Overall I’m happy with this sound bar. I was looking for Dolby Atmos and something that would integrate well with my LG OLED tv. This being LG paired with LG, integrating and controlling is not an issue. I like that I can tweak some of the setting via an app, instead of having to go into some HDMI display for the bar. This leaves the remote straight forward and simple. For my household, I need the simplest of setups as possible. If it’s not simple, I’ll hear about it from my wife. It’s great that you can add rear channel speakers to bring the system closer to completeness. This is something I’ll probably do on the near future. The connectivity options are plentiful for my needs, from bluetooth, HDMI, and Google Assistant. My two complaints are minor enough. The bar is wide! I have a 65” screen and this thing is as wide as the TV. That width seems a bit excessive when you compare to other bars. Also, at 500W, I wish there was a little more oomph to be thrown at the low frequencies. I don’t want to be drowing in bass, but a little more kick would be nice. One more thing, if you don’t pick this up in the store yourself, you might get a call from an LTL. I did. I’m assuming this is because the dimensions of the box are too long for common carrier.

    Gets the job done

I've been eagerly awaiting this sound bar since it was announced, and can say I am very happy with the purchase. While it is certainly on the pricier side, it really is a high quality Atmos sound bar. Sound is very crisp and clear and the other modes - like Movie, Music - add an extra layer of depth. With Atmos content it sounds incredible. Can certainly fill a large room with immersive sound. Works well overall with LG B7A although there some occasional AV sync issues, mostly with my xbox, but these have never lasted longer than a few minutes. Agree with getting LG's phone app to allow you to use all the features. Rear sounds speakers are also a good idea.

    Premium Soundbar Experience

I’ve owned a fairly basic 2.1 sound bar for a few years. While certainly an improvement over my television’s built in sound, this setup proved inadequate for a good home theater experience. As a result I was excited to get the LG SK10Y 550 watt 5.1.2 channel sound bar with wireless subwoofer and Dolby Atmos support. Upon arrival most notable initially is the size of the box. If you’re picking this up at the store you’ll need a larger vehicle since the box measures 59.7" x 18.6" x 11.2". It weighs in at 42.6 lbs. Unboxing was easy and revealed the soundbar, subwoofer, remote control, batteries, wall mount hardware, optical cable, and some manuals. The soundbar is big at 57.7" x 2.4" x 5.8" and weighs 16.5 lbs. Due to its somewhat unwieldy length you may want a second set of hands for assistance in putting in place for setup. I opted to not wall mount the SK10Y since I have a shelf under my 65” tv. The combination looks sweet since it’s exactly the same length of my tv. Impressive looking. I place the wireless subwoofer in a corner of my living room. Bass is omnidirectional so subwoofer placement is flexible but I select corner placement since it helps amplify bass. With the SK10Y in place I moved on to setup. I connect via hdmi but one can also select to use the included optical cable. On the rear of the soundbar you will find a bunch of ports including hdmi, optical, ethernet, usb, and a 3.5mm mini jack. Hdmi 4K pass through is supported. I connected to my tv and plugged in both the soundbar and subwoofer. They connected immediately and a rich full sound filled my living room. With 7 incorporated speakers I’d expect nothing less. What an astonishing improvement over my previous setup. The remote controls a bunch of settings from volume to input source. You can also set the sound effect including standard, movie, music, ASC, and bass blast. The SK10Y is a wifi speaker so I continued setup by downloading the LG Wifi Speaker app. The app takes you very simply step by step through adding the SK10Y to your wireless network. Anyone could do it. Once connected you can now use the app as a remote control to change volume, sound effect settings, etc. Sweet! This LG also supports Chromecast for Android users. Also supported is Google Home control. I simply connected by using the Google Home app and selected add device. You can now control the SK10Y via voice control. What a great added feature. For those of you with Alexa you can’t control the soundbar by voice but you can connect your Echo or Echo Dot via bluetooth and then stream your music through the soundbar. It sounds amazing. All these features are incredible but I now wanted to see how the LG SK10Y performed for home theater. The SK10Y is a premium soundbar with Dolby Atmos support so it incorporates two up firing speakers intended to envelope the listener in sound. I grab a 4K Blu-ray of Oblivion and pop it in. The soundbar quickly displays that it is now in Dolby Atmos mode. As the movie progressed I was just blown away that a soundbar can sound so good. Soundstage was rich and atmospheric with deep bass and plenty of volume. There is a scene in the film which takes place in a wilderness setting. Here Dolby Atmos was particularly captivating. I had seen this film several times and popped it in just to test the LG but it was suddenly a new and improved experience. I found myself watching whole thing. For the last few days I put it though it’s paces while watching tv, streaming music, controlling it via voice through Google Home, and for movie viewing as the new center of my home theater system. The LG is a full featured and high quality soundbar and did not disappoint. Keep in mind that there is also an optional set of wireless rear channel surround speakers SPK8-S. I wish they had been included but once added you’ll be blown away. Highly recommended.

    Powerful soundbar with terrific tech

I got the LG - 5.1.2-Channel Hi-Res Audio Sound Bar with Wireless Subwoofer and Dolby Atmos Technology to go with our 60” 4K TV to have a modest media room. The LG soundbar has more tech built into it than you can imagine. I won’t repeat the list of items it contains since a full list is on the product page, and it is lengthy. The soundbar is 57” long with front, side and top speakers with a number of settings for various types of listening related to movies, voice, games and so on. Aside from its remote to control bass, treble, subwoofer (wireless), surround and top speakers where the Atmos effects come in, you can also install an app on your smartphone for more granular control. You can also cast sound from mobile devices to it and use Google Assistant through a separate device (room speaker with Google Assistant, your phone with Google Assistant etc.) for voice commands to the soundbar. You can buy wireless rear speakers that are designed for this system, if you want actual surround sound in your media room. Basic setup was simple. I plugged in the soundbar and subwoofer and connected the soundbar to the TV with an included optic cable (there are various jacks & ports for alternate connections, but you must supply those cables), then turned everything on. The soundbar paired with the subwoofer easily. I went into the TV settings and turned off the TV speakers. It just worked from there. Lots of volume, and after playing with the soundbar settings for a while, I was able to get the sound I preferred. Again, this is a powerful system (500 watts+) with a lot built into the system to provide plenty of variety for your sound experience. The one real drawback I noted was that when the soundscape would get dramatic (sound effects/swelling music), it would cover the voice/dialogue enough making it difficult to hear what was being said with any real clarity. It appears that there’s no separate control for adjusting the center/main channel volume (where the voice is pushed) apart from the surround/Atmos sound coming out of the other sound channels (mostly the side & top speakers). This is a serious drawback to an otherwise high tech and impressive soundbar system. This is even more of an issue for those with some hearing loss because one of the primary issues involved in aging and hearing loss is difficulty pulling clear conversation out of ambient sound whether music, sound effects or just noise. The inability to control voice volume independently from music and sound effects is a real problem. Perhaps LG will be able to change this through a firmware upgrade – I don’t know. As it is, with all the neat stuff built into this very nice soundbar system, it’s impressive in nearly every way but seriously lacking on the voice end to make this the real sound system it was meant to be. As it is, it’s a good system for young ears, perhaps, but I suspect even for young ears the voice/dialogue is still being covered up to some degree by the music/sound effects. For the price, voice/dialog should have separate controls so that clearly hearing the voice/dialog is always possible no matter all the other music/sound effects.

This sound bar is terrible out of the box but once you tweak it to the right settings it's very good. I don't understand why they don't just make it good without all this tweaking! When you initially set up the bar, dialogue is awful and there isn't much you can do to fix this without downloading the LG Speaker App to fix this. Surprisingly this App is the only way to control a bunch of important features that aren't available through the remote for some reason. Installing an update and turning the "DRC" mode to ON corrected the crappy out of box sound and now the sound bar is actually very good. I don't think this or any sound bar is worth $1,000 but i got it for 70% off open box. At that price point, totally worth it!

One Major Flaw Brings It Down

The LG SK10Y soundbar gives a great first impression. It is large, attractive and appears to be very high quality. Setup is very quick and easy despite the minimal instructions that come in the box. I would immediately download the app and the full set of instructions that can be downloaded from the LG website. Pairing with the sub was also easy In the box you get an optical cable, mounting hardware, a remote and batteries. The remote is small with a simple layout that is responsive and easy to operate intuitively. I connected my cable box and an Amazon fire stick thru HDMi and a Bluray thru the optical input. All connections functioned perfectly. I also have Google Home speakers and Android phones which can cast music to the sounbar. This function worked well and the sound was excellent. The remote allows you to control the subwoofer, bass, treble, overhead volume control for the up firing speakers and rear speakers, which are not included. There are various soundfields available including, ASC (adaptive sound control) which instantly analyzes the sound and optimizes the output, Bass Blast (reinforces the bass), Standard (tuned by Meridian), Music, and Movie (which gives a more immersive sound). And this is where the biggest problem lies. When watching in movie mode the dialogue gets completely washed out and hollow sounding. And there is no ability to adjust the individual speaker volumes. A center channel speaker control is absolutely necessary. If you cant hear the dialogue then all of the sound effects in the world are useless. So I am forced to watch movies in either Bass Blast or Standard. In both cases the dialogue comes through clear and the overall experience is good but not quite as immersive as the movie mode was intended to be. The only other issue that I have had has been the mobile app losing its connection to the soundbar and then being unable to locate the soundbar in order to reconnect. This happens quite frequently. This soundbar is well built and has the potential to be excellent. If LG can somehow correct the dialogue issue in Movie mode and or enable some type of volume control for the indvidual speakers, especially the center channel, then I would definitely recommend this soundbar. However, until that issue is resolved, I cannot recommend this.

Thanks so much for the excellent review and we are sorry this soundbar was not as expected when it came to the dialogue coming through. We have great news! We just released an update for the SK10Y that allows you to adjust the center channel volume level. To perform the software update you will need the LG Wi-Fi Speaker Application. Once in the app you will click on settings, the Software Version Information and then you will need to select Update. Please ensure the sound bar is not powered off while the update is in progress. The sound bar will automatically reboot when the update has completed. The first thing to know about this soundbar is the size of the box it comes in, it is HUGE! You will need a large car, SUV or truck to get this home. Unpacking and setup was a snap. The wireless sub connected immediately. There is an included optical cable to connect it to your setup but no HDMI cables. There are two templates for the mounting hardware and a one-page setup/user guide which was difficult to read. You can download it along with a full user manual from the LG site and I would advise doing so. I had a bit of difficulty connecting to Wi-Fi on 5G but it connected fine to regular signal. The LG Speaker app was nice to have but seems at this price point, should do more. There are sound presets for Movie, Music, Standard, ASC and Bass Blast that offer different sound configurations based on what you’re listening to. I thought the bar did an excellent job at creating an immersive sound experience. I could differentiate musical instruments and their locations among the orchestra as well as hearing planes fly overhead from left to right and front to back. I will still get the rear speakers though to round out the set. The volume is more than enough for an average home and would bother my neighbors at higher levels. The remote control is basic with power, volume, play controls and a few sound controls. It is responsive and the bar reacts quickly. This sound bar contains technology I will probably never understand and I’ve read several reviews of people arguing over the finer points of Dolby Atmos and high definition sound, but the important part of it for me is that it makes my movies and music sound better than any thing else I’ve had in the past. The price and technology make this more suited for audiophiles rather than the average consumer, however, I would recommend this to a friend if they had the means.

    Great sound for larger room

First of all I have to declare that I received the LG soundbar SK10Y as part of the Best Buy tech insider network program in exchange for my honest opinion. First off, this soundbar is replacing a Polk Magnifi Mini that I have used over the past year and have really enjoyed, except for an issue where it wouldn't pick up the sound from the HDMI input and forced me to turn off the Tv and restart. In comparison, the LG soundbar is much - much larger. The LG is around 57 inches long, and about 5 inches deep, but is still very slim. I am using it on my mantle under a 65 inch Sony television and I think the soundbar looks perfect with this television. Set up was pretty easy. I had some type of issue getting the app to locate the soundbar so I could complete the setup process with my wifi but it seemed to work itself out. The instructions certainly aren't much help. After setup, everything seems to be perfect. The LG SK10Y recognizes the HDMI input from the television everytime, it switches to bluetooth when you want to listen from your phone, it has google cast built in and this also has worked every time I have tried it. Most importantly, however, is that the soundbar really has great sound. The subwoofer has tight bass and is not overpowering (it can be adjusted seperately), and the voice sync with the television is spot on. I really like this soundbar and in a room like mine, where I don't have a good way to set up a receiver and surround system, this is a great option. My room is 22 by 39, so fairly large with 13 foot ceilings. I haven't found a good source to try out the dolby atmos speakers, but I have to believe they will sound as good as the rest of the system. Did I happen to say that I really like this soundbar? I know its a little pricey, but if you like to watch movies or if you have younger kids, like me, that love to crank up some Pandora in the living room and dance, then I think you will enjoy the big sound that you can get from this system. It works great for me.

    Almost Great Soundbar. Needs DTS-HD

After the firmware update and some adjustment to the settings, the soundbar sounds great. There are other reviews that give a full breakdown, but I wanted to leave this review to note one downside. Most of my Blu-rays have DTS-HD master audio. I knew the soundbar couldn’t do DTS:X, but apparently it can’t do DTS-HD either. I don’t know if this can be added via firmware update, but it needs that before I can recommend to friends. Atmos and Dolby True-HD sounds great and PCM over HDMI helps compensate for the lack of DTS decoding if your player can do that work. But why not support DTS-HD?

Presentation - The LG SK10Y comes in a very large box. Inside, everything is securely held in place and wrapped to ensure cosmetic perfection. The bar itself is huge – measuring in, at a length just under 57 inches – so be prepared to have overhang on the sides if your display is smaller than a 65 inch format. At just around 16 pounds, the sound bar is much lighter than I had expected. Here’s where the tedium begins. The kit comes with a set of “L” brackets to primarily accommodate a wall mounting scenario. Certainly there are many people that wall mount and stand/table position their displays. But if you wall mount using a quality, articulating arm arrangement – be prepared – as this unit offers little in the way of convenience with respect to attaching the bar to the arm or directly to the television that is already on an arm. Prepare to get creative, either by fabricating your own parts or cobbling together various sound bar mounting kits that can work with a bar of this size and its limited connectivity. A daunting task. Lastly, the remote is diminutive but functional. Far smaller than I am accustomed to for piece equipment at this price point. At first I wasn’t very impressed with it and I am still shocked that any AV theater component that will obviously be used in darkened rooms would not include integrated back lighting, but what can you do? This remote does work and feels solidly constructed. It just could be a tad bit bigger. Initial Setup - Setup was simple & straightforward and certainly less problematic than the competition. The LG wireless Speaker app (I use the Android version) was quick to install and just as quick to detect the presence of the bar and the subwoofer. Set up was simple but I have serious complaints about what is inside – or better yet – what is missing inside the mobile control app. More about that later. One notable attribute about the subwoofer – there are a few sound bar systems with accompanying wireless subwoofers that have strange pairing arrangements. The system this LG SK10Y replaces is notorious for a seriously annoying ‘knock knocking’, hand shaking procedure. I am happy to report that this system syncs quickly and quietly every time you wake it up and when the audio stream engages, there’s a nice slow ramping up of the LF (low frequency) channel content. Nice touch LG! Performance - Here’s where the entire experience goes off-the-rails. I have to say straight away that the engineering team at LG – with or without the help of Dolby labs and/or Meridian – really missed the mark on this one. It truly feels like a half-baked product. This system is touted (and priced) as the pinnacle of the product range, with strong emphasis on the Dolby Atmos functionality and yet it is the Dolby processing that really ruins the customer experience. I’ve demo’d quite a bit of Dolby Atmos & Dolby Digital 5.1 content (from both Blu-ray & DVD sources) and nearly all of it sounds horrible no matter the internal settings employed, either by way of the remote control or the mobile app. With Dolby Atmos material, the staging is completely fouled up with the main dialogue/center presence being shoved back or masked, like the drivers that produced that sound field are positioned at the back of the sound bar. Once any type of dramatic presence, be it ambient music or environmental soundscape, kicks into gear, the main dialogue is nearly unperceivable. I’ve tried numerous settings to try and rectify the situation with no success. With Dolby Digital 5.1 sound fields the issue is less prominent but no less aggravating. It is almost as if there is a form of DRC enabled deep in the bowels of the DSP control that is squashing the main dialogue and primary sound content into a ‘back stage ‘or misaligned position. Enabling the Night mode or DRC on normal Dolby programming does nothing to rectify the problem. In comparison to just about any Dolby Atmos enabled AV Receiver presently on the market, where you can customize individual sound levels for ALL of the channels separately, this SK10Y provides only limited and fundamentally awkward sound field adjustment. At the very least, there should be a “center” volume adjustment in both the remote controller menus and the mobile app. This is a glaring omission. Without this critical level control, and no matter how large or small the other issues that are present in this package, the mere fact that you cannot adjust the center & main channel volume levels separate from the surround & presence (Atmos) sound fields relegates this package to pretty much non-functional at the most basic level. Perhaps this issue can be and will be addressed in a future firmware update (and mobile app revision) but it does seems rather odd that this system was released in such a crippled fashion. Another strange situation is the sparse and inconsistent specsmanship with respect to DTS surround decoding capability. The unit obviously will playback DTS 7.1 material and does so brilliantly I might add – certainly compared to the inherent Dolby catastrophe – but the unit never displays anything but LPCM for DTS streams. What? Most if not all current AV Receivers have clearly verbose displays of the sound mode being processed. I truly don’t understand the LG engineers thinking on this. One additional note about the front panel, dot matrix display. It’s easy to read from a distance, automatically dims on its own but there isn’t a provision to be able to completely turn it off. Big oversight in my humble opinion. Interestingly enough, when content encoded with both DTS & Dolby Atmos material (like Game of Thrones, Justice League and others…) is played back with this system - forced to DTS mode by way of the movies menu system - the staging, channel balance and fidelity are pretty amazing. Summary - This sound bar system has many smaller issues that can easily be overlooked or adaptd to, even at this price point. But the fact that it was released before it was thoroughly tested was a huge mistake on the part of LG and the broken Dolby Atmos/Dolby Digital DSP operation is a glaring functional defect in its design – making this an absolutely, “Cannot Recommend” advisement along with the low product score. Spend your money elsewhere or at the very least, wait until such time that product reviews clearly begin to demonstrate that LG Engineering has fixed these Dolby issues before making a purchase. Complaints about this operational defect can already be found on the LG website. Pros: Ease of setup. Clean lines and more complimentary shape compared to prior LG top-end model. Cons: First and foremost – unacceptably poor implementation of the Dolby Digital/Dolby Atmos standards. The DSP is seriously broken in this system. Shockingly well balanced DTS multichannel sound reproduction for a primarily Dolby Atmos marketed product. A win for DTS, a loss for the consumer wanting broad compatibility. Horrible front panel display that lacks detail across all functions and that cannot be turned off. Lots of potential already built into the mobile app but it’s far from being complete. The remote control is pretty basic for a product at the top of the LG line up, with no back lighting and is a bit too small in terms of footprint. Very limited mounting options.

POST FIRMWARE UPDATE - Awesome soundbar, FINALLY!!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I am coming back to update my a previous post. My original unit was not connecting correctly to the LG app and never acknowledged the widely discussed firmware update. I exchanged my unit at Best Buy for one that was more recent, a June 2018 build. Though it still did not have the latest firmware installed, it did allow me to connect properly via the app and download it after a few tries. Still very frustrating to use the app, but it did ultimately work. The soundbar sounds MUCH better now so I don't feel as ripped off for buying. You can still hear some center channel weakness on certain movies, but as a whole I'm VERY satisfied, especially with the separate rear speakers which IMO are a must. Shame on LG for making this update so difficult for users to install. The LG Customer Service isn't even aware of it!!!! Buyers, you need to make sure your software version reads MAIN: 18061178... That is the latest version... If it doesn't say that, you wont be able to adjust Center Channel settings via the remote. Believe me, it's been a painful month to get this so I know your pain!!! Good luck all!! The soundbar hits the ball out of the park once the firmware update is installed.

    Great sound - with flaws

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this in mid 2018 and gave some time for firmware to be released to address issues, so at this point I feel I can give a fair review. First, the sound on the soundbar alone is great. You do essentially have to max out the center speaker volume and then fiddle with the treble and bass to get it sounding right, but it works. Music sounds good, tv sounds good, movies with the simulated surround sound good. Atmos is also handled well. Overall I would give the sound of the bar 4 or 5 stars alone. However when mixing in peripherals, that is where issues come into play. The sub is connected via wifi, not Bluetooth like most others. So many times I have had issues with the sub crackling (the power light on the back flickers when this happens) due to connection issues. The help says make sure there are no routers near it. Well the closest one is a good 2 rooms away. I had to mess around with the location of the sub to get it to minimize the issues. I tried across the room, on the left or right, and on the side of the tv stand. All had issues - I essentially had to make room on the back corner of the tv stand, and it seems to work there. It shouldn't take that much fiddling with location just to get consistent sound. This is one that MAY have been fixed with firmware, but I haven't messed with the sub location in about 7 months now. Though ironically the rear speakers, which connect to the soundbar in the same way, never had any issues at all? Speaking of the rear speakers....TOTAL MESS. This bar is set up as 5.1.2, and adding the rear speakers makes it a 7.1.2. The problem is when the rear speakers are connected, they should be handled as the left and right rear, while the side speakers on the soundbar should handle the left and right side speakers. This isn't the case, they are reversed. So the rear speakers are NEVER used unless you are watching Atmos or 7.1 content. There is a setting to set the surround speakers to always on, which is great. It should be able to use them not only in Atmos and 7.1, but also 5.1 sound. And that is the case...though I think they only copy what is in the left and right side speakers instead of separating the channels for the 5.1 content, so the rear channels are actually coming out of the side speakers on the soundbar and the rear speakers. I don't have much of a problem with it, but others might. However turning surround speakers to always on causes another issue. If you are listening to something with stereo sound, all sound blares out of the rear speakers as well. Nothing like watching a 5.1 movie at volume 20 with surround on, switching to a stereo tv channel, and have the volume shake the whole house. Which means to properly use the surround speakers for 5.1 and not use them for stereo, you constantly have to change the setting on the soundbar. I'd think they would have figured that out by now with firmware, but that isn't the case. I'd recommend this soundbar for it's good sound after messing with center channel, treble, and bass. Assuming you have a place for the sub that won't cause the crackle/disconnect issues. However if you want proper rear channels, DO NOT BUY THIS SYSTEM WITH THE SURROUND SPEAKERS, get something else unless you want to constantly turn surround on and off.

The sound quality on the SK10Y is great for a Soundbar. You just need to update the firmware to fix the center channel issue. But one annoying issue with the Google Assistant is you can’t power on/off the Soundbar using Google Home. I do wish it would have also supported Alexa (with the on/off capabilities).

There were a lot of complaints from earlier adapters and rightfully so. The main complaint was the lack of voice during heavy action and no way to resolve this. That problem has been fixed since the firmware update last week (June 22nd). You now have the ability to control the center channel which improves the performance dramatically. I would recommend this soundbar esp at the new discounted price and its practically robbery when priced on open box.

So I read a few negative reviews on this sound bar. I don't let those impact my decision in buying, but it opens my eyes. The first thing I will call out is the need to download the LG Wi-Fi Speaker app (IOS) on your smartphone. Follow the directions to pair it with your sound bar and run the firmware update. After you do this update, I think you will disagree with all the negative reviews. Also pay attention to how you connect to this sound bar. Make sure you're using HDMI 2.2 quality cables. TVARC will not deliver Dolby Atmos sound. If you connect with ARC, go to your TV and make sure it's decoding bitstream and DTS output or you will only get PCM channel sound. Once you set your TV output sound to bitstream and DTS you'll immediately hear the difference and see DTS on the sound bar when you press info on the remote. Also, enable the auto sound feature in the sound bar to help boost the sound levels across all channels. You can do this on the LG app or using your remote control (read the manual). Now for ATMOS sound, you can get it from devices that support decoding for ATMOS, but you have to connect them to the sound bar HDMI inputs to hear ATMOS playback. You'll see it on the front of the sound bar if you press INFO on the remote and you'll certainly "hear" it. Your tv will still show the picture over the ARC in 4k quality, but you'll get ATMOS sound instead of DTS if you connect your equipment correctly and play ATMOS content. This sound bar with the optional rear speakers, blows me out of my room and I feel like I'm at a theater when I watch quality 4k movies.
