The only reason I’m not giving it 5 stars is that the first TV had to be replaced due to manufacturers defect. Best Buy did a very good job of handling that issue.

LG OLED C9 vs Samsung Q90T

    Posted .

I purchased an LG OLED77C9 for downstairs and a Samsung QLED Q90T for upstairs. I would rank the picture quality about equal; however, one can't beat the picture quality on the Q90T, especially in a bright room. Sometimes, on-line professional reviews focus too much on video and sound quality and not enough on other considerations between brands. My other such observations and opinions are as follows: 1) Technical support is quite good via chat with LG, depending on who you are connected with. For example, one tech didn't know that Alexa is built in and thought a separate device was needed to make it work. Samsung has good technical response via phone, but it seems that most of these people are merely glorified phone attendants, not knowledgeable technical reps. They go strictly by the book and usually have you reset the tv if they can't otherwise figure out a solution. The reset doesn't usually solve the problem. 2) The Q90T has a very neat remote that doesn't require line of sight. This is especially beneficial if your tivo or receiver are located in a separate audio room. The LG Magic Remote doesn't have this capability. The Samsung remote can be configured fairly easy to operate various equipment. Doing this with the LG Magic Remote can be a nightmare and one finally resorts to using two or three remotes instead. 3) Alexa seems to be quite versatile on the Q90T. On the C9, Alexa didn't appear to be working. After finding an LG Tech who knew that it really was built in on the C9, he could only solve the problem through a full reset that created a lot of work for me re-installing apps, log-ins, and device codes. I subsequently discovered that Alexa doesn't work properly if the sound is configured through ARC/Earc to an AVR. I had the sound turned way down on the TV since I was using the AVR to control sound though the surround system. Turns out Alexa won't respond if the sound is configured to the AVR via Earc, but will work if sound is configured to the TV speakers. Switching to sound via Earc/Receiver and leaving the audio turned up on the TV caused Alexa not to respond by voice (just a response via screen text) or usually not at all. The rep said I should talk to Amazon!! Neither Alexa or Google Assistant will change tivo cable channels on my C9, but they will on the Q90T. Again, this may relate to who knows what from Tech Support and how complicated the configurations are. 4) The on-line support via manuals are quite good for the Samsung Q90T. For the LG C9, the on-line main manual is sadly deficient in many respects and can't even be downloaded to pdf. It allows a download, but after unzipping the file, one is directed back to the pretty-much-worthless on-line manual. The manual for the LG Magic Remote is really a joke. You won't learn much of anything reading it. 5) Setups and configurations for the Q90T are very user friendly. That isn't so much the case with the LG in my opinion. All in all, they are both great TVs, but all things considered, I think the Q90T has a distinct edge over the C9, and not just in price.

    Great Display with Exploitive Software

The display is as expected good up front. Previous Lg OLED (this is our 3rd) have had burn-in issues. This display I suspect mitigates that by decreasing brightness over time to compensate. The real problem though is the software. Most features are unusable unless you allow them to know your location and give them access to share everything you watch with anyone they want. It's not a cheap device, and it's shameful to steal users information unnecessarily for who knows what nefarious purpose. This will be our last LGTV. They need to learn to ask foes only what they need and work well within the bounds of information they are given.
