This amazing film with stunning cinematography and top-notch direction from Best Director Oscar winner Damien Chazelle is worth every penny, especially in this awesome steelbook.

    A modern musical classic

An old-fashioned, light musical in the beginning but turns darker in the second half. Very original and moving. Great lead performances by Stone and Gosling.

A nice story and great music. Love to see jazz be relevant in a mainstream picture. Great production design will hopefully have you enthralled like i was.

    Been There, Done That

LA LA LAND is a disappointment to us oldsters who have seen the old Hollywood musicals of about 1935 to 1965 whether "live," in revival or in the home theater. Two popular actors who are non-singers and non-dancers were cast as the leads in this musical, with weak results not usually seen from Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. Much of the film seems like a watered-down version of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN (1952), about a rookie who wants to make it in the movies, with dashes of WEST SIDE STORY's (1961) choreography and an ending straight out of the bittersweet UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG (Les Parapluies de Cherbourg; 1964). There was very little truly new in this movie, and what there was, was unconvincing. I know that people who saw this film with enthusiasm and pleasure (after all, it DID almost win an Oscar) may be tired of hearing us oldsters carp about the good old days; the proof is to stream or buy such movies as I've listed above, also AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, GIGI, and even THE ARTIST, to name only a few. Perhaps the first two THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT anthologies are the best way to start. Technique: Very good Blu-Ray sound and minimal lateral distortion, good motion and color transition from indoor to outdoor shooting helped immeasurably by modern C.G.I. and green-screen techniques. On the whole LA LA LAND is cutting edge, but the story, acting and songs do not go straight to the heart.

    Excellent movie, Aspect ratio sucks

Hate the 2.55:1 aspect ratio. I wish they would've had a 1.78:1 format as the black bars on top and bottom are too much

    LaLa Land DVD

Singing was mediocre and dancing was not professionally in sync. There was a glitch in the music about 20 min. into film, followed by poor lighting/photography in a piano scene. The story was so lame we could not stand more than 40 min. We normally love musicals, but this was not up to our standards. Even teenage grandchildren didn't like it.

    Very Overrated in my Opinion

Below average singing & dancing. Not every song was yawn inducing, but most were. I'm by no means a big fan of musicals, but I do like them when they are done right. This one wasn't. The acting was fine & the story was "standard" Hollywood romance/comedy/drama.
