This review is for the JBL MA710, 7.2-Channel 8K AC Receiver. Although I have not experienced every available receiver on the market, I can say with all certainty that it would be improbable that I could find a better receiver than the MA710. For over 70 years, audiophiles have consistently chosen Harman products because of their undeniable high quality. The MA710 is simply an extension of their commitment to provide superior sound experiences, not just for the “average” person, but also for the high-level sound enthusiast. I was pleased as I began unpackaging the MA710 as it was quite apparent that much thinking and development had been employed to make sure that even under the most extreme shipping processes, the receiver would arrive at its destination in undamaged and perfect working order. I was also pleased to see that JBL utilized the least amount of packaging materials possible to lessen the impact on the environment. The perfect marriage of thoughtfulness and utility. The box contains the receiver, power cord, Quick Start Guide/Safety Sheet, Remote Control with batteries included, and three antennas – one for Bluetooth, and two for Wi-Fi. Before unpacking the MA710, I had already mapped out a rough plan for placement of all the components and had prepared accordingly. Because you are reading a review for a very high-quality receiver, I don’t think I need to stress how important this is. After unpackaging and placing the receiver in its correct location, I began familiarizing myself with the unit. JBL kept the design of the MA710 elegantly simple. It has a rather simple-looking display…lighted blue lettering against a black background. As undistracting as possible. Across the face of the MA710 there is a limited number of buttons. I find I am quite happy with this. I am one of those who believes the less complicated a device is to navigate, the better. There is the Power button, a Back button for going back to previous menus, etc., a Menu button, a display Dim button (display off, and two intensity settings), and two Surround mode buttons for navigating back and forth between the various audio output options. The unit also has two knobs, Input and Volume. The back of the unit is a bit more complex. Inputs include USB x 1, Ethernet Socket x 1, Phono and Ground x 1 each, Analog x 4, Coax x 1, Optical x 1, and HDMI x 6. Outputs of course include all the speaker outputs including the subwoofer output, HDMI output x 1, and a “Party” output. When I first saw the Ground connector, I wondered why the unit would have to be grounded, but then I realized that because of the possibility of “noise” from the phono input, one had to be included. So, having unpacked the unit, properly placing it in its spot, and going over/through all the various menu options, it was time to put it to the test. This is where it gets a bit murky. It would be impossible to test it without speakers. And then of course, the sound results will depend on the quality of the choice of speakers. Thankfully I was able to test the unit out using the JBL Stage2 280F Dual 8” Floorstanding Loudspeaker x 2, Stage2 240H Dolby Atmos Enabled Height Module x2, Stage2 250B Dual 5.25” Bookshelf Speakers x 2, Stage2 245C Center Channel Loudspeaker, and the Stage2 200P 10” 300W Powered Subwoofer. Setting up the speakers was the most time-consuming part of the entire setup. There are three types of connectors you can use for connecting the speakers to the unit… “Banana” clips, “Spade” clips, and of course bare-wire. I opted for the bare wire only because I did not want to make another run into town after going to BestBuy to purchase speaker wire. (A 40-minute one-way journey!). After spending the better part of the day cutting and running wire after placing all the speakers in their respective locations, and connecting everything, it was time to see just how spectacular the MA710 really is. As I said before, it is an absolute to download the JBL app. This is where JBL gets their first accolade. After going through the setup process, I began exploring the app. I was (and still am) dumbstruck with all the included free radio and podcast stations!! I’m serious… there is something for everyone, every kind of music genre, and podcasts covering everything from history to the occult. I have discovered genres and topics I didn’t even know existed. All of this for free!! THANK YOU JBL!! But the app isn’t only about the music and podcasts, it is also important for setting up the unit, downloading and installing updates, and so forth. Not only is this where I give JBL such great props, it is also where I have to mention the first bothersome aspect of the app. The app basically has no onboard controls for managing the sound. That is to say, you cannot do any of the technical speaker setups, and there is no equalizer for various music genres. I suppose this would have made the app much more difficult to construct, but it is still disappointing that in spite of all the great things offered via the app, it is so lacking in other areas. Although in reality it is possible to simply connect all the speakers and start listening, without utilizing the detailed setup functions it would be impossible to enjoy an optimal well-tuned listening experience. But to put this theory to the test, I did exactly that… I began listening/experiencing the MA710 without going through the speaker setup. I chose to connect a BlueRay player to the unit and watch a movie that I experienced for the first time in an IMAX cinema. I have watched this particular movie many times using various soundbars w/subwoofers. Although for home the experiences were okay, they were never spectacular. So again, without speaker setup, I began watching the video. Holy cow!!! I was taken to a listening place I have never been before! The clarity was astounding, the bass was deep and trembling making even the floor vibrate. I began increasing the volume just to see how far it would go. Now, the Volume control will go to 99. I had it up to 79 and had to tap out. And what was so remarkable about this is that there was not even one hint of distortion, not one bit of squelch, feedback, fuzziness…nothing! How could this be? Because like I said when I first began this review, audio connoisseurs have been choosing JBL (Harman-Kardon) for over 70 years, and for this very reason. In all honesty, I wasn’t sure how it could get any better. I also tried out several music tracks covering multiple genres, and the results were just as good. I could tell that some of the sound was a bit off-kilter, and so afterward I chose to go through the speaker setup process. I think you should be forewarned; the speaker setup was a bit tedious for me. This is because I had to do it all using the MA710 display. This is where an app version would be so welcome. JBL strongly recommends utilizing an OSD using a TV or computer monitor. Although I connected the unit to a newer 4K smart TV, there is no option for OSD (On Screen Display). I even tried using a computer monitor, but no success. I’m sure it is probably something simple, but I just could not figure out how to access the OSD functionality of the TV or monitor…even after an exhausting search of the internet. During the setup, you will go over each specific speaker, its placement, and exact distance measurements. After inputting all this data, the sound will be calibrated and will deliver a customized sound imaging experience. So, after some time I concluded the setup along with all the other recommended setups and tried out the unit again. Now, this wasn’t a matter of splitting technical hairs, so to speak, but it was a tangible distinction between the simple “plug and play” experience and the tuned programmed experience. A triple “Holy Cow!!!” The delivery became other-worldly, and I heard sounds and variations I had absolutely not heard before while watching this particular video. “Tings” of a ring hitting a stone that filled the room whereas before it was simply interesting. Voice inflections, circumferent wind sounds…everything was, well, perfect! This simply would not be possible if JBL had not invested itself deeply in ensuring that those who purchased the MA710 discovered a listening world they may not ever have experienced before. I can say this is true for me. Other than the app demerits (and the subsequent setup difficulties), there is nothing negative I can say about the MA710 7.2-Channel AV Receive with Dolby Atmos. Can you spend more money on a competitor’s brand? Sure. But you will not enjoy a better listening experience. As far as I am concerned, if you are serious about upping your home theater/music-listening experience, the JBL MA710 is the way to go.

First impression: My first impression of the JBL MA-710 7.2 channel 8K AV receiver is that it is an attractive, well-made product. The front of the unit is a minimalistic design, with a glass front, 2 large knobs, 5 small buttons, and a fluorescent display. The back of the unit is full of connection points. I especially like that the Speaker connection use binding post with dust caps. Nice touch! The MA-710 does not include an AM or FM tuner. This is not an issue in my case, as I haven’t listened to AM/FM radio in my house for years. With Netflix, YouTube, and Apple Music being streamed, there just isn’t any reason for me to. But I thought I would mention it as I know some people still do use tuners. What’s in the Box: • 1 x MA-710 AV Receiver • 1 x IR Remote • 2 x AAA batteries • 1 x Bluetooth antenna • 2 x Wi-Fi antenna • 1 x Power Cord • 1 x Quick-Start Guide • 1 x Safety Sheet Technical Specifications: • HDMI eARC: Yes • HDMI Audio Return Channel: Yes • 8K HDMI input connectors: 3 • 4K HDMI input connectors: 3 • HDR 10+, Dolby Vision: Yes, Yes • File format: MP3 / MPEG-4 AAC • Pure Analog: Yes • EZ Set EQ: Yes • Front channel bi-amp: Yes • Digital signal processing: up to 24-bit/192kHz • HDMI Input/Output: 6/ 1 • Wi-Fi: Yes (2.4/5GHz) • Bluetooth receiver: Yes (v5.3, Low Energy, APTX HD, APTX Adaptive) • Digital Audio Input: 1 Coax, 1 Optical, 1 USB • Stereo analog input: 2 single-ended RCA, 1 MM Phono input + Ground • Pre-Out (single ended RCA): Stereo Zone 2, Subwoofer 1, Subwoofer 2 • Ethernet: RJ45 Gigabit, WiFi Onboard • Mains voltage: 110 – 240V, 50–60Hz • Max. power consumption: 500W • Standby power consumption: <0.5W • Channels: 7.2 • Rated Power @ 8Ω: 110 Watts RMS • Rated Power @ 4Ω: 160 Watts RMS • Dimensions: 4.3” H x 17.0” W x 13.7” D • Weight: 13.8lb (6.3kg) Setup: Setup for the JBL MA-710 is done with 2 apps, the JBL Premium Audio app and the EZ EQ app for room balancing. Both apps worked flawlessly on my Samsung S22 Ultra. I had the MA-710 set up within minutes, and the room balanced in about 15. Performance: For the test, I started with music, streaming Apple Music through my 4K Apple TV for my source. I played various genres to see how it would respond to each. I used easy listening and instrumental to see how accurate the amp is. I used hip-hop and funk to see how it would respond to low bass, and I used EDM to see if the device would respond quickly to the popping bass, and if it had enough power behind it to not get bogged down. I took this genre and ran the volume way up, much louder than comfortable. The MA-710 handled each test with ease. I then switched to classic rock and metal to see how the sound was with grinding guitars. Again, the MA-710 sounded amazing. The sound of each song I listened to was just as I remember it from the 70’s – current. I started this testing of this unit using my Bowers and Wilkens 685 S2 speakers. The results were amazing. I haven’t heard them sound this good ever. And the nice thing is that it took lower power to get them to open up than I usually need. I then switched over to the JBL Stage 2 260F floor standing speakers. Again, the sound was exceptional. I left these speakers on for the video test. For the video test, I used Netflix as the source. I ran through about 10 movies, ranging from action, sci-fi, thrillers and dramas. Every single movie looked and sounded great. In the action movies, the bass from the explosions held up great, sounding like an explosion should sound, and never showing any signs of a lack of power to handle them. When playing Guardians of the Galaxy, the colors were great, the bass was low and tight, all the colors were accurate, and the video never showed any signs of not being able to handle the fast scenes and quick scene changes. Conclusion: I have heard more than my fair share of integrated amplifiers in the MA-710’s price range that had good sound but sounded similar across a wide range of genres. This is not the case with the JBL MA-710. It reproduced the sound of each genre accurately, so each sounded great, but also sounded like it was supposed to. The JBL MA-710 is an outstanding amp at a good price. To be honest, I didn’t expect to be this happy with it. It has plenty of power, sound from multiple sources sounded great, video was better than expected, and the colors never failed to impress. For me, the apps worked perfectly, and with 3 8K HDMI inputs, I am ready for the products when I upgrade. I would normally take a 5 star down to a 4 if a significant piece was not included, such as an AM/FM tuner. But for me, and I think for a lot of people, I don’t know if I can consider a tuner significant in today’s entertainment equipment. I have sold my Magnum Dynalab tuner, because it just sat in my media center untouched. So, I am not taking this into consideration for this review. If you want an attractive, great sounding 8K integrated amplifier and don’t need a tuner, then I highly recommend the JBL MA-710 7.2ch 8K AV receiver, you won’t be disappointed.

Right out of the box, I had some positive thoughts about this unit. It has that weight to it. Not that it is heavy, but that feels good in the hand, well-built feel, weight. Beyond that, I really like the design. Black. Clean. Minimalistic. Some might say plain. Simple. For me, just about perfect (I really would have preferred not to have the volume dial “11” humor). Looking deeper, it’s more of the same. I really appreciate the robust input and output options. Given this is the centerpiece of my home theater, connected to my computer and more or less where I am consuming most of my media, having it all centralized is really what I was looking for. Phono, Analog, HDMI (would have loved all 6 being 2.1), eARC, Optical, Streaming, Speakers, etc…are all there. Further, the connections all seem high quality. Oddly, or perhaps this is norm these days, the one thing not included here is an AM/FM tuner. Given all of the streaming options, maybe that is the thinking here? I mean, for me, I don’t “really” use a tuner, but I would like it there. I can not imagine it is a high cost? It just seems an odd omission and something to note. The setup for me was not that bad but did require a bit of time. You will need two separate apps (why not one?), JBL Premium Audio as well as EZ EQ. While I don’t think they are the most intuitive apps, they do get the job done. I do absolutely think you should spend the time with them and dial in everything to your liking. Both on the sound end, as well as getting everything balanced correctly. It really will help you get the most of this unit and your system as a whole. Take the time. As for performance, I am very pleased. This is all paired with a 7.1 speaker system that, while I really get after with some music, is mainly put together for me to enjoy movies. That said, I think the music sound quality is quite good. It definitely has power behind it. Beyond that though, everything was accurate, with clean low end, nice mids, and crips but not piercing highs. Vocals came to life. I will say the sound was perhaps a little more neutral, and didn’t have a warmth to it, which, I know is subjective, and hard to get across or explain, but just something I felt and wanted to note. Movie wise? I could not be happier. Everything simply sounded (and looked) great. Every genre, style, source. Everything. Crisp. Clear. Clean. Responsive. Accurate. Powerful. As a whole, this system has delivered the best home movie viewing experiences I have had to date, all due to the sound. There was a whole new level of immersion, texture, and life to the films. The clarity, amount, and presence of sound really made a difference for me. I was both a little surprised, as well as very happy. In the end, I really like this unit and think for all it offers it is a very good value. While I really don’t understand the lack of tuner, the need for two apps, and do not love the remote, this receiver does everything else right for me. It looks good, is well-built, has great connectivity, performs very well, and has brought movies more to life and enhanced that experience for me.

The JBL MA710 is a sleek, clean-looking A/V receiver with bold knobs and an easy to see display. As good as it looks, it sounds even better! This is a 7.2 channel receiver with 110 watts/channel (at 8ohms) so it provides plenty of power for a crisp/clear sound. It can also be used as a 5.1 receiver reserving the other two channels for "party zone" - sound in another room. It sounds great at low-volume, and has enough "oomph" when you want it. The unit has six HDMI inputs - 3 for 8k, and 3 for 4k - as well as an ARC HDMI output. It also has inputs for ethernet, USB, phono, and outputs for two subwoofers. It supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding for realistic cinema sound. Setting the unit up was easy using the menu (easiest when you view on your TV). As a class D amplifier, it uses less energy and produces more power out of that energy, while operating cooler. At just a little over 4" tall, it takes up less space as well! After making all of my connections (including 2 JBL260F speakers) I really enjoyed the EZ EQ set up app. Simply open the app and it identifies your system and knows which speakers are connected. Using my IPhone's microphone (Android requires a separate mic) I simply walked around the room while the app analyzed the sound from each set of speakers. It then creates a graph showing what the app "heard" and what it recommends. Push "enable" and the sound characteristics are changed. You can do this for each set of speakers and afterwards compare the difference. I was surprised to discover there wasn't an FM tuner but with so many options for streaming, I understand why. There is also as free JBL Premium Audio app that allows you to select your streaming device including internet free radio and your phone can be used as your remote. With built-in Wifi, Bluetooth, Google Cast, and Apple Airplay, it's easy to choose your streaming choice. I set up this system to replace a 5.1 system that was about 8 years old and what an improvement! The sound is incredible, the bass really booms, and watching a movie is almost like being in the theatre. I'm not an audiophile who can describe all of the frequencies and why something sounds good. I just know that the JBL MA710 is an absolutely incredible A/V receiver that looks great and sounds even better.

I've been looking for an A/V receiver that checks a bunch of boxes and have had a hard time finding one that offers great amplification, multiple inputs, and high tech network streaming. This receiver almost checks all those boxes and I'm very happy with it. The build quality alone is great. There disks work great and flow effortlessly. The glass front makes it look very high quality and looks great in you're entertainment space. The number of inputs it's amazing, you can run 7.2 or if this unit with Atmos height speakers as well. It has a plethora of inputs, ranging from 6 HDMI inputs, 8k support, analog audio, phono input, and a range of network and Bluetooth inputs. The flexibility of this system offers almost everything you could need from a unit. The setup unfortunately was not a great experience. You need to use an app to set up your device and I had a lot of problems getting the device to connect to my phone and had to turn off the device several time to get it working. My unit had to I stall a huge update right out of the box so I'm assuming that is what was causing all the issues. None the less it was by far an easy setup process. The network audio feature for Chromecast and airplay was one thing I was looking forward to. Not many amplifiers support this feature and even fewer with multiple outputs. Airplay works flawlessly, better than any airplay device I've used. Chromecast on the other hand is unusable on my device. Chromecast appears to think the device is connected, but after many unpairings and resets, I've yet to be able to connect and play music via Chromecast to this receiver. This was my biggest disappointment. The sound quality being pushed by this unit is great. It has plenty of power to push to my system and has never seemed to drop. Overall I think this is a great centerpiece to your home theater set up.

Wonderfully Performing and Versatile A/V Receiver

For many years a solid A/V receiver was the core of my entertainment system. I had a wonderful Onkyo that lasted me as a teen until the HD age. I then moved on to a Yamaha that never quite wowed me. I used it for years but eventually I just moved onto sound bars as my job began requiring me to move every year or so and it was just easier. But I always longed to once again have a state of the art A/V unit with quality speakers to try and get back to more of a true theatrical experience when I watch a movie. I recently acquired an amazing set of JBL Stage2 260F Loudspeakers and once paired with this unit, the experience is mind-blowing. Set up was quick and easy. I connected my WiFi network to my receiver while I installed the accompanying app on my phone. Pairing was easy and though the app isn’t a necessity for use, I wanted to see what it offered. The music selection thru the app was ok overall but I did enjoy the wide range of classical options. It also can help with optimizing your speaker set up, once I heard it start playing I never felt the need to even mess with anything else. In my current place I will just be using my Samsung 70” 4k TV and the previously mentioned JBL loudspeakers and my PS5. I am really excited however once I move back to my house, and where I will live out the rest of my days, to combine this unit with my projector and take full advantage of the surround sound along with my subwoofers. As fantastic as it sounds now, I can only imagine how absolutely incredible it will be once fully utilizing the 7.2 Dolby Atmos full surround sound. It is also very pleasing aesthetically , the unit is very clean looking up front and has every port and hookup I could ask for. Once everything was set up and I hit play on that first movie, the magic really started to happen. The sound is so much more clear and crisp than my previous Yamaha unit. I could often detect the slightest hiss in the background with that device. My girlfriend could never hear it and thought I may be hearing things but it is not present at all with this set up. Everything sounds great. The video looks amazing and I like that this system has room to grow with 8k compatibility. Even at high volumes the audio is very clear, clean and crisp. Even just watching YouTube videos of animals barking or howling gets a bigger reaction from our dog! The first movie we watched beginning to end was Oppenheimer and it was an absolutely stunning experience. It really gave that true theatrical experience that I was looking for. All in all I am happy to have returned to the A/V Receiver style set up instead of a sound bar and I am extremely pleased with the quality and versatility of MA 710. I would absolutely recommend it a friend.

So I just received my JBL MA710 r07.2 Channel 8K Receiver a little over a week ago and have been putting it through its paces. From the little bit of research that I could do and find on this receiver, this is more of a budget type receiver for those wanting to get into setting up and home theater without breaking the bank. And thats where this amazingly built JBL MA710 receiver comes in. UNBOXING: * JBL. MA710 7.2 8K Receiver * Quick-Start Guide * Remote Control w/ 2 AA Batteries * 1 Antenna for Bluetooth * 2 Antennas for Wi-Fi * Power Cord So after unboxing everything I unplugged my other receiver, which this JBL will be replacing and connected my banana plugs to the back of this JBL MA710 receiver. Using the included HDMI ports on the back, I connected my Samsung 65” TV, my Apple TV, and my Playstation 5 to the back of it. Once I got everything plugged in I plugged the power cord into the socket and pressed the power button. And nothing happened. At first I was confused as to why it wasn’t working, but then I quickly remembered that this AV receiver has another power button switch on the back panel. Once I press that button on, and pressed the power button on the front panel everything lit up and I was ready to go. First off the display panel is way brighter and larger than the display panel of my other receiver that it’s replacing. That’s the first thing that I noticed about it. Now I will say that I’m not particularly stoked about the remote. I understand making things simple and minimal, and though it’s not a dealbreaker, I don’t really care for how thin and small the remote is. Wish it had a little more heft to it. Again it’s not a dealbreaker as the remote contains all of the functions that you will need to properly run this receiver with no issues. Going through the different menus was easy and actually looked way better than my other receiver. Setup was easy, just use the remote to go through the menu settings and tweak everything to your liking and you’re good. The speakers that I connected to the back of this receiver are my JBL Stage2 260F Floor Standing speakers that I recently received as well. They sound amazing with this receiver, in addition to the other speakers that are included in my surround sound setup. Features I love about this receiver compared to my old receiver is the fact that this receiver has: * Dolby Atmos * Bluetooth * Wired Ethernet port * Wi-Fi * 2 apps (JBL app & EZSetEQ app) Using the apps, will assist in getting you up and running in no time. The JBL app allows your receiver to be recognized and allows you to tweak a few settings remotely and also update the firmware of the receiver. The EZSet EQ app will allow you to calibrate the best possible sound setup. I recommend this receiver for anyone on the market looking for a simple yet robust system without all the fuss of extra buttons and settings that to be honest, aren’t necessary to have. This is an amazing receiver, and I’ve had fun with it so far.

Not for a beginner when it comes to surround. I am using the MA710 in a 5.1 config, and even the Geek Squad had quite a difficult time to set it up, but this is working. Since I have tried to use zone 2 to power my patio speakers, but zero luck getting this to work even after a call with a very nice tech support guy at HC. Sound barely audible on the patio with Party Mode on and Party Mode Vol at 99. Very disappointed since this was the recommended receiver by Best Buy Pro who cam to my house! Any advice to enable Zone 2 much appreciated.

Thought this would crush my almost 10 year old Yamaha receiver. Not even close to the same quality of my old unit. Sound was flat and very thin to my ears. Buggy software. Has Chromecast built in. It would give its little chiming noise to say it was connected, then drop the connection in about 15 seconds. Nothing tried would resolve that. No am fm ability (that was my fault for not noticing). I have had other JBL products I liked, just not this JBL

Bought as Open Box. After setup within 12 hours it stopped working. Nice concept and profile but questionable quality. No problems with return.
