I started buying him the $5 series packs and at 5y/o he builds them without any problems so we decided to up his game experience. Now he's building the big sets for 8+ y/o's.

Definitely a “starter set”

It’s not something that will occupy him for hours, especially without many more of the sets, but it still fun. He will play with Mario around the house by itself, so that’s helpful. You’re definitely going to want to buy many more of the sets to create something better for play time.
