I purchased this drive today for the specific task of playing some DVDs I acquired. These DVDs were brand new and have zero damage. After about 1 hour of play time, the video feed froze and a 'grinding' sound could be heard coming from the unit. Upon investigation, it was found that the drive had made about a half-inch ring of scratches into the disc and made it completely unplayable from then on. I contacted LG support and when I inquired about any sort of compensation since I had both video and photo evidence of the grinding occurring, they promptly disconnected from me without any options for recourse, reimbursement, etc. I plan to return the drive but that still doesn't do anything for the $100 in DVDs it ruined.

She has used it and it seemed to work for her but I don't know that she burns or plays discs on her computer all that often. So it may be a great little external reader/writer or it may be mediocre and I wouldn't know. Not exactly a ringing endorsement but I'm not complaining about it either.
