    Dreadful sound quality, unworkable controls

JBL has long had a reputation for producing products that feature top quality sound but they really dropped the ball with these Endurance Peak ear buds. They are just plain bad. In fact, I would argue they produce the worst sound I have ever heard from any earbud. Completely devoid of any depth or richness. Zero highs or lows. Just a thin midrange. Expect a flat hollow, harsh sound akin to the worst laptop computer speakers you have have ever heard. Or if you are old enough, maybe a 1960's era transistor radio -- playing AM. I tried these using both Apple and Android devices to ensure the music source was not the problem. They were not. Although my trusty old iPod Touch produced much more volume than my more modern Samsung Galaxy phone, sound quality was so bad across the board so you probably want to avoid high volume anyway. If all you plan to use these for is phone calls, I suppose they would work OK (if you can get the controls to work). But for music, they are unacceptable, even at this relatively low price point. Speaking of controls, they are a complete disaster too. The device is supposed to be all touch, using some combination of sliding and touching and tapping certain parts of the right earpiece. Just figuring all that out was bad enough, using the dreadful instructions that come with the earbuds. There are no markings on the earbuds themselves to indicate where you are supposed to tap touch or slide. The worst part was I never could get the controls to work, even after carefully studying the instructions. The best I could do was to get songs to pause. Volume up and down never worked. Skipping tracks never worked. On and off never work. Major fail. I also had the same problem many others have reported, where the left bud disconnects from the right one. This was intermittent and happened for no apparent reason. And stopped happening for no apparent reason. I could usually get the left bud to reconnect by first placing it in the charging case, which seemed to reset it (red light comes on) . Then pulling it out and letting it try to reconnect. The only good thing I can say about the Endurance Peak is the auto bluetooth pairing for the first device worked well (pairing a second device, however is much more of a challenge since it involves touch controls). And the buds fit nicely in a well-designed compact charging case, which is included. However the package does not come with the USB AC adapter needed for actually charging them. So you better have one of those. As for the overall design of the buds themselves, that's a mixed bag. Some people will probably like the big clunky form factor, which makes it unlikely you would ever lose them like some tiny wireless earbuds. They rest in the ear OK but require and odd twisting motion to get them in. I generally dislike earbuds because I find them uncomfortable. These are better than most The package comes with multiple ear canal tips from small to large which helps you get the right fit. But I still found them taxing over the long haul. The Endurance Peak is billed as a workout earbud and is designed NOT to fall out during vigorous activity. Since there is hook that wraps around your ear, it succeeds on that front at least. So if that is your main concern, and you care nothing about sound quality, I guess they would work for you. If you can get the controls to work. And the two buds to stay connected. In the end, sound quality is the most important factor in any earbud. Any product that fails on that front is not worth buying in my view. And this one fails spectacularly. On not just that level but pretty much every level.

These are a good choice for gym use and running, but there are better options for people who just want quality wireless earbuds. I had no problems with connectivity, and the sound was better than I expected for in-ear wireless headphones. Music reproduction was actually better than a typical wired earbud set, which of course in this age of no-phono-plug-in-flagship-cellphones is a strong recommendation in its own right. Be warned, though - these will not last through the day. I maxed out at five hours on a full charge, but that was with consistent audio playback. These headphones are comfortable, and I didn't have any issues twisting the curved hooked pieces into place behind my comparatively large ears (think Tony Blair), so these will certainly not rub you the wrong way if worn for a long workout session. Where I ran into trouble was with the incredibly sensitive touch controls. These work best if you configure your volume first and then "set and forget." Adjustments to audio are made by touching certain designated portions of one of the earbuds, but these controls aren't very tactile and it's extremely easy to accidentally gloss over two or three discrete functions when just trying to lower the volume. Perhaps as your fingers build up muscle memory these mistakes become less frequent, but I experienced considerable difficulty finding the right touch sensitive area to do something like lower the volume. In short, these are recommended for people with athletic inclinations who just want a quality headset to last for a good workout. If you need long battery life, or like mixes of music that feature peaks and valleys in volume, you're better served by something else.

There are factors we need to consider as to why charging stops with your JBL Endurance Peak. This is sometimes caused by dirt on the metal charging contacts. These are usually gold plated, but gold plating does not prevent surface dirt. We recommend cleaning the contact pins with a cotton swab and alcohol to remove any dirt. Make sure the unit is dry before charging. You can also try using a different charging cable to charge the case.
