Not as bad as it should've been
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The good: Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Superman (cgi upper lip notwithstanding) The bad: Batman, hacked up Cyborg story, Lois' wig The ugly: The jarring shifts between what was Snyder and what was Whedon makes for a complete Frankenstein's monster of a movie. On paper, this movie should be a complete disaster. And while it comes close, there's enough good (sometimes great) sprinkled in that it just ends up maddeningly disappointing.

One For All and All For Justice
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Since this the Justice League has come out I have heard almost nothing outside of what a horrible movie it is. Recently I have gotten the chance to see it myself and I enjoyed it immensely. Still, I can see where others are coming from. The CGI isn't the greatest, the characters are not what I am used to from the few comics I have read and other movies and shows I have seen in the DC realm and the overall story feels a bit on the generic side. However, even after all the negatives it was a good time. At least better than some of the Marvel movies from Sony. The dialogue was definitely cheesy, which I kind of loved myself. I was especially fond of Barry Allen's one-liners even if the characterization of him felt like some sort of weird mix of Barry and Wally. Batman also felt off, more of how I would expect him to act at the beginning of his career rather than the years of crime fightng he has behind him at the point of this film. I was still rather fond of his portrayal though. Also, Alfred is still a sass master so there is that. In the end, I just adored how fun this movie was. It wasn't deep or revolutionary in the terms of superhero films, but it let me to have roughly 2 hours of mindless entertainment. I can see myself rewatching this movie sometime in the near future.

Good movie
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Best parts of this movie are Superman and Wonder Woman. Still can’t stand Ben Affleck as Bat Man! Every other bat man in the movies fits the bill better than he does.

Better then BvS at Least
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So Justice League. The movie that sank the DCEU. It's not as bad as it sounds to be honest, there are some great parts here. The problem is that they are buried amongst tons of filler, poor CGI, poor characterizations, a laughable plot, and in the end don't feel worth the effort. Still it's probably the best any DC fan is going to get off seeing this pseudo JL team-up, and it could be a lot worse. Better then nothing I guess.

Wasted potential
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There’s no doubt that Zack Snyder’s (and Joss Whedon’s) JUSTICE LEAGUE is deeply flawed and a massive missed opportunity. That being said, it’s not nearly as bad as many would have you believe. As with BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE and SUICIDE SQUAD, it fairly reeks of studio interference and its universe building, which seeks to replicate Marvel’s model, is woefully rushed, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t some fun to be had. Nor does it mean there aren’t some interesting ideas at play. Fair warning, there will be some spoilers below. After Superman’s sacrifice at the end of BvS, the world is starting to tear itself apart. What the general public doesn’t know is that there’s an invasion coming. Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds, who’s given nothing to do in a one dimensional CGI role) and his Parademon minions have been freed after thousands of years from their extradimensional exile. They are seeking three ancient Motherboxes (read: MacGuffins) that will give him the power to take over the world. Dun dun duuuuuun! Of course, Batman (Ben Affleck giving another solid performance as the Dark Knight) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), along with the Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) band together to stop him. They’ll eventually resort to using one of the Motherboxes to resurrect Supes (Henry Cavill), as they are overmatched by Steppenwolf and his horde. So, what works? In contrast to Marvel’s films, which are more concerned with attaining a certain level of realism, JUSTICE LEAGUE embraces a more fantastic tone befitting its comic book roots. It’s no wonder that composer Danny Elfman samples his own BATMAN score from ’89, as that series of films also utilized a more stylized approach. I hope this method is emphasized in any future DC films, as it goes a long way toward differentiating itself from Marvel’s efforts. The cast is also mostly strong, when given something to do. Cavill is proving a capable successor to Christopher Reeve, which is no small feat. Gadot breathes humanistic life into Diana Prince. Miller brings comedic relief, Momoa is suitably imposing and cocky, and Fisher mines some pathos. I continue to be impressed by Affleck’s embodiment of a Frank Miller-inspired Bats, too. Neither BvS nor JUSTICE LEAGUE are anywhere near as good as Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy or Tim Burton’s first BATMAN, but Affleck may be my favorite Bruce Wayne. Finally, the Easter eggs that are laced throughout the film are very exciting to this comic fan. References to Green Lantern, possibly Captain Marvel or Shazam, and Jack Kirby’s wondrous New Gods all made me smile. Additionally, the seeds for exploring Atlantean politics and Barry Allen’s tragic family history are sown. The bit about the New Gods brings me to the first misstep, however. Darkseid’s existence should have been played up to a much greater degree. I doubt most viewers would have any idea that Steppnwolf is a minion of Darkseid. This brings me to my second critique. Steppenwolf was a lousy choice for a villain for the first entry in tent pole team up franchise. Someone like Braniac, who we have never seen on screen, who has name recognition, and is suitably powerful would’ve been a much better choice. If you wanted a more deep-cut villain, how about Despero, Kanjar Ro, or Mongul? If the idea was to foreshadow Darkseid’s involvement, Kalibak could’ve been used. The realization of Steppenwolf on screen is poorly done as well. Visually, he’s just boring. This leads me to another issue, which is the overuse of CGI. Large swaths of the film look like a cartoon, and not in a good way. I couldn’t help but be reminded of STAR WARS EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE, my benchmark for overreliance on CGI. This wouldn’t be as much of an issue if the tone of the film was consistent. Unfortunately, it’s not. See, Zack Snyder was unable to complete the film. Depending on whom you believe, he either stepped away because of the death of his daughter or he was fired. In any case, Joss Whedon was brought on to finish the work. While I feel both are capable and even interesting directors, their styles go together like peanut butter and pickles. Furthermore, as with BvS, you can practically feel the corporate suits dictating what needs to happen in the story rather than letting it unfold organically. Say what you will about MAN OF STEEL, but it and WONDER WOMAN are the only entries in DC’s universe that feel like products of their artists’ visions. There’s no doubt that JUSTICE LEAGUE is disappointing. In my opinion, though, it is still worth a watch. This goes especially for fans who are invested in seeing the DC cinematic universe unfold. Warner Brothers needs to back off and let their creative talents do their jobs, though. Make sure you sit through the credits as there’s a few surprises therein. I watched the 4K UHD and found the presentation to be extremely sharp and pleasing. JUSTICE LEAGUE comes recommended, with some caveats.
