A few limitations include not being able to manually adjust the time displayed on the front of the device. Other users have inquired about this option and Insignia's tech support has responded in forums that they are not able to change the time because the device syncs with Google time servers. Hopefully someday there will be an option to manually adjust the time, so if you're like me, you can set the clock ahead a few minutes to help with getting out the door early. Another limitation is the device's inability to place phone calls yet. When you ask Google to call someone, it responds that the feature is not currently active. Hopefully this feature will also be added in future software updates. And the final limitation is the speaker quality (not really though). If you're very particular about the sound quality of the music being played through your speakers, then this unit will not satisfy you. However, if you just want to enjoy music without concern for high quality sound, then this speaker will do just fine. The sound it does produce is good enough and can get loud if you crank it up. The bass isn't all that strong, but again, this is not a device meant for an audiophile. It will meet the needs of most people. Ultimately, I am very satisfied with this speaker. It's a reasonably priced speaker and home assistant. It's perfect for a bedroom night stand or living room clock (or anywhere else you can plug in this unit). If Insignia continues to update the features on this speaker, it will easily get a 5-star rating. Still, if I could give it 4.5 stars, I would.

    Great Surprise! Highly Recommend!

I currently own both the Google Home and Google Home Mini, and was looking to add another Mini when I came across the Insignia with Google Assistant. I was hesitant to purchase this device at first because while I love my Google Home and Home Mini, there are still some minor bugs/missing voice commands and I did not expect the Insignia version to work just as good, if not better than the Google devices. However, the alarm clock and white noise features are what sold me, so I bought it and brought it home. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised! Not only does it work like the Google devices but seems to hear and understand my voice commands better than the Home and Mini. I don't have to shout at it or rephrase my questions a million times to get an answer. It has charging ports and I love the white noise feature, but wish the duration was more than 1 hour. Overall, very satisfied with this purchase and looking to add a few more! Highly recommend!

Great if you can get it for $25

I bought this speaker for $25 figuring for that price to get a decent speaker, clock and assistant in my bedroom I can't go wrong especially when Google Home Minis are usually around $35-50. I originally had a Echo Dot in my room and never owned a Google Home device. I will say that set-up is super easy. I have an iPhone and I had the Google Home app (I have a few Chromecast devices) and it recognized it immediately and turned on the time and then began an update that took just a few minutes. After that I was ready to go. I tried playing one of my Spotify playlists. Didn't work. It started playing a random playlist with a similar name. If I ask for a specific artist, album or song though it played just fine. The playlist issue seems to be a Google Home issues as well, not specific to this device. I will say though, for a small speaker the sound isn't bad. It also isn't great. It won't compare to a Sonos or other high end speaker. For $25 it sounds amazing. For $100, you'd be better off spending the extra $50 and getting the Sonos Play One and connecting a Echo Dot to it or Sonos One for an extra $100. It works great for bedroom audio and while it gets plenty loud, I wouldn't necessarily use it for a party. There is bass, but hardly any deep bass. The mids and lows sound ok but can get muddled. Again for $25 it's great for listening in the bedroom. I even set my Chromecast Audio back up on my speaker bar in my family room and now using the Home Group I can stream music to both my Insignia speaker and my Chromecast Audio at the same time giving me a multi-room option, which I do love. My only drawbacks to this device are the Spotify playlist issue (which seems to be a Google issue) and that when the alarm clock goes off, even when you stop the audio tone of the alarm, the clock on the front continues to flash and I have found no ways of stopping this. Hoping I can find a fix or with a firmware update because that kills the whole alarm clock functionality for me. I will say, in regards to Spotify playlists, my Echo dot plays my personal playlists with no issues. Not sure why Google can't, but hopefully this gets fixed with updates. My other complaint (again this is with Google and not Insignia) is that Google Home devices do not work with SiriusXM and my Echo Dot does. Again, could be fixed in the future with updates. Ultimately, for $25 you can't go wrong. You get a decent sounding speaker, a Google Assistant device and a clock all wrapped in one. Sure the alarm flashing sucks, but overall it's not a bad package. Hopefully with updates my complaints can be fixed. I would totally buy this again for $25, but for the original price of $100 it's not really worth it. Even at $50 it's questionable, but probably worth it.

The clock and temp features are what sold me. The sound quality is excellent for the size - not tinny sounding, good spectral coverage. Provides the functionality of the official Google Home product. Minor complaint - it seems to support only one Google account. Excellent price at $50 on sale. Have never been disappointed with Insignia products. Will buy another for sure.

    Average Sound Quality, Cool Features

I am split between two universes: Google and Amazon. I am struggling to figure out which one is best and deserves to be my personal assistant, but the "Insignia™ - Voice™ Smart Bluetooth Speaker and Alarm Clock with the Google Assistant built in" (you'd think they could come up with a more friendly, catchy name) is pushing me in the Google direction. The device itself is average. As others have mentioned, you can't make calls on it yet. It also isn't the most robust sounding speaker on the market. Nor does it come with a battery of any kind which is odd because whose to say you might not want to take it to the backyard, or into the basement or garage for awhile as an internet music player? I cannot speak to any of the technical glitches others have had. I have not experienced any problems. The midrange sounds are clear and the volume levels are good across the range from quiet to loud. I personally think it launches at just the right level of volume. The assistant voice is clear. The assistant's microphone is pretty good. So far it has successfully picked up my voice without issue. Currently I have this model in the office about 5 feet away and it picks up my commands without me feeling like I am shouting. The dimmable screen is a plus as well as the mute microphone and USB charging port on the back. Not sure how to make the temperature stay on the screen all the time. I got this unit initially as a radio alarm clock replacement and at night phone charger. It met those needs just fine, until I realized I didn't know the proper command(s) to make it wake me to music nor would it wake me if the power went out. That short-coming resulted in moving it from the bedroom to the office. The Google Assistant features seem more intuitive to me than say, Alexa, but I've also lived in the Google world for a lot longer. It is nice to say "Hey Google, tell me about my day" and have it run through my calendar, give me traffic info, tell me about the weather and then start playing the news for me first thing in the morning. When I want a little background music: "Hey Google, stream some Q101" or "Hey Google, shuffle my Pearl Jam mix." Google just seems to get me better than the other assistants and the commands feel very natural but it does take time to learn all the different commands. There is no way to cover all the commands and interconnectivity of the Google Home enabled devices like this one, but so far it has been a joy to incorporate this little device into my daily lifestyle--and to explore how Google Assistant can *improve* my life. Don't buy this device thinking you are getting an awesome speaker. Buy this device because you want you want an inexpensive, Google personal assistant device that has average sound, decent volume and fun features (minus phone calls...for now). Good choice for a beginner who already has a history via their Google account...and it won't break the bank. My lack of stars are primarily due to the average audio quality, the lack of a battery, and the inability (currently) to place/answer a call.

Great bedroom alarm speaker with Google Voice

This is a great sounding stereo speaker that I use in my bedroom as an alarm clock. The Google voice functionality lets me control what music it plays quickly and easily, and I can control the various other smart devices in my house with it like lights and the TV. I can also get the news and answer questions quickly. The sound quality is great, I love that this is stereo and not mono, unlike a few other products similar to this one. If a hand is waved over the top of the device, if an alarm is active the device is snoozed, or if music is playing the volume is temporarily dropped to 20 percent so that the microphones can hear you more easily. This isn't explained well in the manual unfortunately.

The Generic Alternative to Google Home

The Insignia portable speaker is basically the Generic alternative to the original Google Home. It is very similar size and a very close design. The Google Home and Insignia are pretty much fraternal twins.... what sets the Insignia apart is the permanent clock display and intermittent temperature display which is a great added bonus for a smart home assistant. The sound is great for the size of the speaker, the far field voice detection works very well, and it is aesthetically pleasing as a décor piece. I love that I am able to connect the Insignia to my Google Home group to play music throughout the house on all the speakers. The touch sensitive controls on top of the speaker also are very nice as they light up when you get close to pressing before you actually touch the speaker. Overall, this is a great option to add to your Google home accessories to control lights, thermostat, smart plugs, stream music, and be a quick informative assistant in your smart home.

    Superior to Google Home Mini

Because the price of this unit is on par with the Google Home Mini, there is no reason not to pick up the Insignia instead. The Insignia does play much louder than the Mini, and the low-end bass is impressive for a speaker this size. The microphone is more sensitive and will pick up a command from a soft voice that's far away from the unit - that is, when there's no music blaring from its speaker. The only downsides about the Insignia speaker are its mids and highs - music sounds more muddy and not as crisp as the Home Mini. Like other reviewers stated, I do wish that the temperature display were permanent instead of temporary. The unit is actually smaller than it looks in the pictures, which helps with crowded nightstands. For its price, it's a no-brainer.
