The fridge itself works fine, no issues on the general refrigeration or freezing functions. The craft ice maker has manufacturing flaws that LG hasn’t fixed in all the time it’s been on the market. Ours broke right after a year of ownership, for no apparent reason. It started making a loud grinding noise that we couldn’t stop, and then it died after a couple days. This is a very common issue for the ice maker. Additionally, it just doesn’t make enough ice on a daily basis (family of five, three kids taking water bottles with ice to school daily). Especially after the craft ice maker broke. We had to start buying and making our own ice again, until we found out that LG is currently sending craft ice maker replacements because of the massive amount of complaints. The dispenser also has issues when we try to use the crushed ice feature. I still have not identified what the cause is, but sometimes the whole chute will completely block up with ice after someone has attempted to get crushed ice. Best Buy sent a repair technician while we were still under warranty and he said there was nothing wrong with the parts or mechanics, we just need to “clean it out”. But there’s nothing to clean out before the crushed ice is dispensed, and it still blocks up all the way to the ice bin, as if the chute door just isn’t opening (he assured us it was also working correctly). So we basically don’t use the crushed ice feature. We thought the door knock feature was neat for about a week, but we never use it either. Between components breaking and features we paid for that we either can’t or don’t use, I wish we had gone with the other model I wanted.

The Ice Maker Stopped Making ice after 3 Months

As LG icemakers are know for, the regular ice maker stopped making ice after 3 months, yet the Craft Ice portion still produces ice.

Regarding the "black parts" that do not open as expected, you may be referring to the Mullion (or French Door Seal), which is the vertical bar on the left refrigerator door. On side-by-side models, this part is fixed, unlike some French Door models where it is hinged to seal the gap between the two refrigerator compartments. This design is standard for a side-by-side refrigerator.

The Craft Ice Cube maker started making water instead of ice, but that got replaced for free under warrantee. The water/ice depensor still works. The InstaView feature still works. Lovin' it!
