The problem stemmed from buying the wrong laptop in the first place. It has no HDMi port. Beware what you purchase.

Plugged it in and caused intermittent black screens on my display. Graphics drivers were up to date. Tried it with another cable and worked fine.

Posted .If you’re using adapters or hubs in the connection chain, test the cable without them, as they can sometimes cause compatibility issues. Ensure the cable is securely connected at both ends. DisplayPort end of the connector to your computer and HDMI display.
