literally first time using it, i moved important video files from FCPX to this Lacie Rugged hard drive and began editing. 5 mins in received a message saying "The Disk Was Not Ejected Properly" but i did not touch the device at all. After inspecting the thunderbolt wire, i realized it is a cheaply constructed cable and does not fit properly into the port. It moves freely with plenty of wiggle room and wiggles itself out. I lost ALL my DATA and data recover is not covered by warranty and the company Lacie CHARGES A FEE TO RECOVER YOUR DATA IF THEY CAN RECOVER IT AT ALL. SAVE YOUR MONEY!!! DO NOT BUY LACIE PRODUCTS.

    Fast, durable and portable

If you are a photographer, video editor or graphic designer and really need a portable Thunderbolt drive this is by far one of the best I've seen. If however, like most people, you're the average user who wants a high speed bus-powered Time Machine drive, this is not what you're looking for. For less than half the price you can get a USB 3.0 drive, which will allow you to do everything this will and do so with no noticeable speed differences. In fact for less money you could buy a Lacie USB 3.0 drive with FOUR TIMES the storage capacity. USB 3.0 (built into all 2012 and newer Macs) provides great transfer speeds and better compatibility with older Macs and Windows machines and the average user won't notice the speed difference, especially since TimeMachine maxes out before you ever get close to Thunderbolt speeds. If you're the average Mac user I recommend that you get a Seagate drive, because you can always add a Thunderbolt adapter later on. That being said, if, like me, you're a business user and you need to carry a high speed drive with you and do a lot of dragging and dropping or file exporting, I can't say enough how great this drive is. Using the included Thunderbolt cable I am able to transfer 50 gb worth of HD video in under two minutes, a feat that I previously thought could only be done over ethernet. Not only is the Thunderbolt speed amazing, but the drive is surprisingly portable, while still extremely durable. Also both Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 cables are included, saving you from having to spend $50 on the former cable. Additionally the included Lacie software makes it easy for anyone (even the technologically impaired) to partition the drive (if so desired) allowing for a diverse array of uses and allowing your drive to interface with different operating systems. BOTTOM LINE: If you're a professional who work with a lot of multimedia files in the field and need either a back-up or external hard drive, this is the perfect drive for you. If however you are a consumer looking to back-up documents and pictures, this probably isn't the right drive for you.

The Best as You can switch any HDD you want

This is the only available tunderbolt capable external hard drive. The construction is very good. The best thing about this hard drive is you can change the HDD inside easily by removing 4 Phillips screws. I put the SSD drive inside and use as the booting HDD for my mac air. The result is super fast like the SSD inside the mac air. The HDD inside this product is regular 1TB 2.5 in 5400 rpm.

Just replaced an 8 year old PC Laptop with a new MAC BOOK PRO for the Mobile DJ Business. Got the laptop up and going, plugged in the previous external drive to load music and WOW extremely SLOW! Several minutes to load the data base and in between songs. Wasn't sure if it was the new laptop or the Software i was using. Updated my external with the LaCie 1TB and all i can say is WOW. The drive i was using was only a 500 GB less than a year old. Big difference in the Thunderbolt Technology rather than the old USB 2.0 - 3.0 connections. I would definitely recommend this new style of external Hard Drive.

Lacie makes some very reliable hard drive designs, however they are very overpriced. That being said, we use these from time to time, because of how reliable they are for a laptop drive inside.

I bought this last year to use for MacBook Pro, worked fine with partitioned drive, but then after my Yosemite update on MacBook, it kept ejecting without backing up. I called their customer service and we got it running. (issue was on Macs end, but they helped me! Great customer service gets LaCie 5 stars. Keeping it dedicated to TimeMachine backups.

This is an amazingly fast 1TB external hard disk. The Thunderbolt connection enables blazing read/write speeds from my Macbook Pro and 1TB is enough space for a lot of data. Definitely a recommended peripheral for those w/ MBPs that need to carry more data with them.

Super fast Hard Drive that's also tough and pretty

There are only a few Thunderbolt hard drives available, and even fewer that are portable.. this is one of the best. Even though the Thunderbolt connectivity is no faster than USB 3.0, due to the hard drive itself being the bottleneck, it's still nice to have if you use a Mac because of some features it supports such as Target Disk Mode. The rubber on the hard drive is also very nice and feels expensive, not cheap. It's a certain look, and you either like it or you don't. Needless to say, I love it! I only wish that it was a 1.5 or 2 TB drive for this price.

Nice little hard drive. Pretty quick, even on the USB. Like I said, it could be a little cheaper. You're pretty much paying for a rubber casing specially made for the hard drive.

This is rugged enough for travel, but unless you are planning to take it on road trips, it is more expensive and bulkier than competing brands. Who knows how long any of these will last? This one has a good reputation but it will take years to test it.
