We had an old floor standing mixer (Hobart D300) to make dough, sauce and to shred cheese. It was so much quieter than this little thing. It sounded like the gears weren't properly greased. As an industrial maintenance technician, I decided to tear into it. There was plenty of grease in the gearbox. However, there were a couple of places where there were rotating parts without grease. I took some of the excess grease and put it on the bare metal and put it back together. It's so much quieter now and all I hear is the whine of the motor (sounds like a cheap remote controlled car). I wish I would have taken a picture of the problem areas to assist KitchenAid in rectifying the problem.
