Good value, tons of features
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.JVC’s next generation of Marshmallow+ ear buds offer an improved design over the previous generation at an affordable price. They also have a low latency mode to help response time with gaming, which is often an issue with Bluetooth headphones. With a very competitive price and a pretty extensive features list, they look like a good value, but how do they compare? Time to find out. In the package are the ear buds, a charging cable (USB-C, yay!), some ear tips (smaller memory foam, and 3 sizes of silicone ear tips for those who do not prefer the memory foam option), and the manual. The manual is pretty sparse, just running through the basics of how to manage the headphones and navigate the touch controls. I found the memory foam tips that came installed to be a good fit. They go into the ear easily and are very comfortable, providing a good seal. As with most in-ear type headphones, you can hear yourself talk like you plugged your ears, however I did not experience any kind of pressure or discomfort, which was very welcome. I frequently have problems with this for in-ear buds, but I had no sensation of “cabin pressure” either with them just in my ears or with noise cancellation active. One note here – the earbuds have small plastic guards on them for travel that need to be peeled off so they can charge from the case. If you are like me and just open up things and plug them in to charge, be sure to take those off before you get going. Pairing the earbuds initially is pretty straightforward. Pull them out of the charging case and they power up. If they can’t find a device that they have paired with previously, they will automatically enter pairing mode. It’s not quite as seamless as AirPods if you have an Apple device, but nothing on the market really is. If they pair to a device you had them paired to previously, but you want to pair them to yet another device, it isn’t immediately obvious how to do that. You need to manually disconnect it from the thing it was paired to and wait for them to enter paring mode again, which is not always easy to do and kind of annoying. The touch controls work fine, however getting them out of the case and into your ears without accidentally tapping them, especially with the memory foam tips that need a little push to seat in your ear, is challenging. I found that I am very good at inadvertently tapping them while going into my ear, with the single tap on the right entering into “ambient” mode, which lowers the volume considerably. Once in and paired, time to listen! For the price, these buds sound good. Bass, in particular, with the sealed design, is very good. Highs and mids are not as detailed or as textured as my AirPods Pro, but these cost about 25% as much as those. For most users, these will be fine. Sound isolation is also good, with active noise cancellation and the memory foam tips pushing out unwanted sounds. The mics work fine for taking an occasional phone call, and battery life is in the typical around 6 hour mark for ear buds. Considering their price, they sound good and have a lot of features. One thing that is advertised on the box is “low latency” mode for video and gaming. These little buds support AptX Low Latency, and it does work, but there are some things you should know before you buy them thinking they will just work for gaming. First of all, low latency mode is dependent entirely on the device you are pairing with. Nintendo Switch and Apple devices for example, do not support low latency mode, and you will notice lag in gaming. This is true of many other devices as well, they must also support AptX LL mode. This may require you to buy a dedicated Bluetooth transmitter that supports AptX LL and plug it into the headphone jack or USB port of your device. The final annoyance here is that you must put the headphones into low latency mode by tapping on the right earbud 4 times. THIS IS NOT MENTIONED IN THE MANUAL. It’s pretty unforgiveable that the manual does not mention how to get the headphones into LL mode when it is advertised on the box. I stumbled on it when I found the online version of the manual. Fortunately, once in LL mode, they will stay that way through multiple power ups. Using a Bluetooth 5.3 transmitter, I was able to test LL mode on a switch, and it was great. But it is a chore to get there and very dependent on your device if it will work. Overall, for their price, this is a solid set of Bluetooth earbuds. Supporting the latest Bluetooth 5.3 standard is fantastic, and the features list is as extensive as sets costing much more. Low Latency mode, if you have a compatible transmitter and know how to get them into LL mode, is great for gaming. The sound quality in the mids and highs is not as great as higher end ear buds, and the incomplete manual is unfortunate and keep this from being perfect, but it these are a solid option to consider if you want good sound on a budget.

Comfort at the touch of a finger
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First off, I love the small size of the case, my others have been bigger. It just fits on my bedside table much easier. The earbuds are also smaller than any I've owned and fit in my ear much better without it being obvious I have them (it) in. It comes with extra ear tips so you can select a size that fits the best. Word of caution. Mine came in a plain white envelope which had gotten squished in the packaging so I didn't see them. It wasn't until I came across instructions on how to replace the ear tips that I realized there were more and went exploring and found them stuck up in a corner of the packaging. I found my best size and it fits so well. I don't feel as if I have them jammed in my ear nor do I feel they are about to fall out. They are very comfortable which, for me, is a huge plus. Now, to what you really want to know. They paired with my landline, my mobile and my laptop with no issues. The laptop surprised me as it tends to be finicky but not this time. They are touch sensitive and responded well to each touch whether turning them on, off or lowering the volume to be able to hear what is going on around you. Apparently you can also boost the bass but I didn't try that. The noise canceling function works well for me, I didn't even hear the herd of elephants called my four grandchildren enter the house. These are low latency and, while I cannot speak to gaming as I'm the low end of that, I did stream a couple of videos on my phone and did notice there was less lag time then usual with the audio as compared to my past earbuds. While I cannot speak much to battery life, I simply don't use them for hours at a time, I have not had issues with only charging them overnight and they hold up all day for me. I probably use them about 6 to 7 hours a day, only 4 hours in a continuous stretch then intermittent through the rest of the day. I am very happy with them and passed my old pair of earbuds down to my granddaughter.

Solid set of ear buds
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. These are a nice little set of earbuds. Like most earbuds these days, they come in a little carrying case that has a battery in it so it can recharge the batteries just by putting them in the case. That means you can listen longer before having to plug them into the wall. If you are a fan of simplicity, these earbuds are for you. Theres no companion app to have to mess around with on your phone (at least not that I could find) and all of the controls are done by a series of taps on the left or right earbud. 2 taps to turn the volume down, three taps to turn it up. Long press to cycle through the different EQ sound modes. On the other earbud you can press to play or pause as well as switch on and off the noise canceling. While I’m on that topic, I don’t know if I would actually call these noise canceling. If you are thinking of a nice set of over the ear active noise canceling headphones, these will surely disappoint you. If you put these in noise canceling mode you can still easily hear yourself clap or hear a TV on if its loud in the room. Noise dampening would maybe be a better term and that seems to mainly be achieved by the moldable foam tips that you put in your ear. You scrunch them up and insert the earbud in your ear and then the foam expands to seal off your ear canal. As far as sound quality goes. They are good, pretty much what you would expect from a set of ear buds in this price range. Not spectacular, but not horrible either. I would sat the sound gas good range and its not overly heavy on any frequency. They are nice and balanced. They are also comfortable to wear. I had them in for a few hours while I went on a bike ride and didn’t feel any ear pain or anything like that. They also stayed in my ear pretty good too. I don’t know if I would trust them for running or other vigorous activity. But walking or biking would be fine. Overall, they are a good budget ear bud. Definitely give them a listen if you are in the market for some new buds!

Great Sound, Noise Cancelling, Comfort!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. These JVC Marshmallow Plus Low Latency ANC headphone sound very good, a good value at the price point they're at. These are comfortable, they really feel like pillows in the ear. I didn't notice the comfort as I inserted them, but once I started listening, I really noticed the feeling of comfort in my ears unlike any other earbud I have ever tried. I didn't want to take them out, and they didn't feel like they were going to fall out. As far as these earbuds being low latency, they're very good but they are not zero delay. For example, when I stream videos, I did notice a slight lip sync mis-match which might be occurring due to a little delay (which I think is common with Bluetooth). Noise cancelling works well, I didn't hear the tv in the room I was in nor someone talking to me while I had it turned on and sound was playing. However, the pass-thru sound mode, when you tap once on the right earbud, results in volume lowering and sound/voices from around you are passing thru so you can have a conversation if needed without popping out the earbuds. Unfortunately, there was some moderate frustration when I opened the package to set these JVC Marshmallow Plus earbuds up for first time use. The issue was that the charging connectors on the earbuds were covered, and when I removed one of them the memory foam eartip cover came right off. I had a lot of trouble getting them back on and was trying to be extra careful because there was a warning on a paper insert about being careful not to tear them (but the instructions were not "clear" as to how not to do that). With some amount of effort I got it, though, with sound playing (which helped me know when it was right, because until the speaker was lined up right with the hole in the memory foam for sound escape, it just didn’t sound right before it was right).

Active Noise Cancellation on a Budget
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Earbuds are a dime a dozen nowadays and everyone always discuss the Airpods Pros, Sony 1000XM4, and Bose QC yet those are all multi-hundred dollar earbuds to which JVC has now thrown their hat into the ring at a much lower price point in an attempt to compete with these favorites to which I can say they have done a phenomenal job! The features of these buds are definitely comparable to those models that are three and four times the cost. Starting with the unboxing I was extremely impressed with the build quality of these headphones as they are definitely comparable to that matte feel of the Pixel Buds and they are also very inconspicuous as other wireless earbuds in the sub $100 category are traditionally large and bulky. The fit and feel of the earbuds was actually right on par with the Airpods in my opinion as I prefer the small q-tip like look as with flush mount earbuds it is difficult at times to remove them. I will say the case was a tad larger than that of the Airpods or Pixel Buds, but not by much and especially much better than some of the monstrosities out there that can`t even fit in your pants pocket. I also really liked that the charging utilized on the case was USB-C. After being impressed with the build quality I expected the actual performance of these earbuds to be where the cost cutting took place to get them at that $60 price point, but I was shocked with how well they performed. They obviously are not going to perform exactly like $250 earbuds, but my goodness they come pretty close for being a fourth the cost. It is tough to describe sound in words, but from a layman's perspective few would notice the subtle differences. All of the little features with these earbuds is what really set them apart though in that they have nearly all of those of much higher rated headphones from the touch controls to the active noise cancelling. Just the fact that JVC was able to get fairly effective noise cancellation in a pair of earbuds at this price point is astonishing. Another feature I have to mention is the touch & talk feature that allows you to touch the earbuds and automatically lower the volume of the music so that you can more easily hear someone you are talking to. Also the ability to only use one bud at a time was beneficial as there are times where I only want to use one bud and with other earbuds it requires it to be either the left or right depending on the Bluetooth connectivity. JVC has really packed these earbuds with everything imaginable you would ask for as far as functionality. Overall, I am just amazed at these earbuds from JVC as everything from the build quality, look, and feel to the performance is top notch. JVC has definitely stepped up their game with these earbuds as traditionally I have just written JVC off as the cheap headphone company with subpar products, but these earbuds definitely punch outside of their weight class. I can`t recommend these earbuds enough for those not wanting to spend a couple hundred dollars for earbuds.
