The USB type C port on the adapter will support passthrough charging to your laptop but is not required to operate the adapter. Spend a litle more and invest in more durable one.

As well as an iPad Pro. I used my personal laptop as well as another MacBook Pro, same year as the MacBook Air and it worked with the Pro.

Very Pricey for What Is Is!

I don’t think it will last very long, unless it is left alone on your desk to maintain connections with cables (and not constantly played with by plugging and unplugging cables, like using it for traveling). These hubs should not cost what they charge for them. If you need it, you have to pay up, but there should be lower cost solutions.
