You can skip versions; when you upgrade. It also appears to know what programs are compatible with the new operating system; if it is not, it will not be transferred or installed if up upgrade on the same machine.

Customer service 2 times, that told me it is the internal settings. Wasn't that what this product was suppose to resolve and transfer files. don't waste your money. 0 stars. Best Buy return policy makes me eat the product. Don't shop at Best Buy. Amazon best return policy.

The cable that came with it also is useless with the new laptops. I probably should have had the geek squad do it for all the added aggravation.
