The JBL Bar 1000 could be the best premium Atmos, Dolby Vision capable 7.1.4 soundbar system out right now. “Could be,” because while it sounds amazing, the lack of a button on the remote to instantly switch sound profiles, i.e., movie, news or surround, stereo detracts from its enjoyment. This is far from a catastrophic flaw, of course, but, for me, it does needlessly present a usability hurdle to prevent it from being a 5-star product. As an audio “system” it’s top-notch and unique with part of the bar being detachable for use as physical 70w rear speakers with both up and front firing tweeters. A robust 10” wireless subwoofer that down fires crushes soundbars with only built-in woofers. The result is a satisfying realistic surround sound less reliance on “virtualization.” Another outstanding feature is the Bar 1000’s three HDMI-in ports, all with the latest 2.3 spec, which gamers will hail, because it’s hard enough to find a soundbar even one 2.3 HDMI port. It also greatly “future proofs” this model for 8K video passthrough, if that ever becomes a “thing.” So, yes, the Bar 1000 is excellent tech except for the remote. I’ll discuss my impressions, including the remote, in more detail, but first a quick summary of what’s in the box and setup. In addition to the Bar 100 and 10” wireless sub, included is a remote ( with AAA batteries), a HDMI cable, two power cables – one for the soundbar and one for the sub, plus basic wall mounts for both the soundbar and the detachable speakers – optional to install of course. It’s a nice add-in since many other companies charge extra for these. The Bar 1000 construction is ABS plastic with a metal grill. Even though it’s plastic it feels solid and has no negative impact on sound quality. I would prefer a wood frame, but I wouldn’t want to pay extra for it either. Overall, it’s clean and bland, which is perfect for a soundbar. Soundbars should be heard, not seen. If you want to attach it to a 3rd party mount, the mounting holes are on the bottom, not back. Connection to the TV is via e-ARC HDMI. There is also an optical audio-in jack along with the aforementioned 3 HDMI inputs. An USB-A port is provided for streaming devices, such as the Fire TV Stick, that require USB power. Volume controls and a sync button are on top of the Bar 1000. This is mostly a “backup,” since I assume users, like myself, will rely on either the remote or app to control the soundbar. I appreciate JBL not adding useless buttons or distracting lights here to keep the top uncluttered. Brilliantly though, JBL did embed a LED status message area on the front. It’s invisible except when you change volume, inputs and such to give you visible confirmation. Setup is simple, but if you want to use Wi-Fi, and the JBL One app’s features granting the app permission to use your exact location is required. I found this off-putting but relented. I tried allowing only my general location and it refused to start the setup process. After setup is complete you can turn off exact location, but, I guess, “damage” is done at that point. I know there is a growing number of privacy aficionados, so you have been warned. During setup the app will connect the Bar 1000 to your home Wi-Fi for use with streaming protocols like AirPlay2 and Google Chromecast. The Bar 1000 showed up in my available speakers on my Apple devices after this setup. If you don’t use either of these protocols you can connect tp your music streaming subscription via the JBL One app. All major services are available except Apple Music, which, of course, if you use an Apple device you can connect with Airplay 2. This is also when the Bar 1000 will also calibrate to your room. This involves it sending out tones to determine your room’s characteristics, distance to the sitting area and placement of the rear speakers. If you change anything recalibrating is easy from the app. The app also features a 3-band equalizer and all of the functions of the physical remote with one big exception – I had no luck using it to turn off “smart mode,” equalization, i.e., automatic, which I’ll get into. This is a huge headscratcher since it devalues using the app over the physical remote since there are times when you’ll want to turn off “smart mode.” Also, so far, I’ve found nothing to indicate whether the microphone is on or off by default, or seen any button, or button combination, that will turn it off. I can only assume it’s off by default untill you set up a voice service like Alexa, or Hey Google. Then again, there is that saying about assuming. This omission is bit odd since I have other sound bars and speakers that have a light to indicate if the microphone is on. Listening impressions: Movies (Atmos, DD7.1, DD5.1), TV networks, Major cable entertainment channels -- Comparing the Bar 1000’s spec sheet to similarly priced competitors it is missing frequency depth. In reality this is a non-factor as it’s a dazzling powerhouse for movie surround sound with a definite presence. If it’s missing some low or highs I don’t notice it. Dialog is clear even at low volume and pinpoint to the speaker – no muddy mumbling or frequency cut offs. Being able to use at low volume is useful at night. There is also good separation of simultaneous special effects surround sounds like street noise, squealing car tires, hypersonic planes. The 10” subwoofer really shows its chops here too. For example, in final Top Gun Maverick scenes the exploding missiles and soaring dogfights are heard and felt, and to me, at a greater extent than my soundbar with “built-in” subwoofer. That soundbar is good, but the JBL wins here, no question. The booms were BOOMS! To be fair though, I don’t have room or desire for a subwoofer in the room my other soundbar is in, so it has its place and value. The “punch” of the subwoofer can be adjusted in 5 levels in case you don’t want to disturb the neighbors. Most importantly, with it’s 7.1.4 setup, the surround sensation is 360 degrees, floor to ceiling. No fake simulated sound obvious with some sound bars. The detachable rear speakers are the difference because obviously real rear speakers are always going to sound better than phantom ones. The rear speaker design is genius and easy to use. Magnets hold them to the Bar 1000. When you are ready to watch something surround encoded they peel right off the bar. Now just place them behind your listening area for instant rear speakers. The detachable speakers are powered with internal, rechargeable, batteries. When the movie is over reattach to Bar 1000 to recharge, which takes 4 hours (they work while charging too). Alternatively, they charge via USB-C, though neither a USB-C cable nor charger is included. If you binge movies or entire TV shows be aware the batteries conk out after about 2.5 hours. At that point you’ll need to connect to USB-C if you want to continue using the rear speakers for your binge. Also, in case you were wondering, no, the rear speakers cannot be used independently. Similar to movies, the sound quality for current TV programs is excellent this programming typically is mixed with at least 5.1, and true surround is where the Bar 1000 shines. Other TV (News, YouTube channels, older TV shows, some sports broadcasts) This is where I found the remote (and app) design distracted me from my enjoyment of the Bar 1000. The source quality of sports, news channels, YouTube podcasts, and older TV shows, unlike movies and TV shows recorded in surround, can vary widely with factors such as age of the show, the creator’s soundstage, and broadcast quality of the channel. Especially with the latter three, surround is unwanted. Most soundbars and AV receivers are designed so the user can quickly turn off awkward surround with dedicated equalization buttons such as “news”, “sports,” “neutral,” to restore natural sound. Not so on the Bar 1000. Instead it defaults to “smart mode,” and controls equalization. As discussed, this works great with surround encoded movies and TV shows. But with, say a stereo news channel or YouTube podcast “smart mode” fails unless you like your podcast to sound like the host is speaking through a megaphone. Vocals here are boomy and wide rather than pinpointed on the speaker. The solution here is to turn off smart mode. The problem for me is having to perform some “finger gymnastics,” by pressing the mute button for 3 seconds then the up-volume button. There is no reason JBL could not have programmed a dedicated “smart mode” button. It’s just annoying to have to toggle smart mode with multiple buttons and to me that demotes this otherwise 5-star soundbar to 4. Additionally, the remote is not backlit which is another knock on convenience here because in addition to doing the “finger gymnastics” to adjust the surround, you’ll also have to turn the lights on or up to see the buttons. Music -- As mentioned, there are many ways to stream music to the Bar 1000. I use AirPlay 2 with both my own lossless music collection on my Mac and Spotify (free). Naturally lossless sounds fuller than Spotify’s lossy, but both have clear vocals and notes even at low volumes that might be used for background rather than an all-out party, a sign of a good speaker. Of course, it does depend on the source. For instance, music recorded in the 50’s often has a hollow sound that no speaker is going to fix. The subwoofer is on point here too, putting life and vibe into your listening pleasure. The room my Bar 1000 is in is rather small – about 16x14, so whether it can fill a larger room, I can’t say. But for a room of this size it’s on par with a good pair of bookshelf speakers.

The JBL Bar-1000 is my fourth soundbar, and it’s by far the best. It’s exceptionally clean and clear, and the Pure Voice feature keeps dialog from getting lost. This is a full-featured sound system. It has Dolby Atmos, DTX-X, and MultiBeam surround sound. Additionally, there’s WIFI-6, Bluetooth 5, Chromecast, AirPlay, Alexa with Multi-Room Music, Google Assistant, 3-HDMI inputs plus an eARC connection. It has everything I want in a modern soundbar including 880 watts of power that will fill a room. All of this comes in an attractive package along with a slim remote that has every adjustment you need in a simple format. Setup was a breeze. The JBL One App leads you through the process of connection, pairing the wireless sub and rear channel speakers (typically automatic), connecting to WIFI, and updating its firmware. Finally, it will tune the system to your room. The JBL App will also connect to several streaming music services and allow your mobile device to play through the system. The rear channel speaker can either be magnetically docked to the ends of the bar or detached and placed anywhere you wish since they wirelessly connect with the bar. They are battery-powered and recharge when docked, but they also have USB-C power connections if you wish to keep them detached. I don’t know why you’d want them docked since they are the rear channels and also have Atmos upward-firing speakers. Sound is what it’s all about, and the Bar-1000 is a beast. My viewing area is at the end of a 16 x 32 foot room, and I watched the new Avatar movie as a test. The sub was shaking my sofa without being at its highest level (I backed it down). The sound was immersive while being clear and bright. It was the best Atmos experience I’ve had with a soundbar system. The Pure Voice feature helps tremendously, especially with TV broadcasts, where the surround effects and ambient sounds muddle the dialog. Even though I had a good soundbar (the same brand as my TV which offered a couple of unique features), it’s been retired. The JBL is my system now. For the quality, power, and sound it gives, it’s good value. I initially switched from a large discrete surround system to a soundbar not for audio performance but for simplicity and appearance in my living room. Now I can still have that minimalist appearance plus sound that’s as good as the big system. I definitely recommend this system.

High Quality Surround Sound Without Wires!

I have dreamed of a sound bar with these features for a long time. As someone who lives in an apartment and not planning to stay for a long time, I do not want to run wires for rear channel speakers, but I have never been able to experience true surround sound with the typical 2.1 soundbars. With this bar having detachable, rechargeable, wireless speakers, I have true surround sound without the effort. The rear speakers even have USB-C plugs if I want to leave them in place long-term. Otherwise, I can pull them off the bar when I want to watch a movie and just put them back when done. The bar even comes with end caps for the bar and rear speakers if someone chooses to leave them detached permanently. The other great detail is that the rear speakers snap back into place on the bar with magnets, so the process is simple! When it comes to sound, I am really, really impressed. This has a powerful wireless subwoofer, which takes zero effort to set up. Simply give it power, and the job is done. For the most part, I am keeping the bass at level 1, so I do not bother my neighbors. In testing, I was blown away by this being a soundbar. Anything more than bass level 1 in the evening, and I might have some complaints. After a simple calibration process where the rear speakers are first sat next to your seat, followed by wherever you want to place them behind you, the system has spatial awareness to time sounds based on your location in the room. I kept playing demo videos just to experience the excellent surround effects. Overall, I have not found any negatives about the sound quality. Simply put, it is excellent! I have not felt this immersed in sound since I had a traditional surround sound system years ago, before soundbars were a thing. Inputs include 3 HDMI ports, plus a TV output with ARC. If you do not have a TV with ARC, there is an optical input. Additionally, there is a USB port to play MP3 files, Bluetooth, and a Wi-Fi connection to connect to smart home setups. Via the JBL One app, it is simple to add the bar to those accounts and tell your voice assistant to play music on it. The best part is that the bar does not even have to be turned on to start playing. Simply make the request, and it turns on to play. Keep in mind that the soundbar itself does not have a microphone for voice assistants. In case someone wonders, it does have a microphone, but that is strictly used for the calibration process after placing the rear speakers in the room. If you don’t have a voice assistant, you can still use the app to stream music from your phone via Wi-Fi, or you can connect the phone itself via Bluetooth – whatever is more convenient. When it comes to inputs, my only complaint is the lack of an analog input for older devices. My parents would not be able to easily connect their record player to this bar. In my case, I have one modern TV with HDMI-ARC, but I have another one that does not have ARC or optical out. Without a converter, that TV cannot connect to this bar. Of course, one could also argue that it is not reasonable to pair an old TV with a soundbar of this high quality. Control is simple via a very sleek, easy-to-use infrared remote control. There are not many buttons. The few that exist have various shapes, which makes it simple to use without having to look at the remote in a dark room. This is also a great feature for someone with vision impairment. In addition to the remote, the identical buttons, plus additional features, are present in the JBL One app. The app found the bar instantly and immediately upgraded the software of the bar to the latest edition. My one and only complaint is that this update process took over 10 minutes, and it ties up both the bar and the phone while it is occurring. It initially said it would take 17 minutes, but it thankfully moved a little faster than that. One would expect a faster update process with brand-new technology connected to a 1 Gbps internet connection. With updates being the only annoyance, I still love this soundbar. It sounds amazing, is easy to use, and has some great features, especially when it comes to integrating with smart home speakers.

Being a long time fan of soundbars it might just be one of my favorite things. Home entertainment has always been at the top of my wish list. I went through a period in my life that I actually returned to many soundbars because I could never find the perfect one. Along with this JBL I have another high end 7.4.1 soundbar system that we use daily. This JBL 1000 soundbar came in a beat up box and I was worried the unit was damaged on the inside. After unboxing, everything was safely packed. Actually overly packed but I was relieved by that due to the way the carrier treated the box. Set up is straightforward and you have many connections to chose from including optical and three HDMI ports with one EARC connection. The bar comes with detachable surround speakers and a down firing 10” sub. The surrounds last approx 10 hours when removed or can be charged with a usbc charger. The system outputs 880 watts which was more than enough to fill our large living room with sound. I recommend you use the app on your phone but it comes with a remote and downloading the app isn’t required. During testing I blasted Top Gun maverick for my atmos testing. This JBL 1000 did not disappoint. I could hear the jets flying up and down long with front to back. The vertical sounds were better than expected and the rears have upward firing mids to slam down the effect. The sub is big and usually down firing speakers get a lot of rattle but the insulation on this sub is superb. Nothing near by rattled but I felt the deep bass in my chest. On to the music I was impressed that the system connects to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth because I prefer the Wi-Fi connection. I listened to a few songs and was a little sad about the mid range. I missed details in some songs and it was a loud deep and pitchy sound at higher volumes. You can adjust but I never got it perfect. Even with the missing mid range our home was filled with sound and it wasn’t a bad experience. Most people who listen to music periodically would be happy with the deep bass and full sound you get. Overall I think this is a fantastic home theater system worth seriously considering.

I have been enjoying this soundbar since setting it up a little more than a week ago. It is paired up to a LG CX OLED and replaced a Sony 5.1.2 sound bar set-up that I've been using since 2021. Overall I have been impressed with the sound quality and in particular the bass output of this system. Voices are extremely clear and easy to understand, the treble isn't ear piercing and is well balanced, and the powered sub actually provides some nice boom boom. Weak bass output was my main complaint about the previous Sony set-up, and this fairly beefy powered sub does a significantly better job of moving air. There is some adjustment available with the included remote, but not full EQ functionality. The available JBL app does give you the ability to adjust bass, mid, and treble individually but that's it as far at tuning goes. It provides a nice "Dolby Atmos" experience but don't expect the same results as if you actually did a proper set-up with speakers in your ceiling. With that being said unless you have an exceptionally large space, this kit will easily flood your room with high quality audio. One unique feature that this set-up offers is detachable rear surround speakers. It uses magnets to secure to the main bar, and this will allow you to use the bar as a large single front channel or you can remove them and have a more traditional surround sound set-up. The system is completely wireless, however each speaker has a USB-C port for charging if you elect to mount them effectively making them a "wired" speaker. At first I was skeptical of this type of functionality but it seems to work well and only time will tell if the batteries become an issue. This is a unique and effective way to allow users to gain a better surround sound experience without having to permanently mount the speakers if they don't want, just return them to the main bar after your movie is over. If you are looking in this price bracket the JBL BAR 1000 is a great option to consider and I would definitely recommend it.

The soundbar for rooms w/o space for rear channels

When I first learned of this soundbar, I felt it was made exactly for my family room. I like to have surround sound, but the shape of my room doesn’t allow for speaker placement behind the sofa. With the JBL 1000 soundbar, the wireless and battery powered rear channels were perfect for my setup! Unboxing and setup: The box is rather large and fairly heavy, this is of course, due to the subwoofer. Included is everything you need to get started including wall mounts, brackets (for soundbar), power cords and even an HDMI cable. Also included are end caps for the soundbar and the detachable speakers. With these end caps, it hides the charging connectors and gives it a nice, polished look. Downlaod the JBL One app to setup the soundbar ony our netowkr. Once this is done, you can AirPlay and login your smart assistants on the speaker. There are 2 ways you can connect this to your TV, via Bluetooth or HDMI using the audio return channel or “ARC”. Newer TV’s should support this, the HDMI port that supports this should be clearly labeled in the back of your TV. In my case, my Samsung TV uses HDMI port 4 for ARC. I tried both connections and it worked. Powering on the TV also powered on the soundbar. Setup was simple, the speakers found the subwoofer and the rear channels easily, I didn’t have to do anything aside from plugging it into power and powering on. One all the speakers have been placed, run it through the calibration to complete your setup. I think the design is simple and would blend in well with many living spaces, but the subwoofer may stand out as it’s fairly large. Sound quality: Once everything was connected, I was able to control the volume using my (Samsung) TV remote control. If I wanted to adjust the sound level of the subwoofer or the rear channel, I had to use the included JBL remote. I found the sound quality to be very good. The movie really comes alive with the added center channel and the bass! The rear channels come alive when you have a F1 car drive from the front to back or scenes from Top Gun where a plane flies from back to front! The TV experience is so much more immersive with a decent surround sound than watching with just TV speakers or a 2 channel soundbar! I have other sound bars, albeit at a lower price point, that don’t include rear channels, those are good, but I find it just makes the volume louder and adds murky bass. After using the rear speakers for a week, they still didn’t need to be recharged. My only minor complaint is I felt the audio quality of the center channel, where a lot of the conversations usually take place, could be more clear. Compared to my in-wall speaker/receiver system, it sounded more clear to me, but I’m having issues with that system, hence the soundbar. Overall I found this to be a versatile soundbar with very good overall audio quality and features. It offers a solution for my family room that other soundbars cannot. You won’t be disappointed with this unit.

This is a fantastic soundbar with so many possibilities. By itself it puts out great sound for any decent size room, but once you charge the detachable side speakers (they are battery operated so you don't need to plug them in besides charging) and run the Calibration process (which is really easy to do), you have a pretty decent surrround sound setup. From unboxing, this was really easy to setup. The subwoofer comes pre-paired from the factory (you actually can't mix and match subwoofers of the same model with the soundbar and vice-versa), so no need to go through what could be a frustrating pairing process. The setup of the soundbar was also really easy. I plugged it into the wall, then plugged an HDMI cable into my TV's ARC port and into the soundar, and then from my source devices to the soundar, and I was ready to go. The audio sync worked really well out of the box too, although I ran my device's wireless audio sync process anyway. I was also able to pair the soundbar to my phone's app really easily and run through the firmware update process. Everything can be controlled from the included remote or through the app, but the ARC control works really well so I only need the one remote from my source device. The sound quality is amazing too - I actually turned down the bass as it was it times overpowering. I didn't see any option to raise the volume of voices over the bass and treble, but this was easily solved by lowering the bass. Playing music through the soundbar also sounds fantastic. Placing the right and left rear detachable speakers behind creates what feels like a true surround sound experience. Overall, this is a great setup and I hightly recommend it.

This soundbar has exceeded any expectations I have for it. The sound is amazing and the detachable rear speakers are great in creating a surround experience. They rear speakers aren't very loud but when placed in the proper place which is parallel to you to the sides, they really create the surround sound 7.1 that is advertised. The only thing about them is that I wish they can be just a little bit more louder but otherwise, they work great. The wireless subwoofer is AMAZING. The rumble it creates and the sound is very good and deep. It doesn't sound very muffled when playing some lower end stuff. It plays the lower end very clearly. Set up is also very easy. It's literally plug and play. The HDMI arc works well for me and the HDMI inputs also output 4K so I lose nothing there either. The bluetooth connection is very good and has no delay for me. The Google Home connection is nice to have and I have played Spotify through it and it works great. You can wake up the soundbar through your Google Home and I think that's a nice addition.

Let me begin by saying I’m not a soundbar type of guy. I prefer high-powered separates, with the ability to adjust timing, power, frequencies, et cetera. That being said, I’ve been immensely impressed with an older Samsung soundbar system, despite never being able to get the rear surrounds to work correctly. Therefore, when this JBL system came available, I decided to see if it would be an “upgrade”, considering the increased subwoofer size, detachable surround speakers, and the sheer size of the center channel. It was a smart move on my part that I did, but, then again, I’m a pretty smart guy, if I do say so myself. Just ask me! This system rocks, to put it in as few words as possible. From the initial unpacking to the final calibration to firing it up and putting it through its paces, JBL still knows what they’re doing when it comes to making high-quality speaker systems. Unboxing was very easy. While the overall box was the weird all-in-one, lopsided, bottom-heavy affair that most manufacturers use to avoid having their product in separate, dedicated boxes, the instructions for maneuvering it and opening it were very clearly illustrated on the outside, allowing for quick alignment to start the process. The flaps came apart very easily (pleasant surprise), and, despite the subwoofer end being heavily taped due to its size and weight, even that portion was easily opened. Everything lifted out with no issues, although the “accessories” packet, which contained the power cables, start-up instructions, and mounting kits, almost hit the floor as the cardboard packing it was cradled in tipped ever so slightly, allowing it to fall out. The set-up process was the only part where I had some choice words that I made my poor wife suffer to hear, due to lack of clarity in the instructions. I elected to keep the soundbar on my T.V. console, rather than do a wall mount, although this may change once I upgrade my television. This eliminated a lot of the set-up process, as I didn’t have to worry about the whole hole-drilling thing. It was very nice, however, that a template was provided for marking and drilling the mounting holes. My main complaint here is that there isn’t any type of labelling, or clear instructions, on what the separate parts were for. I’m assuming they are for wall-mounting, which if that’s the case, is also impressive for the attention to detail, as some of the extra parts are rubber isolators. I’m also not sure as to whether the rear speakers are able to be wall-mounted, or even how to position them for the best sound. For the time being, I’ve kept the surround speakers attached to the soundbar. Having them magnetically attached, allowing for wireless set-up and playback, is a genius design. It also makes it extremely easy to remove and reposition whenever I’m feeling froggy. Once I made some educated decisions, however (we’ve already established I’m a smart guy), set-up was very straightforward. Make the usual HDMI connection, re-route the cabling for the new power cable, and go! Part of the process is the requirement to download the JBL One app. I saw that and inwardly groaned. Anything that requires Bluetooth and account creation and synchronization and whatnot hardly ever works, in my experience. JBL proved me wrong again. Getting the app, creating my account, and linking my soundbar was painless. Even going through the calibration of the room via speaker playback was easy. My wife thought I was being sucked through a portal to another world as she could hear the tones but didn’t understand the context. Finally, there was the payoff. The larger size of the subwoofer makes a visually arresting statement in the room, and it reproduces ridiculously low frequencies. The soundbar itself, including the attached surround speakers, reproduces a very full spectrum of sound. I don’t have to raise the volume nearly as much as I did with the old system, and it’s much clearer and fuller. It also is less of a point-source as the old system, meaning it feels (and sounds) like the sound is coming from the T.V., and not a speaker underneath. In summary, I’m glad I got this system, and I would highly recommend it to anyone considering it. From the ease of set-up to what it sounds like, the JBL Bar 1000 is well worth the investment. I wish the manufacturer would have made the installation pieces a bit clearer as to what they were or what they went to, and the instructions could have been a bit clearer themselves, but it does not detract from the final outcome.

The JBL - BAR 1000 7.1.4-channel soundbar offers impressive sound quality and offers a sweet trick with its battery powered detachable surround speakers. It claims 880 watts of total output power and provides satisfying bass from a 10" wireless subwoofer. The sound volume is more than adequate for my listening room although it does start to distort if you get too zealous with the volume. The unit is securely packaged and everything you need to get started is in the box (including wall mount hardware if that is your preference). The included remote is very good and gives you access to functions like calibration and volume for the rear surrounds that is absolutely necessary to fine tune the experience while in your preferred seating spot. Setup and start-up were are simple as can be thanks to the wireless connectivity for the surrounds and the subwoofer. All units synced immediately and with no fuss. The JBL One app was easy to install. It automatically connected the soundbar to my WiFi with no problems and provided a solid Bluetooth connection as well. I want to commend JBL for updating their WiFi to support the 5GHz band. Many of my home connected devices insist on running at 2.4GHz and that is getting increasingly painful and crowded. Kudos, JBL/Harman! Then the unit detected that a firmware update was needed and offered to proceed with the download and installation. I agreed and that's when the problems started. After several minutes the update announced that it had failed and wanted to know if I wanted to try again. Again, I agreed, and the update proceeded to fail repeatedly. This was regardless of whether I used the app or let the unit download directly via WiFi. So I dived into the website for support and after much searching around found the area that offered to download the latest firmware so that I could do an update via USB. The only problem - there were four different updates offered and it wasn't clear which one I needed. Furthermore, according to the documentation, the latest version was the one I already had running on the soundbar! Long story short - JBL's tech support site needs work. I did finally find someone who was able to help me and now have the latest software running. On a positive note - this device is really quite feature rich! It decodes both Dolby ATMOS and DTS:X which is exactly what I needed since I have both formats in my BluRay library. I also was able to stream music from my cellphone and was quite impressed with how the soundbar was able to fill-in and sweeten the notoriously compressed audio from the Internet. I found the sound to be balanced and the whole system punches above its weight given how compact everything is. A bit about the detachable speakers - after calibration I was very impressed at how they filled out the surround space. The volume was more than sufficient and the separation is quite impressive. The detachable/battery powered element puzzles me a bit and I can imagine future hassles. I am used to finding the sweet spot for my speakers and then leaving them in place. The need to re-dock them to recharge is going to be a bit of a hassle. Although JBL states that you can plug the rear speakers into USB chargers so that they do not have to be moved, they do not provide bricks or cables and I was unable to locate specs or a link to purchase them separately. In conclusion, I don't want to end with a negative. I am truly impressed by the sound and the feature set. This device is perfect for anyone with a smaller space or perhaps someone who rents and doesn't want to drill holes in the wall to set up surround sound. You won't be disappointed!

OMG!!!! This is the best soundbar/subwoofer JBL 1000 out there. I brought the JBL 500 first and had to take it back cause the subwoofer would not come on after 1 day use. Must have been defective. So I hooked the 1000 up easily and the sound that came out of it was AWESOME!!! Felt like I was in an imax theater. I have a 450 sq ft room and it filled the whole room. I say this is a must buy especially if you have a big room. Best Buy salesman say Sonos is the best but when I heard the Sonos compared to the JBL 1000 the 1000 sounded so much better. I truly recommend this product!!!

One year later, this sound bar still operates and sounds wonderful Before this purchase, JBL was a company that I had never heard of, but I will now keep an eye out for their products. It really is an awesome purchase. My mother is old, but she was shocked by the subwoofer. I simply turn it off when she is watching
