When I plugged in an external hard drive along with my external computer screen and keyboard, there was not enough power coming from the USBC port on the computer to allow the small MyPassport external hard drive to work. You must get the version that actually plugs into your house electricity if you want to use the docking station as intended. Now I discovered I am two days past the return date, so I am screwed, thanks to the BestBuy salesman who talked me into this.

Posted .Hello, I'm sorry to hear the JCD543 is not working to your expectations. The docking station's USB ports are intended for peripherals such as mice, keyboards, flash drives, web cameras. In the case where the external hard drive is not working, it is possible the hard drives require more power than what can be provided via the docking station and therefore it will not work. In this case, you would need to connect the hard drive directly to your computer. I sincerely regret to hear about your experience. It was nothing but problems and work about 50% of the time. It finally went totally out. I purchased this unit and it has worked flawlessly. I wound highly recommend it to anyone needing to run multiple monitors or expand port options to your laptops.

This thing had potential at first

One day i was getting by with multiple screens, but then after my laptop went to sleep one day, i couldn't get my 2nd monitor to show up again. After unplugging and plugging back in it worked. The lag of reaction time between the 2nd monitor and what I'm actually doing is horrible sometimes. I'm a programmer, so performance is important to me, and this thing lags the most when needed the most. That being sad, also having to use DJVirtualDisplayAgent to allow Screen Recording in order for this thing to work is super fishy. Not sure if that's the only way you can get multiple monitors on MacBooks to work these days or not, but not stoked about that either. I gave this product 2 stars for trying, i know its not all your fault since MacBooks these days aren't the easiest to connect multiple monitors too, and lacking all the necessary ports for what is still "standard" connections. But that's the facts...

Almost immediate failure, poor support

Owned for 1 month when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had the device for a month, I've had the following issues: -unlike my last docking station, when it goes to sleep, all the screens lose their location, meaning that all apps are on different screens when I wake the system, so every time I log in, I need to rearrange all my apps, and that's a pain in the neck with seven screens. -a week after installation, the ethernet port failed. By the time I got support from J5, the poor BestBuy TWO WEEK return policy expired, so I have no choice but to request a replacement from J5. J5 will replace, but I need to send the old one back FIRST. They won't cross-ship, even after I offered to let them charge my credit card until they get the defective one back, but they won't do that either. So in order to get a replacement, I'd need to do without my seven screens for an unknown extended period of time while I ship the old one back and wait for a new one to be shipped. Working from an 11" laptop screen in my job is not possible, so I'll need to find a replacement and put the J5 device on eBay. (Seven screens on a Windows 10 machine? Yes...one direct from laptop HDMI port, three from the dock, one wireless and two using USB video converters).
