The chemicals built up inside, apparently. When I started using a new filter, I couldn't believe the difference in taste & quality of the coffee. Now I try to switch to a new filter every 3 months or so.

Extra protection

That extra protection is great. The added taste benefit is not really there after our other water equipment in the house takes care of everything.
