Just OK
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Not good for dialog. Bought this thinking that Dialog would improve from the rear speakers only to find that a much cheaper bar with rear speakers on the same TV had a much better conclusion

Meh...
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The sound is great. Unfortunately, after about a week, it just goes to MUTE and the ONLY way to fix this is to unplug it all. If I could, I'd take it back. Yah, the sound is good, the headache isn't worth it.

Awesome Wireless Surround Sound System
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The JBL Bar 1000 on the surface looks like a normal soundbar + subwoofer combo. Sleek and black, it mounts just like a normal soundbar under, or in my case over, your TV. Unlike some others, this has optical audio input, bluetooth, and three HDMI inputs in addition to the HDMI out to the TV. Which means it can as a reasonable sound receiver taking multiple inputs and passing through to the TV as needed. The TV audio goes out through the same HDMI out/eARC connection which is great - as you don't need your other sources to go through the TV. So between this and the likely several HDMI inputs you have on the TV, you're likely pretty well covered. My only disappointment input-wise was that the optical input effectively shares the channel with TV. So you couldn't use the HDMI out to TV and optical at the same time. That said, it's pretty unlikely to have something that has optical out but not HDMI. That said, I do have a smart TV device that's capable of outputting better audio over optical than HDMI so I lose out by not being able to have it pipe video to the TV but audio separately to the soundbar. Now, even that wouldn't be that big a deal if this soundbar was just a normal 2.1 channel (stereo + the subwoofer). But it's not. It can effectively act as a 7.1 channel system. That's because the soundbar itself has two detachable speakers than when detached act as rear speakers and the bar itself is effectively a 5 channel device, with left and right up-firing speakers, left and right "stereo" speakers, and a center channel. With the sub, and detachable speakers, you get the full 7.1. Setup is pretty easy - as is normal for these. Mount the sound bar, connect the sub to power, hook up HDMI and you're up and running. The sub connects automatically on first start and using the remote to repair it is pretty simple. On the remote you can cycle between TV (HDMI/eARC or Optical), Bluetooth, and the three HDMI inputs. It also supports WiFi which lets you stream music to it as a Chromecast or Alexa device. I liked being able to add it as a source for whole house music during parties. Normally, the living room isn't covered as it doesn't make sense to have a permanently on smart speaker there getting confused by the TV. Wifi setup is through the JBL One app which configures things over Bluetooth. And aside from connecting to smart speaker services, you can simply connect to it over Bluetooth to stream music directly from your phone or other device. With the two detachable speakers connected, it's obviously not acting like a 7.1 system. I'm not sure if it's doing 5.1 in that mode or just 2.1 but the speaker sounds great. Definitely better that my TV speakers alone and the base from the sub is very nice. I use it with the detachable speakers connected most of the time, but when it's time to watch a movie or show I'm really into, I grab the speakers and put them on the sides of the couch for the full surround experience. And it is ridiculous how great they are. Frankly, I can't tell the difference between this and completely wired systems. The detachable speakers charge when docked and last for at least 3 hours which is a decent amount. I've yet to use them long enough that the battery runs out. They also have USB-C power input so you can mount them permanently in surround mode and just plug them into a standard USB charger. I never noticed any lag in audio so if you don't already have a surround setup, this is a great choice due the flexibility you have. There's even a wall mount in the box for them. The remote is pretty basic, power, input selections, bass, calibrate, mute and volume up/down buttons. A cool thing you'd notice when getting everything set up is that there's no "screen" to break up the front. It's instead cleverly "hidden" by the visual indicators being LED pixels that are behind the speaker grill. They turn on when the speaker is first turned on and in response to making a change using the remote but otherwise stay off and unobtrusive. If you've ever had a soundbar or other device annoy you with an always on light or too bright screen when in use, no worries here. Sadly, the remote itself is infrared only which means it needs line of sight to the soundbar to work. Most of the time, I'm not using it anyway as eARC lets me use my TV remote to control volume and mute. The only weird thing is that the volume level indicator on the soundbar and my TV don't match up. With my TV speakers disabled, the volume level jumps by 3 instead of 1 when volume up is pressed. Also, if you use the soundbar remote, the TV also displays the same volume change. But once I got used to seeing volume "30" not be something ridiculously loud, I don't even pay attention to it anymore. I've experimented with sound projector like sound bars that attempt to do a virtual surround sound system with varied success. I like the approach taken here, it works a lot better. There's een a calibration you can perform but this works great without it. I honestly can't think of a feature I'd want that this doesn't have. Maybe in some distant future, we'll have 16K TVs and this won't be able to keep up but until then, it's pretty dang awesome.

A Solid 4-Stars
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.SHORT REVIEW: The JBL BAR 1000 system exceeds our family’s expectations for a room filling, 3-D Multibeam Surround Sound, Dolby Atmos supported soundbar. And it does this while maintaining dialogue clarity that is consistently understandable. After using for 5 days, never once did my wife ask me “what did s/he just say?” My recommendation is for small to medium sized rooms. Much larger environments would no doubt benefit from JBL’s flag-ship BAR 1300 system. PROS - Easy to Setup; Truly Wireless Rechargeable Rear Speakers; 10” Subwoofer; Impressive Volume (room size dependent); Understandable Dialogue; Supports 4K Dolby Vision Atmos and DTS:X; Multi-Room Music; JBL ONE app; Rear Calibration; WiFi or Ethernet; End-caps for Soundbar & Rear Speakers; and Learns TV’s Remote Functions. CONS - Streaming music lacks substance (subjective); Limited EQ Adjustments with only one alternative room EQ choice; No USB-C cables or power adapters provided for a stationary installation of the rear speakers. BOTTOM LINE: If this is your first soundbar, or you are upgrading from 2.1, 3.1, 4.1, even some 5.1.2 systems, then you will be blown away when watching Blu-Ray movies. But if you do a lot music streaming, or upgrading from a 7.1.x system, then you may not be as enthusiastic. LONG IN-DEPTH REVIEW: BACKGROUND: I own and continue to use two competitor’s soundbars (7.1.2 in a larger Family Room area, and 3.1 in our Bed Room) that incorporate proprietary dialogue technologies (Voice Adjust & AccuVoice). This review will use our existing systems as a baseline for comparison. This JBL is installed a 12’ x 17’ x 8’ Living Room with hardwood floors without drapes. UNBOXING: Extremely well packaged for shipping. Easy enough to remove the subwoofer, soundbar, individual rear speakers, and other accessories to begin the setup. BASIC SETUP: A quick setup guide was included but too small to actually read. I had downloaded and read the setup guide along with the full user manual. My initial goal was to plug in the soundbar and charge the rear speakers. Both the sub and rear speakers came paired to the soundbar. FIRMWARE UPGRADE: I used an iOS tablet to download the JBL ONE app for setup, feature tweaking, and upgrades. Once installed the base unit became “self-aware” and began a firmware upgrade that took about 12 minutes @ 300 Mbps. SOUND CHECK: Before connecting to our HDTV, since I had the JBL app opened, I used iOS Airplay to stream a Goose concert. Sounded pretty darn good, somewhat overly “bright”, but still putting a smile on my face while I was tweaking the audio settings alternating between the remote and the JBL app. I thought the JBL cranked beyond my expectations at a 22 level (scale 0 to 32). But overall volume was not an issue for me as others have mentioned. After using for 5 days, to my ears, the musical sound stage was lacking in overall warmth and sounding thin. As much as I tried, I could not dial in/out the limited EQ settings or by turning off PureVoice and Smart Mode. I must mention unlike other mid to high end systems, there are no easily selectable EQ settings allowing for different uses. Example, it would be awesome to have a dedicated remote button with the ability to step through preconfigured EQ settings like Auto Mode, TV Mode, Night Mode, Music Mode, Stereo Only Mode, etc. Options that have the audio fine-tuned for specific uses. Maybe JBL can incorporate those features into a firmware upgrade with controlling through their JBL ONE app? I understand there actually are 2 modes, default “Smart Mode” for rich sound effects, and “Standard Mode” for news & weather with reduced effects. (See PDF Manual.) Suggestion - make your modes user friendly by including in your JBL ONE app, while providing other mode options (as mentioned above) would be a welcomed addition for users HDTV CONNECTIVITY: Used the provided HDMI cable to connect our HDTV eARC port to the JBL eARC port. Then connecting our ATT STB to the soundbar HDMI-1 and our Blu-ray player to HDM-2. Excellent feature having 3 HDMI inputs on the JBL using it as the source switch. CALIBRATION: Once the soundbar is setup, and the rear speakers are sufficiently charged, you should calibrate for your specific room environment. A fairly simple 2-step process after you read the manual, or use the app, and follow the instructions. I can’t say it changed much, other than possibly “centering” the rear speakers. Anyway, I applaud JBL for incorporating this feature for those room environments that may substantially benefit due to high ceilings, drapes, rugs, etc. TEACH ME: The JBL base unit can “learn” four HDTV remote functions: Power on/off, Volume +, Volume -, and Mute. This was helpful because my ATT STB doesn’t support HDMI-CEC. Reference the full PDF manual, 7.2.1. DOLBY ATMOS: Dropped in the Blu-ray player “San Andrea” and was immediately treated to a thunderous immersive room of Atmos 3-D special effects extraordinaire emanating from all directions at a volume 20 level. While at no time did I have any issues with vocals or dialogue. CABLE & STREAMING: Using AT&T was less impressive vrs. Blu-ray movies. Watching cable movies and some streaming movies there is a volume drop. I believe it’s the source material and/or streaming service provider, not JBL. Nevertheless, you may encounter volume inconsistencies between media types. REMOTE: I thought the remote was lacking needed features. Like a stepping treble button, a dedicated PureVoice button, and maybe a Smart Mode on/off button. But after setup with the JBL ONE app, I find the remote adequate covering the most used functions. PUREVOICE: This is JBL’s proprietary technology with “…enhanced vocal clarity and easily hear and understand speech”. Works for me! And you can temporarily turn OFF PureVoice. MULTI-ROOM MUSIC: I was able to easily add the JBL BAR 1000 “Living Room” system to my existing Android phone Google Home app, combining it with my “Family Room / Kitchen” competitor’s system, into a “Home Group” for a first-floor musical bacchanalia. It was under this Home Group sound environment, with both systems simultaneously streaming music, that I and others could evaluate (A - B) the competing two systems. (The competitor’s won out by all…) Anyway, if you have nothing to compare it to, you should still be satisfied. REAR SPEAKERS: I intentionally saved this topic for last. For the past 5 days, I have vacillated between these truly wireless rechargeable rear speakers being a technical monumental achievement, vrs. the constant moving back and forth for charging is a bit of a pain. Including a set of USB-C cables with power adapters would have resolved this dilemma. Since I have this system installed in our living room that is not used daily for movies, I can easily live with moving to charge. Plus, my wife prefers I didn’t clutter her end tables with my toys…
