I am so sad I bought these. I picked up two for Christmas gifts thinking I would be upgrading from a Google Home Mini. The functionality (having a clock) and the speaker are definitely an improvement over the comparably priced mini but the wifi cards in these are completely useless. Unless you are right next to your router they will constantly cycle and lose connectivity. I literally threw them both in the trash and went back to OEM Google products.

Best value in Smart Speakers/Alarm Clocks

Setup was very easy and exactly the same as with other Google Home based products I own. Just plug it in, install the Google Home app on your phone/tablet and follow the directions to connect it to the internet. I really like how the setup didn’t require me to type in my access point password so it gets extra points for setup friendliness. As an alarm clock, I think Insignia has hit a home run. It’s small size easily fits into my night stand and the built-in digital clock display is easily read and not too bright. The inclusion of a USB port for charging your phone is a welcome and convenient feature. It has all the features to be a perfect bedside alarm clock. I really like using voice commands to set up my alarm over the old fashion way of holding down a button until the correct time is entered. All I have to do is say, “Hey Google, wake me up at 6:30am tomorrow” and it wakes me up the next morning as directed. Also, with a smart alarm clock, it will always have the correct time when power is restored after an outage. Sound quality is very good and in my opinion better than the Google Home Mini. I don’t have the regular Google Home to compare it to. Comparing audio quality to my Sony LF-S50G I think the Sony has slightly better midrange response (vocals sound a little better on the Sony). I really like the ability to use TuneIn to listen to local radio stations and podcasts. You never have to worry about poor radio reception. Voice recognition is excellent and is about the same as all my other Google Home based products. I can be heard from another room and I rarely have to repeat myself to be understood. I think the Insignia NS-CSPGASP is currently the best value for combo smart speakers / alarm clocks. For the price, it can’t be beat.

    Tough competitor for Google Home

I have to admit that I am really impressed with this smart bluetooth speaker. Like I mentioned above, it has given a tough competition to google home. First, because of it's relatively low price and second because of it's little time plus "temperature" display, which google home lacks. I wrote temperature in quotation marks for a reason which I will explain later. This Insignia bluetooth speaker lacks the ability to make calls which google home is capable of, hence I took 1 star off. Other than that, it is a very good gadget. Set-up was breeze. As some people have complained about the clock being stuck at Eastern Time zone, I never had this issue. Looks like Insignia has fixed this issue now and it is no more there. When you ask about the temperature, it will speak as well as display the current temperature but that stays on the display for about 5 seconds and disappears which was the reason I quotation marked it above but I'm not as concerned about it as some other reviewers are here. It's not a big of deal for me. You can control the volume by your voice which is kinda cool as well. The only thing that bothers me is sometime if the volume is a bit high, you have to yell at it to listen to you. I'm not sure if all devices are like this or I just got a lemon. But all in all, I'm pretty satisfied with it and would definitely recommend it.

    Small speaker but great performance

The speaker is no bigger than my travel size coffee thermos but what it delivers is amazing. This is my first smart speaker and I am really impressed by how it performs. I can be about 5 feet away and softly say "OK Google" and it will pick up my prompt and wait for instructions. I can ask it to open my Spotify and play a certain playlist and within matter of seconds, it'll start playing. I was skeptical about the sound quality of the speaker as well but I was proven wrong again. The sound isn't muddled at all. Truth be told, I am usually one to chose name branded products, but Insignia just made me think otherwise. The alarm is very easy to set by prompting the speaker what time you would want it to go off and it is a very pleasant melody that plays too. Overall, the speaker is fairly inexpensive, VERY user friendly, great sound quality. If you are looking for a gift for someone or looking for a speaker yourself, give this a try and you wont be disappointed!

Great low-cost alternative to Google Home

I own 3 of these units now (and 4 Google Homes). I would say they are a bit harder to get setup than the Home from Google, but not terribly so. I had to use a second device to setup my last one after the phone wouldn't work to do it. In terms of quality, it's excellent. Workmanship is good and it looks nice sitting on a night stand or table. I really love having the clock built in. It also briefly displays the alarm time after you ask it to set an alarm. Temperature displays on the second row when you ask it for the current temp. One of main reasons people buy these is to use for music. The sound is very good on these units. I actually prefer them to the Google Home. The Google Home's sound is VERY "bass-y", to the point that it muffles voices a bit, especially on an audio book. I find the Insignia units to be much more crisp and balanced across the spectrum, giving good bass, while still keeping crisp mids and highs. Seems strange for a $30 unit to sound better, but in my opinion it does. The one thing that it is missing vs Google Home is the ability to make phone calls, but I've only really done that once to try it out when I first started setting up a smart home. It's just not a feature that I find I need. If that's a key feature for you, keep in mind the Insignia unit can't do it. Overall, this is a great unit that replicates almost all functionality of a Google Home, at less than 25% of the price if you can catch the $30 sale.

Even though I have already begun my home automation with the Amazon Echo ecosystem... I didn't hesitate to try out the Google Home ecosystem... While I didn't want to shell out the amount the Google Home device cost, this one is a great alternative for the price... My first impression was how GREAT these sound compared to my Echo and Echo Dot... It's a good size device with good bass and treble... Voice recognition is good as it does pick up my voice while playing music at 68%. Works very well as a bluetooth speaker too! While I am fairly new to the Google Home platform... I am not surprised that there's no Amazon Music Unlimited compatibility. It does support Google Music, Spotify and Pandora, but if you're a Amazon Music subscriber, you MIGHT want to look at the Echo's. Highly disappointed with this as I might have a change of heart when it comes to home automation devices... Overall, if you're planning on using the Google ecosystem, this is a great budget friendly device to go with! And it's great on the eyes too! Good job Insignia.

    Better sound than Google Home

First thing when I opened the box was a surprise about the SIZE of this thing! It's SMALL - same size as Google Home! That big box threw me and I'm sure many other buyers off! Since I also own a Google Home, I placed it side by side, they're the same size! But with the Insignia, it has a nice LED display and nice motion sensing controls up top. But the best thing is the SOUND! It has much nicer high end (treble) compared to the Google Home. And the best thing is, it's no bigger than the Google Home! So, same size, more features, better sound plus I got it on a SALE price a quarter of what Google Home normally costs, this is a clear winner!!

The sales that Best Buy has on this speaker are mind-blowing. I do not understand how they can be profitable at such a deep discount! This speaker is a great bedroom speaker. There is a USB port on the back you can use to charge your phone. It's very responsive and it sounds very good for the size. You can also tell it to turn off the display at night (it can be too bright). It features both WiFi and Bluetooth so I can either ask it to play something from my Google Music account or I can stream to it from my phone or computer.

*This review is not sponsored. I am a personal tech reviewer.* SOUND: The Insignia Smart Speaker is a solid option for entry into the smart speaker market. The volume and sound on this device vastly outperforms the Google Home Mini. While low-range isn't perfect (as expected for the price point), the device puts out a fair amount of bass. At full volume, the speaker can fill a medium-sized room with audio. It certainly isn't Bose or Sonos quality. And, it isn't meant to be. Smart Features: The speaker essentially does everything that the Google Home Mini does, but with a small display. It does however have a few limitations such as lack of voice calling. However, this speaker can and should act as a supplement to any smart home set-up, not as as the primary device. It processes requests quickly and accurately. I have not yet utilized the alarm clock features. However, note that alarm clock features cannot be controlled remotely from the Google Assistant app. Additionally, apps like Spotify can be streamed to the device (as well as multi-room control). The volume control buttons and on-screen controls allow for control of the volume from the speaker rather than having to push the volume button or shout volume commands. My only gripe is that the weather indicator will not stay Microphone: Microphone performs well! While it doesn't utilize the same "360" microphone technology as the Google Home product line, it still manages to hear prompts and requests. That said, like the Google Home Mini, if the volume is at a high/max volume, the device will not hear you unless you come very close and raise your voice considerably. That said, if you are planning to play music at those volumes, you should be switching to the free stock Android Google Assistant (and iOS app) for home control. Display: The small digital LED display is perfectly-sized for the device. As a nightstand device, which is how I use it, the brightness of the display does not disturb my sleep while also being bright enough for use in a well-lit room. The digital led on the top of the speaker for the volume controls and play/pause are very useful with a futuristic vibe. Build: The product has a quality, sturdy build with rubber mats on bottom to prevent sliding. The device will sit in one spot (due to requiring power source) so moving it around is easy, but if portability is a big issue (which it shouldn't be for a smart home speaker) then upgrade to the newer version. Rating: I rated it 4 out of 5 stars because this is a quality, entry smart home product. Placed in a pre-existing (budding) smart home set-up, this device acts a wonderful supplement for smart home connection from the bed. To receive a five out of five rating, the device would require improved microphone, weather indicator, and better packaging.

This is a great bedside speaker with alarm and clock. It has google assistant built-in so answer is just shout away. Alarm clock works great. Can play music over bluetooth. Loud enough sound for bedroom. Clock display is dimmable. I got this speaker at special low low price so it was real steal. Overall great google assistant speaker with clock and alarm.

Good - Google Assistant integration, loud (finely tunable) volume, clear sound (dual speaker). Bad - reduced feature set (no phone calls etc), bright display and back indicator light are distracting at night, no temperature display (manual says it has one) Pretty good for a night stand alarm! And Black looks better than grey...

At $29.99, this product highly exceeds the value of the Google home devices. I've had this for a few weeks now and love it. The speaker is nice and clock face makes this product worth the value itself. The blue tooth capability is great when having family over. Don't waste your money on other products. However, I wouldn't pay regular price for this.

I initially got this alarm clock/speaker because of its price and to replace an old broken alarm clock. All I really wanted was something to show the time and wake me up. And at $25 it was a steal considering it has Google Assistant built in. It works great as an alarm, it works great as a clock, it's dimmable and the volume ranges from super low and soft to loud, and it's customizable in alarm sound, so all that is great. As to the speaker features, it works wonders. It's loud, it's clear and it's great for a sizeable bedroom. The microphone is sensitive and picks up the voice very well from close or far. And as a bonus it has a USB port to charge a cell phone or kindle on the bedside. Where it loses a star is that the latest features of Google Assistant are not always available compared to a Google Home. But then again, for the price this is excellent.

I have now purchased 2 of these speakers and I must say they are a great deal for the price I paid when on sale. The have pretty good sound quality and get much louder than the google home mini. They also work well as a bluetooth speaker, although I did notice some delay when I tried to pair with my laptop and use for video playback. I also like the fact that they have a usb port on the back you can use charge your devices. You cannot make phone calls like the google home products, but I knew that before purchasing. Sometimes it doesn't seem to pickup my Hey google, but overall it works pretty well. I like that you can also press the button on the top to pause the music. I wish it had an option to connect to external speakers via audio cable or Bluetooth, but you can't do that with the google mini either.

I really like this speaker. Sounds decent, but mostly it works with my smart home devices. Plus I can play music from my devices via Bluetooth. I couldn’t do that with my Google minis. I also like that it shows the time and temperature or volume level. No it’s not top of the line, but it’s so functional. I like it so well, I decided to get some for gifts.

I bought this to use mainly as an alarm clock but it is great all in one tool. It is compact and easy to fit in tight areas if you're limited on space. The speaker is loud especially for the size. The quality is better at mid range volumes (50-85% ) but when you max out the volume the sound does gets choppy. It was very easy to pair with my devices such as my phone, computer and TV. The Google Assistant is very responsive. In my case, I can be across the room ask the clock something and I won't have to repeat myself which is very nice considering I have had products where you have ask over and over because the device didn't understand. I picked this up on sale for $20 so for me it was an excellent purchase. I would definitely recommend it if you're in the market for a tool like this.

I am only a few days into using the devise, but so far so good. I was hesitant about having a google assistant system in the bedroom, for privacy reasons, but the mute microphone button appears to actually block the open mic. It tells you when the mic is off verbally as well as by displaying red dots across the top. When the microphone is turned back on, the google assistant says the microphone is on and displays soft blue dots across the top. The alarm clock still works with the microphone off. You can set as many alarms as you wish and can choose to wake up to an alarm sound or music of your choice. The sound quality of music played through the speaker is very balanced and quite nice. I mostly listen to jazz and classical in the bedroom, but it handled the theme song "Pony" that Channing Tatum danced to in Magic Mike... a little joke played on me by my adult daughter who thought it was funny to hijack the Spotify via Bluetooth in the house. The 4 stars instead of 5 is due to not having a sound machine function to play during sleep for white noise when I thought the devise had it built in. You can tell google assistant to play nature sounds, etc. from a playlist for x time, but it isn't the same.

I picked this item up because it was on sale for $25. The reviews were fairly good, and I needed an additional Google Assistant device for my Daughter, who had missed out on buying the Minis for $29 back in December (my other two kids had bought one each, and loved theirs, so she was feeling left out). The unit is functionally equivalent to a Google Home, with two exceptions that I've found. First, you can't make phone calls through Google Voice, and second, it has a clock display. The lack of phone calls isn't an issue, as none of my family use that function on our other Google devices. The clock is both a blessing and a curse. If you are sensitive to light, it may be "too bright" for your tastes, but is otherwise a useful addition to the device. The only problem is that if the unit loses access to internet (for whatever reason), the clock goes away. The display will be replaced by a square, and the clock function will not return until internet communication returns. This, along with the functionality of alarms being cloud based, means you should probably have a backup system if you plan on using it as your main alarm clock. The speaker on this device is better than the Google Home Mini (though not as good, I'm told, as the normal Google Home). It provides a nice rich sound with a bit more volume and fidelity available when compared to the Mini. Overall, I would definitely recommend this unit when it is comparably priced to Google Home devices, unless you need the Google Voice call functionality.
