I waited impatiently for 4 months for these. I just got them a few days ago (pre-ordered) A little back story. My son has the Sony M1000 XM3. He had the dreaded issue with the plastic falling off. Sony customer service said it was from abuse but so many customers have had the same issue. They finally shipped him a refurbished pair after a lengthy email battle. That type of customer service, where the customer has to have a battle with them to have them admit they have a manufacturing problem is just not acceptable. So I figured I would wait for these. My initial impression was really good. The technology present in these is impressive, although I'm not sure what the smart sound feature really accomplishes. It takes a minute or so and then just seems to pick one of the 3 existing programs. Also, the highest volume was lower than I would have hoped. Then today, just a few hours ago, I experienced a weird problem. It's probably user error, but the sound just randomly stops for 30 seconds or so and then starts again right where it stopped. Initially, I thought it was that the headphones sensed that they were off my ears and the automatic setting was pausing the audio. Or it may be something with my Samsung Note 8 settings. Lastly, the ANC is good but not really as isolating as Sony. I am sorry this review is not a glowing report, but having access to the Sony gives me the luxury of comparing the two. The short story is I think the sound quality is really clean, there's a lot of features and customization available, and using them for phone calls is fantastic. But here's my hope. These have just been released. I am hopeful Jabra will take the customer feedback and just come out with a firmware fix. Jabra has been around for a long time and I'm sure they will fix the issues I mentioned to make these flawless.

I have an expensive pair of full-size, over-the-ear headphones that I took on a trip to Hawaii. They were good, and much better than my earbuds that let in a lot of background noise. On my next vacation, I forgot to pack the headphones. My husband and I streamed a few videos on the plane. When he didn’t want to watch anymore, I used his noise cancelling headphones. What a huge difference in the audio quality and enjoyment. The sounds of droning engines and noise from the people were completely shut out. I no longer had to press the in-ear headset into my head to try to block the noise out. I decided right then and there that was a necessary feature to have in a set of headphones. Upon opening the box to the Jabra Elite 85h, I was immediately enamored with the semi-hard shell carry case. The zipper was not cheesy, and the case had a convenient carrying handle that was large enough for people with bigger hands and wrists. Inside the case you find the headset, USB-c charging cable (30 cm/11.8 in), audio cable (120 cm/47 in), and flight adaptor to plug in on a plane. The headset is black, fabric-like on the outside, smooth on the inside. It is comfortable and lightweight (296 g/10.4 oz) and the ear cups are soft. The quick start guide is informative and helpful. I learned how to use these headphones faster and easier than my other set. The battery life for music and talk time is 41 hours on a single charge (32 with ANC on), and up to 36 hours of battery with ANC on. I didn’t test this out. Quick charge via USB-C (5 hours in 15 min) or 2 hours 30 minutes for a full charge. When you orient the ear cups, the light on the bottom pulses green (on), then blue (if connected to a device via Bluetooth). Be sure to see which side goes on which ear (L/R). The voice informs you of Battery level and whether or not they are connected to a device. Once on, you will quickly notice the sound clarity is excellent. Button on left side: Hear through, ANC, Off. Right side – volume up/next track; answer/end call, play/pause music, Bluetooth (hold); Volume down/previous track; one-touch access and hands-free voice assistant access to Amazon Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant. You can pair up to 8 devices. When you connect to the 9th, you lose the first. What is great is that two devices can be connected at once. That is what I call multi-tasking! Connection to the device is 10 meters (32.8 feet). Jabra’s audEERING Artificial Intelligence feature is incredible. The SmartSound automatically adjusts the noise cancelling (audio profiles) and hear through setting based on background sound in the environment. The technology can detect more than 6,000 unique sound characteristics, and it either amps up, lowers or turns off the audio moments (commute, in public, in private). It is great as a battery saver, and makes anyone’s commute a much more pleasurable experience. I primarily use the headphones for travel and inside my home. In the evening, I find myself working on my laptop creating indoor cycling profiles with Spotify playlists while my husband watches television. It is difficult to hear the music over the volume on the TV, so I need headphones. The noise cancelling feature helps me accomplish my task in less time. At this time, I have only used it for music. But it uses 6 of the 8 microphones to enhance call quality, such as blocking out wind noise and background distractions. The headphones have proximity awareness or on-ear detection. If you take headphones off, the music pauses or the call is muted. Turn the ear cups and put back on, the music/call resumes. If you remove the phones and turn the cups flat, the headphones turn off with an audible noise and the light on the bottom pulses red. When done, the headset folds up easily to fit in the case where it stays protected. With the Jabra Sound+ app, you can customize sound settings (EQ, base, treble, etc), music profiles, choose voice assistance, track battery, and SmartSound features. After you download the app, put on the headphones and follow the voice instructions to pair with your phone. I had to travel to Boston the next day, so I decided to bring them with me and put them to the test. I used them to listen to my music in the car while my husband listened to his music on the radio. I couldn’t believe how well they blocked out the wind and background sounds in the car. It made the trip so much more enjoyable. I am so pleased with these headphones.

Great headphones that fell short in key areas

I was very hopeful with these headphones and in many areas they were great. However, in two key areas they were no good in terms of volume/loudness and connectivity. Hopefully this is something Jabra is able to address in a future firmware update but as they are I was not that impressed. If it's addressed in an update, I'd definitely recommend these but as they are cannot recommend. In terms of features, these headphones were awesome and hit all the right areas. USB-C charging, on ear detection for auto-on/off pause/resume. In comfort they were great as well and I liked the folding design with the included case. In all they touch on all the right areas and even have buttons for control from the headphone itself. I paired these up with an iPad Pro 10.5 to watch videos, and iPhone XS Max for playing some of my music. What's great is the headset connects to both at the same time which is awesome but the app has trouble detecting them so after resetting them and repairing to just one device it works just fine. The apps audio controls were hard to touch/control so hoping that's updated as well in a future update. Audio quality is bright, crisp and clean which was great but there is ZERO LOUDNESS!! In some of the movies I tested these out on during a flight across the country the volume was up all the way and barely loud enough for my taste, and with no way to go any higher! On top of that and even more importantly the audio cut out randomly at times constantly on both the iPhone and the iPad Pro connected separately or at the same time (neither way made a difference) so the listening experience was not the greatest. Because that's the purpose of the headphones that's why I gave them only 1 star. If they can't stay connected and have a decent volume level I can't recommend them. Very disappointed and hopefully something addressed in an update. There are other cool features like the hear through feature but given the audio issues it's of no relevance to the review as the audio cutting out issue happened with ANC on or off. All in all, they are good but can't recommend them due to the audio loudness and connectivity issues..

I have contacted Jabra and I can not return them. Their the worst head set I ever owned. They pop and crackle when connected to a windows or Mac computer. They let your ring tone ring in your ears, and amber alerts, weather alerts and other alerts blast in you ear drums even if phone is on silent. The battery if you leave them on standby for a day the battery drains for no reason. And after 2 days my Beats 3 wireless still has a charge. The battery life on this is not completely accurate or at least in the one I bought. So I am out 300 dollars for a pair of earphones that hurt my ears.

These headphones are comfortable, very well made, and will stand up to every day wear and tear. They are certified as being rain and dust resistant- a great feature for active teens and hubbies that like to wear them outside while mowing the lawn. They are the perfect traveling companion. (The carrying case helps with that as well.) The ANC feature drowns out other travels and plane or engine sounds around you so you can hear only what you want to! I like that the headphones use an included USB-C port for charging. It takes about 2 hours to fully charge them and a 15 minute charge can provide 5 hours of use. The battery is rated to last as long as 36 hours. We have been using them extensively for the last week and last we checked, they still have 60% battery life left. Every time you put the headphones in listening mode, it tells you the battery level. These headphones offer the very best battery life of our entire collection! About the headset controls: The button on left side is for HearThrough, ANC, Off. The button on the right side controls volume up/next track; answer/end call, play/pause music, Bluetooth (hold); Volume down/previous track; one-touch access and hands-free voice assistant access to Amazon Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant. There isn’t an on/off button! To turn the headphones on, just put them in the listening position. To turn them off, lay the cans flat- super easy and smart design! The Active Noise Cancelling feature is amazing! The Jabra Elite has eight microphones, four of them are used by the digital ANC to filter out background noises. SmartSound, when activated in the Free Jabra App, or, the headphone mics will gather information from your surroundings and switch between different ‘Moments’ automatically. My son has the app on his phone, he noticed a big difference while wearing them on the bus.

Hi Jodie- Thank you for writing a review of the Jabra Elite 85h. We are sorry to read that you are unsatisfied with the way the 85h turns on and off. The best with to turn off the headphones is to tuck in 1 headphone as the other follows, then place the headset directly in the included hard-case. This will ensure that your headphones are turned off and protected. Once you remove the 85h from the hard-case, gently open the headphones to your desired fit on your head. We regret to learn that you did not enjoy the Sound+ app. In the future please contact the Jabra Support team for further assistance. We are happy to help you. Jabra

Hello Knyn - We are sorry to learn that the Jabra Elite 85h did not meet your expectations. We limit the audio volume in our products to protect your hearing. PeakStop eliminates harmful sound spikes (i.e. your prankster friend blows an air horn into his microphone because he thinks giving you permanent eardrum damage is hilarious.) SafeTone provides additional protection in other scenarios but is not built into the Elite 85h (it is used in our Enterprise - Office and Call Center products). I’ve used various ANC headphones and these are the best overall so far. Sound Quality isn’t the best but I find the ANC to be top notch. Best in class in my opinion. Inside the box you’ll find a hard shell case and inside you have the headphones , airplane adapter , a USB to USB type C cablento charge the device and a 3.5 to 3.5 mm cable to connect it to your device wired if it doesn’t support Bluetooth ( Bluetooth 5.0) . They advertise battery life with ANC on around 36 hours and 41 hours with it off. I have it on and used it for a whole day and it was 70% or so by the end of the day so I would say the battery life is a close enough number. They also include an app which can EQ these a bit which is nice as well.

The headphones are great all round. I've heard of all the problems regarding low volume, poor sound, and failing connection with computers and app failure. I've had these for a few days and so far they've great all around. N0 problems with computer audio, volume is OK. maybe if you wanna be deaf it's another story. ANC is not the best but does the job if you have music playing at louder volumes you wont hear anything around. Hearthrough capabilities is AMAZING. especislly when in public spaces or traffic areas where I'd rather be aware of my surroundings while still listen to music and such. you will hear everything clearly and your music will sound great at the same time. the headphones in my experience have been very accurate and warm sounding. if you're into brighter sounds these might not be for you. Their call quality, specifically their microphone system is the best in this type of headphones. If you're a business guy and rely on good phone conferences/calls at all times or while traveling these are the ones to get. The app is pretty good, it's easier to switch settings from the app in my opinion, although the UX of the headphone buttons is pretty good too. You get what you pay for in the brand you're getting. You're getting a JABRA headphones, which are known for the great phone headsets and mics, expect greatness in these areas. as headphones for music, I can't find anything wrong with these, you get a full range, accurate bass, no distortion at any volume and pretty comfortable. ANC might not be to some people's taste but I'm just looking to dampen engine noise in airplanes and traffic noises in commutes or working in cafes and this does it well enough for me.

This is my first set of noise cancelling headphones and I’m really happy with them. The overall sound is great. Strong bass, sharp tones and more than adequate volume while keeping all of the external noises away. I have used them at home in a quiet environment with noise cancelling off and barely heard my dogs bark. Tried again with it on and someone had to tap me on the shoulder to let me know they had almost jumped through a window it was so bad. :-) I have used them for a couple of calls and am very happy with the sound. I felt like I was in a padded room and not able to hear anything outside of my immediate area. The battery life is excellent. I have used them for at least 12 hours so far and there is no sign of the battery needing any attention. Comes with a convenient set of cables both for charging and use while on the plane or connected directly to an aux port. The case is a very durable but slightly bulky (but not a knock, I’d much rather protect these things very well). I see these as a top competitor to the other high end similar products out there. Take a listen to them all and then decide. If you can somehow arrange a blind test, that is my recommendation, I think you could be very surprised.

Jabra has entered the world of premium noise-cancelling over the ear headphones in a big way, comparing very well with other phones in its class like the Bose QC 35’s. I would suggest downloading the Jabra app on your smartphone before opening the really nice case. The operation of these headphones requires a learning curve, the details are explained fully in the app. There’s no on/off switch for example. When removing the phones and placing them on my head a voice immediately started speaking to me. Placing the ear cups in the listening position automatically turns them on. Placing the cups flat for storage turns them off. Bluetooth pairing was easy. The headphones contain EIGHT microphones, four of which is for something Jabra calls SmartSound. They pick up the sound around you to filter out unwanted noise, changing the noise cancellation as conditions around you change. You can choose the noise cancelling effect depending upon your surroundings. The other four microphones are for your voice. The system seems to work well. When talking on the phone, my listener said that my voice sounded much more natural than when using any other headphones, almost like I was talking directly into the phone itself. Also answering the phone was a pleasure. No buttons to hit, you just say “Answer!” The music stops and you’re on the phone. The same for talking to your digital assistant. I asked, “Hey Google, what’s the temperature outside?” the music stopped, she told me and the music continued, no buttons to press either. I also liked the way I could tailor the music to my liking with the equalizer on the app, using one of the preset settings or I could adjust the different frequencies myself. That always irritated me about the Bose headphones, their app had no equalizer. A Bose rep told me once that the company didn’t trust the user to change the music settings. I’m glad that Jabra had enough confidence in me to allow me to do it, lol The Elite 85h did feel a little heavier on my head than did the Bose. They did feel very comfortable however, just something I noticed. Overall, I loved these headphones, both from the build quality and the innovation and features Jabra brings to this class of quality headsets.
