Speed up large backups

The backup drive is hard wired but my macbook pro was connected via wireless. It took over three days to do the backup. I installed the adaptor to be able connect my Macbook to the network by hard wire. The second backup set (also 1 TB) went to a second identical network attached backup drive. By going over the adaptor, the second identical backup took about 17 hours, a huge improvement.
